Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them. (Birchbox offers an option for subscribers to pick one of their samples each month, or to select a pre-curated box, and this month I decided to go with the mystery hair product that turned out to be PARLOR Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray).
Birchbox also included a coupon to get a free Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Primer Deluxe Mini with any full size Benefit purchase with code BENEFITGIFT (expires 2/26)
(I was hoping I'd get to sample Benefit's new Roller Lash mascara - if you've tried it and recommend it, let me know!)
PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray - 1 oz Value $4.90
This was my sample pick for February - my curiosity got the better of me and I needed to get the mystery brand! I like the scent of this spray, and I tried it on dry hair with pretty good results. (I imagine I'd get better results with damp hair).
The one thing I'm a little puzzled about is that on the bottle this product is described as sulfate, gluten and paraben free, but that doesn't match up with the ingredients listed on the Birchbox site. The second ingredient listed for this spray is Magnesium Sulfate. I know that Magnesium Sulfate is Epsom Salt, so that makes sense for a sea salt spray, but still seems like it shouldn't be labeled as sulfate free? (I'm not an expert on the types of sulfates to avoid for color treated hair - I just try to avoid them all, so please let me know if you know more!)
Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant - 1 oz Value $6.50
Gilchrest & Soames Shower Gel - 1 oz Value $2
I've tried this liquid exfoliant before and I like it - it basically works as a scrub exfoliant without the scrub - you just apply the liquid with a cotton ball.
This shower gel is free of parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA, and propylene glycol. I'm never too excited about a shower gel sample, but this one will definitely be used, and I like the scent.
theBalm cosmetics Read My Lips Lip Gloss in BAM! - 2.5 ml Value $4
Juicy Couture Hollywood Royal Perfume Sample - 1.5 ml Value $1.44
This lip gloss provides a good amount of color and shine without being overly glossy/shiny. It is a little sticky though - my only complaint.
Well, I guess I have one other complaint - getting perfume samples! I'm never a huge fan of getting perfume samples as one of my items in a Birchbox (if they counted as a bonus item that would be fine with me).
Verdict: My February Birchbox has a value of about $19. I'm not too excited about it right now, but I may end up liking it more as I use more of the items. What did you get from Birchbox this month?
