Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Cover

This month's album is "Friend and Foe" by Menomena! I feel kind of lame admitting this, but I had never heard of Menomena before I got this album. It turns out I love it! Vinyl Me, Please has made me a huge Menomena fan! The musical style is rock / pop, but it's also very modern and non-traditional. The thing that strikes me most about the album is that all the songs sound different yet cohesive. It's beautifully put together.

I also love the album cover! The red parts are actually a wheel behind the black and white cover (where it's cut out), so you can move the wheel and the picture changes. So cool!

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Back Cover

I like the artwork on the back of the cover, too. It's so whimsical! I love the color scheme here. Also it looks like this cover was customized for Vinyl Me, Please subscribers! Score!

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Inside Cover

The album is actually tri-fold, but it was too much to capture without losing all detail. Needless to say, this is a really impressive album cover!

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Side A

This is the first time I've received regular black vinyl from Vinyl Me, Please, and it was difficult to photograph without completely overexposing the label graphic. It's a cute little monster that says "friend." I guess they can't all be colored vinyl!

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Side B

This is the reverse side, with another cute monster eating the first monster. It says "foe." I think it's really adorable!

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Art

Hooray! Finally some artwork from Vinyl Me, Please that I really like! The artist is Craig Thompson. This is actually the cover of one of Menomena's EP's, I believe. It fits the theme and matches the album art really well.

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Cocktail

The cocktail this month is The Old Square, and I really like what the notes section has to say about this music + cocktail pairing. Unfortunately, I just don't like whiskey very much. Believe me, I've tried! I think I will order one for a friend some time and just take a sip.

Vinyl Me, Please Subscription Box Review – April 2015 Poem

The inside back cover of the packaging always has the artwork credit along with a poem or narrative written by Vinyl Me, Please's co-founder Tyler Barstow. This month is probably the best poem I've seen from him so far.

Verdict: I think this might be my favorite package from Vinyl Me, Please yet! I absolutely love the album, and I am thrilled to discover a new artist I really like! Plus, for the first time, I like the artwork they sent! And the written piece is nice! Grand slam! Nicely done, Vinyl Me, Please.

What do you think of Vinyl Me, Please?

I am really enjoying your record subscription reviews. I don’t know how I feel about this one, though – its not at all tailored to your tastes, right? There are others that allow for some preferences, like Full Moon or Vnyl or Prescribed Vinyl. I’d love to see some reviews of those. I’d like to know which ones do the best job at matching what you want. I subscribe to The Vault from Third Man Records. It’s good stuff if you like Jack White.

Thanks Bridget! Ooooo I love Jack White too, I will have to check that one out. You’re right, VMP does send out the same record to everyone every month. I have never heard of the others you mention – I will definitely check those out also!
