Birchbox Review – February 2015 Info

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them. (Birchbox offers an option for subscribers to pick one of their samples each month, or to select a pre-curated box, and this month I decided to go with the mystery hair product that turned out to be PARLOR Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray).

Birchbox Review – February 2015 Benefit

Birchbox also included a coupon to get a free Benefit Cosmetics The POREfessional Primer Deluxe Mini with any full size Benefit purchase with code BENEFITGIFT (expires 2/26)

(I was hoping I’d get to sample Benefit’s new Roller Lash mascara – if you’ve tried it and recommend it, let me know!)

Birchbox Review – February 2015 Parlor

PARLOR by Jeff Chastain Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray – 1 oz Value $4.90

This was my sample pick for February – my curiosity got the better of me and I needed to get the mystery brand! I like the scent of this spray, and I tried it on dry hair with pretty good results. (I imagine I’d get better results with damp hair).

The one thing I’m a little puzzled about is that on the bottle this product is described as sulfate, gluten and paraben free, but that doesn’t match up with the ingredients listed on the Birchbox site. The second ingredient listed for this spray is Magnesium Sulfate. I know that Magnesium Sulfate is Epsom Salt, so that makes sense for a sea salt spray, but still seems like it shouldn’t be labeled as sulfate free? (I’m not an expert on the types of sulfates to avoid for color treated hair – I just try to avoid them all, so please let me know if you know more!)

Birchbox Review – February 2015 Skin Perfector

Paula’s Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant – 1 oz Value $6.50

Gilchrest & Soames Shower Gel – 1 oz Value $2

I’ve tried this liquid exfoliant before and I like it – it basically works as a scrub exfoliant without the scrub – you just apply the liquid with a cotton ball.

This shower gel is free of parabens, phthalates, petrol-derived ingredients, mineral oil, urea, DEA, TEA, and propylene glycol. I’m never too excited about a shower gel sample, but this one will definitely be used, and I like the scent.

Birchbox Review – February 2015 Lip

theBalm cosmetics Read My Lips Lip Gloss in BAM! – 2.5 ml Value $4

Juicy Couture Hollywood Royal Perfume Sample – 1.5 ml Value $1.44

This lip gloss provides a good amount of color and shine without being overly glossy/shiny. It is a little sticky though – my only complaint.

Well, I guess I have one other complaint – getting perfume samples! I’m never a huge fan of getting perfume samples as one of my items in a Birchbox (if they counted as a bonus item that would be fine with me).

Verdict: My February Birchbox has a value of about $19. I’m not too excited about it right now, but I may end up liking it more as I use more of the items. What did you get from Birchbox this month?

  1. I finally received my box today!! I’m even more disappointed with it in person. I got the Essentiel Elements lotion, I hate the smell of it, I don’t like rose scented stuff. The Parlor sea salt spray, which does nothing for my curly, frizzy hair, and the Supergoop CC Cream I was most excited about, the light to medium shade is too dark for my fair skin, plus the sample is sooooo small. The Beekind conditioner I’m really excited about, but again small sample size and no shampoo to go with it. I picked the Laura Geller mascara, but haven’t tried it yet. This month was a loss for me 🙁

    • Years ago, someone got me started on the John Frieda sea salt spray. I’ve recently heard that it’s back, but unfortunately for me, I now get Keratin treatments, so I can’t use the sea salt spray. My wavy/curly/frizzy/birds nest hair used to LOVE the spray! Try this… On towel dried, but still wet hair, spray the spray all over. Instead of “scrunching” your curls, twist them around and around your finger until they look like ropes. The smaller the section, the tighter the curl will be. You can either twist them, and them pin them against your head until they dry, or let them hang (but you’ll probably have to keep twisting until they dry). Once dry, lightly separate using ONLY your fingers. I used to LOVE the look this gave my hair. It was never frizzy, and looked like it used to when I would spend all day at the beach when I was younger.

  2. I feel like I got a totally different box than everyone. But I do love it! I got full size eyeko skinny liquid eyeliner in black, Coola face spf 30 unscented matte tint, amika nourishing hair mask, Harvey Prince Sincerely perfume sample, and Marcelle gentle eye makeup remover. I love everything but the perfume. I can NOT wear any perfumes, they give me an instant headache. But I love love love that tinted matte spf!! Best thing ever. No greasy gross feeling whatsoever. Love the eyeliner, and will definitely use the other two items. So I’m happy with my box this month!

  3. I didn’t opt for anything but I got a full size eyeko liquid eyeliner in black. AWESOME.

  4. This was my first Birchbox month in a LONG time. I was actually really surprised at how much I liked it.

Cynthia Rowley Beauty Cream Lip Satin <– a nice rose/red color.

Essentiel (yes, spelled like that) Elements wake Up Rosemary Body Lotion <– smells like lavendar oil.

Harvey Prince Petaly Noir <– this was SO strong. Awful, and I love Harvey Prince!

Benefit Roller Lash <– amazing! I really like it.

Dr. Scheller Argan Oil Hand Care <– a big sample. I really like it a lot! I have super sensitive skin and it's lovely. I actually added it to my favorites, which means it's super special.

    • I hope I get to sample that hand cream. I love hand creams.

  5. My box was completely different, but it was almost the exact same box I received last winter. The exact same perfume sample, a hair heat protectant product, hand lotion and an eye liner pencil. The only thing that was different was a lip sample. I had cancelled my subscription for a bit, and now my renewed one isn’t off to a good start.

  6. I still haven’t received my box yet. It seems like once they send it out it takes over 2 weeks for me to receive mine. Is anyone having the same problem? I live in Washington.

    • Me either and the tracking isn’t helpful! I live in WA too.

    • same issue for me, I’m in California.

    • They’re just really weird with the shipping. I have 3 subs right now (long story, but one is a gift that expires after this month). I received one box last week, one today, and one still hasn’t arrived. And these are all coming to the same address.

    • yeah I have the same issue and I’m in Oregon.

    • I don’t even have a tracking number yet! I live in Indiana!

    • I just have a message saying my box was born on the 4th. I’m in MA.

    • I’m in Missouri and my box seems to come later and later lately. Mine’s supposed to arrive the 18th, but we’ll see. Last month it was really late, like a week past the expected arrival. I got a tracking number the 11th and the site updated my monthly box to show what I’m getting.

    • I’m in Washington, also. I still haven’t received my box. This will be my first Birchbox…when it arrives! I also subscribed to a few other boxes and have already received them. I ordered them a after my Birchbox. Plus, the tracking isn’t current.

    • Im still waiting for mine and I live in PA. The ship times for BB is getting ridiculous. Ive shipped ground via snail mail and its faster than BB, and that’s for shipping perfumes.

  7. I got the curated box for my 1st birchbox, and my 2nd birchbox account I’m getting the benefit mascara!!! But you can walk into any Sephora or Ulta & they will give you that mascara sample, for those who aren’t getting it.

    • Thanks I may have to go to Ulta and do that – been having terrible luck with my boxes lately.

  8. First time I just picked a sample and let BB pick my other samples in months, I’ve been getting the curated boxes. Super disappointed, I don’t know how everyone else gets lipgloss all the time from BB, I love it and never get it. I’m getting Supergoop CC cream, Rosemary body lotion (I hate getting lotions or anything rose scented), the Parlor sea salt spray (my hair is already thick and curly), and Beekind conditioner. I hate getting lotions and don’t use the sea salt spray at all, my hair is already really textured.

  9. I’m getting a juice beauty face wash, the marcelle eye makeup remover (which I chose), an eyeko liquid eyeliner, bee kind body lotion, and the juicy couture perfume. I HATE perfume samples and every juicy couture sample I’ve been sent reeks. I leave terrible reviews. I really wish they had a no perfume option. I always feel cheated. It goes right in the trash. Ugh. Sometimes I wonder how the logorithm works to decide who gets what because it seems like more often than not other people get the things I really want. Like the beauty blender. Dang it!

    • I got your box exactly, and other than the perfume, like everything a lot. I am totally with you on hating perfumes though. That’s my one negative with birch box.

  10. I just received my 2nd box. It was missing the eyeliner. I notified them on their site. I received a response in less thn an hour with apologies and a promise to send out a replacement. 🙂

Now I have a question. I’ve searched their FAQs but don’t see anything there. Lisa and others mention picking out their boxes or products in their boxes. How do I do this?

    • Sorry, I meant Liz, not Lisa.

    • Watch your email toward the end of the month. They will send you either a whole box to choose, or some specific samples. But be on the look out early in the day, because it only lasts until 11pm that night and by then they could be out. Sometimes they have guest editor boxes and you can choose that box, this is what I mean by a choosing a whole box. Hope that helps!

      • Thanks Liz! Do I have to be a Maven for this option?

        • Sorry, meant ACE. I’m trying to do too many things tonight!

          • No. Aces get to pick first though. I got lucky and everything was still available by the time I got to pick last time. They were a little late opening it up. They send you an email with a link you have to use. I read though you can use the same link every month. I plan on doing that this month if they are late sending emails again.

  11. I got a Birchbox subscription as a gift for my sister at Christmas and she is very disappointed in it. She doesn’t have a computer at home so she has to wait until a break at the office to sign into the Birchbox site. She is never able to opt for a pre-curated box or pick an item for her box because they are always out. The samples that she has received so far are very tiny. I will not be renewing that subscription for her.

  12. I can’t wait to get mine, but I live in MA so the snow’s made it later than normal – it won’t arrive until the end of the week. I love subscription boxes, but I’m so impatient haha.

  13. I got this exact box, and I kind of felt like you, not crazy excited, but I find I’m liking the face perfector 🙂

  14. I recently resubscribed to Birchbox and I love the fact that you can at least jump in and choose your own box occasionally – when I make it in time. (I’m always pretty happy with Ipsy’s surprises, but BB’s, not so much sometimes.) I picked the Rent the Runway-themed box this month and was really happy with everything in it.

I love to read your reviews here though to see what other people are getting in their boxes. I’m happy to see that Paula’s Choice is a featured brand. Her line has done wonders for my skin – I’ve been using just about everything in her Resist line (I’m 43) for about a year and I own this exfoliant as well. I always get questions about what skin care products I use. Can’t rave about her enough — she also has a great sister website with unbiased reviews about cosmetics and skin care products – Beautypedia, like a Consumer Reports for beauty – and it’s awesome if you want the truth behind a product’s ingredients and marketing hype. I wasted so much money in the past buying stuff that turned out to be meh before I found it. (And speaking of marketing hype, I swear I’m not a PR shill for her. Heck, I should be though.)

OK, but yeah, now I totally want to try that Rollerlash mascara.

  15. I’m getting a Number 4 hair protector spray, which apparently is a good detangler so that will go to my daughters. A lime green eye pencil (I can’t imagine what one would do with that, is it eve swappable?), Cynthia Rowley lip stain (always glad to get those type of products), Gilchrist & Soames body lotion (sort of blah about that) and a Harvey Prince Hello perfume. I love perfume samples, so that excites me.

What would be ideal is if I could find someone who likes colored pencils but dislikes perfume – then we could save a bunch of each and trade.

    • Mine and a friends showed lime green but we got different colors and its a great eyeliner! She got a gold and I got a dark green.

    • I am getting the same box – the lip stain sounds good. That Gilchrist & Soames body lotion is used in hotels, my mother-in-law has quite a few from her hotel stays – not too excited about this box. Next one hopefully will be better.

    • I love colored eyeliners and I have/get tons of perfume samples I would be happy to swap. I subscribe to several beauty sub boxes and get tons of samples frim sephora and other online beauty retailers. My email is [email protected] or [email protected]. Hope to hear from you! : )

      • Great, I will e-mail you after I get my boxes so I can tell you what colors I got. I’m actually getting two February boxes, and the second one ALSO has a colored pencil.

Actually, the second box has very similar colors. A detangler, but of a different brand, a different Gilchrist & Soames body lotion, a different perfume (yay!) and then a face tint with sunscreen, which I am looking forward to try. But swapping the colored pencils would be great. I know I have a couple of others I’ve gotten in other boxes.

    • I’m your girl. I have fragrance to swap and have wanted that Sumita Lime Eyeliner. My swap profile is 1374..I have Chloe and Juicy from Feb boxes and others from earlier boxes.

    • Hi Nana….I used to adore perfume samples but now work with cancer patients and must be fragrance free. I’d love to exchange perfume samples for color eye pencils….i sub to a few boxes. clikeness at antioch dot edu

    • Found! I hate perfume samples, as I tend to stick to one fragrance. But brightly pigmented eyeliners are my jam. Please email me at [email protected]

For perfume for eyeliner trades. I am approved for Liz’s swaps page. But prefer mailing out directly. Just let me know wht works for you.

  16. In the year and a half I’ve been subscribed to BB I’ve had two boxes with leaky things – and BB immediately sent out two fresh/full boxes. I say this part just so some subscribers know that if you have a problem – tell them! They are great IMO at handling things.

I recently ordered through the ACE sale they were having and when I received my box I had 2 extra freebie packets (both tea – probably about 10-12 packets in total, which is great because I love tea, which BB knows based on my purchases). I really appreciated the extra freebies, as my purchase was all with points and only about $18. I emailed them to thank them for always having amazing customer service and doing nice things randomly (and having a great point system!) and they gave me 100 points for being a happy customer!

I think most people are happy with them, and I mean this comment not as a brag, but as a “positive review experience” of them because I wanted to do something in return for how nice they’ve been to me – and a good comment on a popular blog sounded appropriate!

    • After dealing with Allure Sample Society/, I appreciate Birchbox customer service even more!

      • so exciting. I just got THREE boxes to open (already got Birchbox yesterday Try the World (finally) Glossy Box and Juelp. Yeah!

  17. I also got the Rent the Runway box and it is probably one if my favorite boxes , received it on Monday Feb 9th !!

  18. i’m really really disappointed in my box. after many emails to birchbox to try to get the guest curated box i didnt get it. so annoying their customer service with the emails (lack of emails!) sucks ! i emailed my selection 3x and still didnt get it. I’m getting an ugly lime green eyeliner, eye makeup remover, lip balm, hair mask, and shampoo. : ( at least no perfume ! off to try to find out if the benefit balm is GF.

    • Sounds like a great box lol

  19. I received the same box as you did, Liz. My verdit was that this box was OK. I really hate getting perfume and body wash samples. This perfume did have a nice scent and I can throw it in my gym bag or travel bag. SO I will be able to use it. I did like the lip gloss and sea salt spray. I already use PC products, including a BHA exfoliant. So I can use the sample size in my travel bag.

  20. I got the Rent the Runway box and it is probably one if my favorite boxes ever. I will use every single item! I hope next month is equally awesome! Also, I feel that I got my box incredibly fast this month, which was also great…got shipping notification Friday and received box Saturday!!

  21. I didn’t opt for anything. The curated box didn’t appeal to me and neither did any of the sample choices. I’m SO glad I didn’t choose anything!

I’m getting a BEAUTY BLENDER (!!!!!), juice beauty cleanser, body wash, bee kind conditioner, and the balm lip gloss. Best box I’ve ever gotten, so excited to try the beauty blender out. I’ve always wanted to try it but could never justify the $20 price tag

    • That sounds like a great box! (I love my Beauty Blender). I think I may have to try the opt for nothing approach next month 🙂

    • What is a beauty blender?

    • I didn’t opt for anything and i got the stupid makeup remover with parabens that I OBVIOUSLY didn’t want because I didn’t pick it, Marcelle Gentle Eye Make-Up Remover For Sensitive Eyes. I also got Juice Beauty® GREEN APPLE™ Cleansing Gel, amika Nourishing Mask, Benefit Ultra Plush Lip Gloss, and Sumita Color Contrast Eyeliner. Not excited for this month 🙁

      • I got the same exact box… My eyeliner is a midnight blue color. (So much better than lime green.) I’m really trying to like Birchbox. But, Ipsy always seems to be worth more$$ and I seem to like them better…. Paid for a year of birch…

    • I have the same box!!! You are going to LOVE the Beauty Blender. I already have 3 (received a 2 pack for Christmas) and they are amazing.

    • Yours is exactly the one I’m getting to (whenever it gets here). I’m so excited to try the beauty blender, the gloss, and the bee conditioner. Happy!

    • You are going to love the beauty blender! I’m getting the same box and I’m excited to have a spare!

      • I got the Beauty Blender from Bauble Bar as a surprise gift (SO NICE!!)! I’m so excited to try it! I’ve always wanted to try it but never have due to the price. I’ve used cheaper Sephora brand sponges and have liked them, so I think I’m going to LOVE the Beauty Blender!!

  22. I received the exact same box. I’ve subscribed for 4 months and this is my first “meh” box, so I’ll give it a pass! I’m also hopeful I’ll get more excited when I get a chance to try everything.

  23. It’s so funny because I have perfume samples as a favorite! I love getting them because otherwise I pay a lot of money to buy them because I can never seem to get anybody In the stores to give me some. But I NEVER get perfume samples in my boxes!

    • Anna! That’s crazy, cuz I ALWAYS get perfume samples in my Birchbox even though I say in my profile not to send them! Seriously, for years, I’ve been subscribing and just shaking my head at the amount of perfume samples (and tea sachets!).

    • Anna, go on the swap site because people are all trying to give them away! I put all mine up for swap every time! (Can’t use fragrance but ipsy and BB don’t seem to care lol)

  24. I got the rent the runway box and am happy except that the Not Soap Radio shower gel/bodywash/whatever it is had leaked over everything. But at least it didn’t ruin anything. That mascara sounds amazing

    • Email Birchbox about the leaky product. They have good customer service and will make amends. 🙂

    • Yes, in my first box one of the products leaked all over. They sent me a replacement right away.

  25. I’m getting Laura Geller volumizing mascara,TheBalm Lip Gloss,Harvey Prince perfume,Davines MINU Shampoo,Davines MINU Hair Serum and Paula’s Choice clinical KP treatment cloths. I’m happy with my box.

  26. I didn’t get a rent the runway box but I just got an email from birchbox saying they accidentally left out the coupon. So I bet every box gets one.

    • Just got that email too – this is my first Birchbox. Not a good start.

      • It’s my second, but it doesn’t bother me considering they were able to email it to me and didn’t have to mail it. And I got the code before I even got the box! They made it right before I even knew something was wrong.

    • Oh – I’m not sure about using that coupon anyway.

      • Me either. I would be way happier if it was a birchbox coupon!

        • Me too.

  27. I got Harvey Prince perfume sample, Laura Geller GlamLASH, Perlier body butter, Dear Clark Wash and Rinse.

    • I got the same box as you, Yvette. I love the mascara so far and the Harvey Prince Hello perfume was nice. I like that it had a spray pump. I could pass on the shampoo and conditioner though.

  28. Bummer about the perfume sample! I haven’t gotten my box yet but I’m excited for the benefit coupon since I’m almost out of the porefessional!

  29. Is the rent the runway box the only one that comes with the code? Thats such a bummer if so 🙁

    • Are you talking about the rent the runway code ($30 off of 75)? I am not using mine, if you want it I will gladly give it to you so it doesn’t go to waste. Just let me know.

      • Anyone who wants my code can have it too. Just let me know!

        • I would love to use your code if you still haven’t given away!

  30. How do you guys check exactly what samples youre gonnae get? All this waiting is driving me crazy!

    • Go to their web site and after you sign it, select “your box” from one of the options at the top. You get to see what you will get the 10th of each month.

      • I did that it and it didn’t show me anything – it just went to info about joining.

        • same here 🙁

      • I’ve been doing the same and it just shows me my January box still 🙁 I’m dying to know what I’m getting. First time in a few months I’m not getting the curated box. I only just received my tracking # this morning.

  31. I haven’t gotten my box but saw the spoiler and am not excited at all. I am getting the Roller Lash and am looking forward to that. I have a perfume sample coming too and I’m not excited about it either. I would like to get the lip gloss. We’ll see when I actually get the box.

  32. I’m continuously baffled by gluten free cosmetics. You aren’t eating it.

    • Depending on the product, it is being absorbed by the body. So if you’re gluten intolerant or have Celiac disease, it can be an issue. Rather like having a food allergy; it doesn’t require much to trigger a bad reaction. I good friend has Celiac disease and tries to avoid cosmetics and skincare containing gluten due to severe reactions. I’d never even considered it, though I’m deathly allergic to shellfish and some forms/preparations of iodine and have to be extra careful about cosmetics and skincare products, especially bath items.

    • I am celiac and very strict gluten free. I do not use any lip product containing gluten whatsoever since indeed you actually are eating it ! think of how many times per day you lick your lips or get it on yoru cup or fork and then eat/drink off of it. in general i’m not as strict with other items like eye makeup but if im going to the beach you better believe my sunscreen i will put all over my face and body all week needs to be GF. people that are celiac are often very very sensitive. 20 parts per million is enough to make you sick. that’s smaller than a breadcrumb in most instances. Not trying to be preachy or rude, but maybe my comment will help you to understand a bit the severity of the problem for some people.

  33. How do you get your box so fast? I havent gotten tracking yet and I am an Ace!

I have been eying that new Benefit Roller Lash mascara too. Here is my favorite make-up artists review. He is so funny!

    • Yikes! Sorry ladies, I didnt know it would show up like that! I meant for just the link, in case you wanted to watch it. 🙁

      • I enjoyed it. 🙂

  34. How do you get your box so early?? I still haven’t received tracking for mine, nor has the website updated to my February box yet.

  35. Oh, I forgot about the Rent the Runway code. I won’t be using it. So if someone wants to trade for it, I’m open to trades.

  36. I ordered the Rent the Runway curated box and am fairly happy with it.
The Not Soap Radio “The stuff that Cupid dips his arrows in (because sometimes fate needs an assist” pheromone activation bubbles smells amazing; just like blackberries and vanilla. So sweet and yummy. I have not used it yet so I can’t confirm the effectiveness of the pheromones but time will tell. 🙂 The sample is 1.5 fl oz., so good for a few baths.

The Fekkai Blowout Hair Refresher Dry Shampoo was a welcome product in this month’s Birchbox. I’m disabled and not always feeling up to washing and drying and styling my hair so dry shampoos decrease the steps to beautiful hair plus they give my hair great volume. And the Fekkai brand is one that nearly everyone has heard of and is a quality brand. It was also a fairly good sized sample at 1.7 oz.

The Derma|e Anti-Wrinkle Vitamin A Glycolic Scrub is not something I would have purchased on my own but will definitely use. It is paraben free, cruelty free, 100% vegan and all natural. The package states that it exfoliates dull, tired, aging cells; all of which I have these days, and that it cleanses away impurities for a refreshed, healthy glow. I have used other products from Derma|e in the past and have enjoyed them. The sample size is a generous 1 oz tube so it will last weeks.

I won’t use the other two samples: Sumita Beauty Raina Contrast Eye Pencil in navy blue because I tend to wear only brown, plum and the occasional black. Nor the Balm Read My Lips lip gloss in Bam! I only wear red lip color because it just looks best with my light olive skin tone, dark hair and dark eyes. Pink just washes me out. What is the obsession with lip gloss, especially PINK lipgloss. I’m not in high school in the 1980s. I’m a woman who needs real color; not bubblegum pink.

But as the other products are great, I don’t mind the last two. I’ll find a good use for them. Whether it is to gift them or trade them to whom they are better suited.

    • You might want to give the navy eyeliner a try. It would be a lovely shade against a light olive complexion and especially when paired with a red lip. It’s all about discovery with sample subs so why not give it a test drive? I didn’t think I’d care for it either but it is quite dark so it’s not glaring blue like an 80s flashback gone wrong.

    • Ditto! Lol! Your post is exactly how I feel about my items!

    • I got the same exact box. I haven’t opened the liner yet. I assumed it was black so I hope mine is Navy!

  37. If the perfume samples were bigger I wouldn’t complain. But they are tiny and should never count as an item. I feel cheated whenever I get one.

  38. I got the rent the runway box and I mostly really liked the products. The Fekkai dry shampoo smells amazing!! I could do without another pink lipgloss though. Better than a perfume sample at least! Overall I’m glad I opted for this box.

    • Forgot to add that the box itself was really pretty with a romantic rose border.

  39. Different sulfate. The most common bad ones you will find in beauty products are sodium laureth sulfate and sodium lauryl sulfate. In addition to bleaching my hair I have psoriasis on my scalp and sulfates burn the hell out of it. So I avoid sulfates completely. The kind in this spray does not bother me.

  40. Loved my Rent the Runway box this month! The Fekkai dry shampoo smells like Finesse! Love that smell. Also got a face scrub, the same lippie, and Not Soap bodywash/bubbles. Would have loved to try the sea salt spray…maybe another time.

    • I’ll be putting my spray on the swap board, if you’re interested!

  41. I got the same box! I was really excited about it since December and January were such duds for me (so much so I made profile changes). I really just enjoyed the variety (skin care, hair care, make up I’ll actually use). I was even happy about the perfume because I loved Viva La Juicy and was happy to NOT get another Harvey Prince .

I will say I’m disappointed in the spray. I am constantly on the search for something comparable to John Freda’s Beach Waves (which actually is back on store shelves) so I’ve tried my fair share of sea salt sprays and this one definitely falls towards the bottom of the list. I didn’t like the smell, didn’t provide much as far as waves go but I will say it wasn’t sticky or crunchy in my hair. Not what I was expecting from something featured in BB.

    • Just worth a mention, EcoSevi makes a wonderful Blue Yarrow Sea Salt spray!

      • I’ll have to check it out, I’m always up for trying new ones. Thanks for the tip!

  42. Different kind of sulfate. In magnesium sulfate solutions, the sulfate isn’t bonded to anything, it’s just a free ion. The sulfates people say to avoid (like if you have chemically treated hair) are chemically bonded to other molecules to form detergents. Magnesium sulfate isn’t a detergent! (I hope this helps…I tend to get trapped in chemistry PhD language and I’m trying to avoid that.)

    • This is so helpful, you rock! I am not a chemist and I think I understand what you said. 😛

    • Very helpful as always Sneaky Burrito!

  43. That exfoliant is HG for me. Hope lots of them turn up on the swap site!

  44. I’m getting the sea salt spray and the roller lash mascara. Woo hoo!

  45. I got the same as you did I like everything I got but do u rinse your face after putting the face stuff on with a cotton ball? Or leave it on?

    • You’re supposed to leave it on, according to the bottle. I got my box yesterday and tried it last night after cleansing and toning. I applied it with a swissper and left it on. Once it dried, I followed it with a glamglow thirstymud mask and my skin looks really good this morning. I was worried that leaving it on would be irritating, but that doesn’t seem to be the case at all!

  46. I was really hoping to try that mascara!! It seams pretty cool. Oh well, maybe in another sub Box.

  47. My one account I got the Rent the Runway box – which arrived on Saturday – shocking to get it so early. I was hoping for a different color eyeliner – it came with Navy (Raina). I am trying my best to not open the lip balm as I currently have so many in rotation right now – hand creams and lip balms – I’ve got them all over the house, car, my desk/cube. My other account has not shipped yet (to the best of my knowledge). It is alleged to contain: Juice Beauty Blemish Clearing Cleanser (so going to my teen), Eyeko Skinny Liquid Eyeliner – still never used the one from Glossybox – it too will be listed on your swap page with the 500 others – wish these came in other colors – I’m pale and blonde and look better with light color eyeliners – I want white, gold, or bright colors for fun. BeeKind Body Lotion – my other account had this in it last year and while I didn’t like it I actually used every drop – it smells great but wished it lasted longer or was a bit richer. Marcelle Gentle Eye Make-up Remover – this was my sample choice for the month. Juicy Couture Hollywood Royal – this is going to my sister. I also will likely send her the $30 rent the runway coupon. I’m okay with what I am getting this month. Sometimes things I think I’ll never use are still fun to try.

  48. I’m getting the same box as you ! But I’m still waiting the box (I’m on the west coast).
I like this box and I’m pretty exciting to try every samples except the perfume sample. I’m not a huge fan of perfume sample either…
I’m clearly need a exfoliant and I’ve never tried this one !
I love shower gel so I’m happy to get one !
The hair spray was my sample choice : I’m curious about trying this !
The lips balm : If it’s not too pink, maybe I will like it !
It’s only my third Birchbox and so far so good 🙂
I’m hoping for next boxes to have more skin care and hair mask, though !

  49. I wrote to them complaining about perfume samples yesterday. I never use them so whenever they send me one I land up giving it away. Such a waste. They haven’t responded even though as an ACE member my complaint should have “floated on top of their inbox”. oh well!!

    • I don’t think anyone can opt out of getting perfume samples entirely, even though you can indicate in your preferences you don’t like perfume and they will only send a couple each year. I think we all deal with getting things we don’t like in sub boxes – if we were able to completely customize them I don’t think they’d be able to charge us as little as $10 a month.

It’s pretty easy to reach Ace status, so there are lots of us, and I’m betting they get a lot of customer service emails this time of the month. It’s frustrating to wait, but I believe everyone should get equal treatment whether they are an Ace or not. Calling customer service is probably the quickest way to get a response.

If you’re afraid things will go to waste, you could always trade or donate to a shelter. 🙂

      • Hear hear Allie. 🙂

  50. I got the rent the runway box. I got it because I really like the fekkai dry shampoo and that alone was worth the pick for me. The rest of the items I’ll give a shot too, but overall I’m happy with this month’s box.
