Birchbox Review - February 2014 Card

Each box comes with a card detailing the items included and some tips on how to use them.

Birchbox Review - February 2014 Ruby Wing

Juicy Couture Couture La La Malibu Perfume – .05 oz Value $1.44

Ruby Wing Color Changing Polish in Kitten Heels – .25 oz Value $5

I’m never too thrilled to get a perfume sample in a beauty box, but I am loving the barbie-pink colors in this picture! Plus the color-changing polish should be fun!

Birchbox Review - February 2014 Beauty Protector

Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner – . 25 oz Value $11.25

Beauty Protector Protect & Oil – Value $3

Glancing at Instagram, it looked like quite a few subscribers received this item broken in transit, so I was really happy to see my Beauty Protector intact! I like that this is a Birchbox launch exclusive, and I love the scent of Beauty Protector hair products.

Birchbox Review - February 2014 32

32 Oral Care Effervescent Breath Crystals – Value $1 total

These breath fresheners are essentially pop rocks for adults! (Definitely an appropriate lifestyle extra for a red-carpet event!)

Verdict: I paid $10 for this box and received about $22 worth of products. I would have loved to see a full size item in this box. (I think I’m spoiled from the January Birchbox), but I’m still happy with the items I received.

What did you get in your February Birchbox?

  1. I got shampoo and conditioner for color treated hair, tinted moisturizer, eye cream, and the breath crystals. I really liked my box this month! I wasn’t as crazy about last month’s box as I got the dry shampoo and the Nail Rock polish… I usually wash my hair every day (yes I know you’re “not supposed to”…), and I don’t have time to do the Nail Rock polish very often – I’m lucky to have time to do regular nail polish.

As for perfume samples, I put “not my favorite” but I actually don’t mind getting them occasionally.

And as for income, I don’t think it makes a difference in the kind of samples you get. I have the LOWEST income on the selections, and I’ve gotten good boxes most of the time (or maybe I’m just easily pleased. 😀 )

  2. I received the miracle skin transformer, the OPI sheer tint (tiny bottle), a hair half-up accessory, Joan Vass perfume sample, and breath mints. I’m happy. The only thing I gave away was the perfume. I sub to ipsy also, but I love that BB is usually more skincare oriented.

  3. I got a completely different box from Liz, which included a (different) hair oil, miracle skin transformer tube, a pretty good size strivectin tube, body butter tube, and 2 tea packets. I was decently pleased with my box. My preferences are more toward skin care so I feel like Birchbox listened to me on this one. Also I had been getting too many nail polishes, and I griped a bit on a review I did, and this month I got no nail polish. Perhaps they listened? Anyhow, for $10 and their points system I’ve been pretty pleased.

  4. I got a sample of the hair oil (gave it to my daughter who has problems with breakage & stuff). Gave her the perfume sample too because she liked it. I got the nail tint, which I’m curious about, the Truffle Serum & the tea (which I might give to a work friend). I’m happy with it. I’m getting an Ipsy box next month as well & it will be interesting to compare the two.

  5. I have two subs and despite different answers got the same in both boxes. It was different from what everyone else seemed to be getting. I’m really unhappy with this box. So getting 2 of the same crap. A natural mascara that smells funny and does nothing. A perfume hello sample, smells OK. Shampoo and conditioner. A body butter that smells awful and is overwhelming.

  6. Got my first box today and actually I was pretty happy with it since I got eye liner. I got (I assume) full size Cynthia Rowley liquid eye liner, the hair protector oil, Juicy perfume sample, Ayers soap, and three tea bags. I’ve not tried the soap but it looks like hotel soap, which I find kind of funny for some reason. I think I like how it and the oil smell. Not sure about the perfume. I liked it when I first sprayed it but the longer I wear it, the less I think I like it.

  7. I actually loved this month’s BB. I got two tea bags from a great company, lovely truffle moisturizer, the same hair oil and a cool nail tint. For me the fragrance- hello- by harvey prince- was the only miss.

  8. I received 3 products that I don’t think I have seen on anyone’s comments: Paula’s choice Resist ultra light antioxidant concentrate serum Full Size(26.95). I am wearing it now and it feels like silk! Also Full Size Whish Three Wishes Body Butter (24.00) and packet of 6 Dry Dedorant Swipes for Clothes. I am pleased. Plus the BP and eye shadows. Love this box.

    • It looks like we got the same box. Beauty Protector hair oil (perfect for me…long hair on the dry side), Coastal Scents Eye Shadow Palette (3 of the 4 colors I love), Paula’s Choice serum, Whish Body Butter (I’m not loving the pomegranite scent, but it may smell better on), and the Reviver dry deodorant swipes for clothes (they say it’s also good on hair, which I’m excited about). Not my favorite Birch Box…but this one was decent.

  9. Last months Birchbox was a real letdown for me, but this month was so MUCH better. I got The OPI pink nail tint, the Benefit Fakeup, Pores No More, Balancing Act (which is a sample on a card) and The Agave hair oil. I loved everything. I’m super addicted to the hair oil now. I might need to save up some points. The full size is $40.

  10. So just got my box today kinda happy with it wish the tinted nail polish(in don’t violet me down) had been full size and had gotten something other than he truffle serum the tea sounds really good even though I don’t really drink much tea I’ll give it another couple months to really try it since this is my first box

  11. I actually really liked my box this month. I had been receiving a ton of skin care stuff, so I tweeked my profile, which seemed to help. I got the tinted top coat (which isn’t my favorite, but I like the idea of it, so I’m glad I got to try it in a sample instead of buying it full price.) I got the SOS eye cream, which I tried this morning and surprisingly really like. It’s not something I’d usually buy. And a nice size sample of shampoo & conditioner that I’m looking forward to trying. I also receiving the tea, and I’m a tea drinker, so I liked that.

Maybe not the best box I’ve gotten, but I’m happy with the samples.

  12. My first ever birch box was women health box I think feb 2013.
I’m gonna vent since I’ve gotten some great boxes since November 2013. I’ve gotten problems from missing items, to product orders missing item or broken, lost my first birch box man January a month later it shows up. They promised me march birch box man since febuary is out of stock. Sending out products that are expired. Oh and now my febuary women’s box came full of glass from the oil breaking. I already own the matte coola sunscreen and have no eye lashes for that massacre. Pink ruby nail Polish looked cool though. Sighs every order has a problems and I just subbed for a year.

  13. I don’t think I’ve seen a review with the items I received today: hair half up thing (?), body butter, face serum, muti-use color sample & tea. SO SICK OF TEA!!! Anyway, I keep saying to myself it’s only $10 but every month I’m giving most of it away, I may as well go spend the $10 at Starbucks, at least I know I’ll enjoy it!

  14. Didn’t get my box yet, but I’m pretty sure, its going to be my worst. Disappointed this month

  15. Just opened my box today. It seemed pretty full, so not sure what everyone else is talking about, but maybe I just got bigger products. I got the mouth crystals, Harvey Prince Hello, shampoo and conditioner, and eye palate sample. I like the smell of the perfume and the sample size doesn’t bother me since I don’t wear perfume a lot. The shampoo and conditioner samples look pretty big so I’m excited about those and the palate colors are silvers, which I don’t currently own any of so Im Thrilled to try out. Overall, not an amazinggg box, but the again it’s only ten dollars so I’m content!

  16. My box was a little bit different. I have been getting the box for two months and was going to cancel. This was the best box of them all. My samples were good sized. I am in love with the Hello perfume. I’m now on a waiting list to get it. I hope my next box won’t be a let down like the first two months.

  17. Wait, I don’t get this… This is supposed to be my first box, so why does my account say “processing”? My credit card was charged at the end of last month and my confirmation says shipping on 2/10/14. Is this normal?

    • Never mind. I found a tracking number. Still don’t understand why it says processing, but, oh well…

      • Three months later and mine still says processing too, so I don’t really think it means anything

  18. Still waiting for it to arrive but from the looks of my sub page I’m getting Harvey Prince Hello, Skin and Co Truffle Anti Aging Serum (odd I have the anti-aging unchecked on my profile), the Hair Oil, Harney and Sons Tea and OPI Tinted Top Coat. I’m kind of excited for it but was hoping to try the color changing polish and the Dr. Brandt Pores No More

  19. I am really doubting that they use income as guidelines for what they send. I (truthfully) put our income as the highest listed. I have been signed up for 2 months and have only gotten teas, clothes deodorizer, foils of shampoos/conditioner and a granola bar. Oh, and a vial of perfume. All junk in my opinion and not what you’d expect from a company that is about skin care and beauty. I canceled. I’m not going to get my hopes up that next month will be better when I feel it won’t. I wanted to sample new things to buy and change up my routine. Instead I was upset and asking myself why would I stay subscribed to a company that “plays favorites”. I have a feeling that being a blogger, instead of income, determines how nice your items are.

  20. I’m on the fence with this month’s box. When I opened it, I was surprised how empty it looked with the paper covering the small samples! I received a small OPI topcoat in shade Be Magentale with Me. I’ve never used a tinted topcoat, so that might be interesting. I also got the agave healing oil, but it doesn’t list the ingredients, so I’ll have to research before I can use it. I have a severe gluten allergy and products with wheat protein give me allergy attacks. I got the pore no more which also doesn’t list the ingredients. The benefit fake-up isn’t really for me. I don’t really use concealers, and this seems to have a lot of chemicals and dyes in it. Lastly, I got a very small sample of benefit big easy. This sample is so small I think there is enough in there to cover my nose!? It’s tiny!

    • I got the exact same box except my OPI topcoat is blue tinted (which is actually perfect for me as I mostly wear non-traditional shades). I’ve always loved Birchbox but this box just felt so skimpy – the oil treatment I’d love but that’s likely not enough sample (and I have very thin hair!) and the box just felt so empty. Really disappointed this time around.

  21. Birchbox is slipping, I’m considering just sticking strictly with Ipsy. Way too many repeats and the products are a little out of left field.

  22. This will be my first Birchbox and I’m already disappointed. I’ve had the Dr.Brandt Pores No More and am not impressed and the nail polish is definitely not me. Hmmm

  23. I would like to see at least bigger sample sizes. I’ve been thinking about canceling. I love birchbox but sometimes I am honestly insulted by the Tiny size samples that you can get for free from the department store in the box. I feel like birchbox never ever sends anything full size either while Ipsy does. I do think the points/rewards system is fabulous!

  24. I’m giving itbine mire montg but I’ve yet to be thrilled. I have yet to receive a full size product. I know its just 10$ but I pay just 10$ for ipsy and they always have at least one full size product. This month they even have a zoya polish. I also do not like reading that birchbox may base what you get in the income they ask you on the survey. I know people that save every penny for top products and this should not be a factor – its income discrimination

  25. I am jealous of your hot pink color changing nail polish (I got the same brand last month in chunky gold glitter), and your Dr. Brandt Pores No More Pore Refiner! I would have much preferred that over some things that I got in my box this month. I received Caudalie S.O.S. Morning eye renewal, 2 of the Harney and Sons wrapped tea satchets (I don’t drink tea so I will give these 2 little tea bags to people at work), OPI Sheer Tints Top Coat in ‘I Can Teal You Like Me’, and Bain de Terre Passion Flower color preserving shampoo and conditioner. I didn’t get any deluxe sample sizes, but am still happy with the sized that I received. I’m fairly satisfied but after hearing about what everyone else received, I am feeling a little bit gipped. This was supposed to be a “red carper ready” box. Besides the morning eye renewal which very loosely fits in this category, I don’t see anything red carpet about this box.

  26. I received the bright pink nail polish that turns red, BP Oil, the smashbox full exposure Mascara, coola tinted matte and the smashbox full exposure paper sample of the eye shadow.
When I saw the preview on my profile, I thought the eye shadow sample was going to be like the coastal scents revealed palette sample that had 4 little shadows. NOPE, it’s a card, that I MIGHT be able to get one use out of (for one eye). I can’t really complain, I like everything else, but seems like last years February box was a bad one too. I know some people say Ipsy is better, but I had Ipsy for 3 months and was not happy. Yes, you get some full sized items, but they are cheaper brands, and I still have items that I never used. I’ll need to think of going to another subscription service.

  27. This was my first month and I did two separate subs. Out of 10 total products, I got probably 2 that I will actually use – a body butter and a soap.

I never, ever want perfume samples unless I pick them out myself – and I had checked they were not my favorites on their survey – but I managed to get them in BOTH boxes. And both are Juicy which I already know I don’t like.

One box had: Ahmad Tea Assorted Teas, Ayres Bar Soap, Cynthia Rowley Beauty Liquid Liner, Beauty Protector Oil, Juicy Couture’s La La Malibu

The other had: Juicy Couture’s Juicy Couture, Whish Three Whishes Body Butter, SarahPotempa HALF-UP, Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight, 32 Breath Crystals

I don’t drink tea. I hate black eyeliners and mascaras (so lucky me that Glossy is sending another in Feb. as well), I don’t use oil products on my hair, I never wear my hair up, I am very leery of most untried skin products (since I have sensitive skin and the Apothederm Bright Skin Serum in last month’s Ipsy bag basically gave me a chemical burn), and I guess we’ll try the breath crystal samples as a novelty but I’m not paying that price to repurchase them.

It just feels like they tossed a bunch of stuff in boxes, more than put groupings together with thought or purpose. None of this is even me – I would have been so much happier with at least one item from OPI, Benefit, Dr. Brandt, Serge Normant, etc. The teaser video in no way reflects my boxes! I’ve already dropped one subscription before it’s even arrived. I’ll give them one more chance, but not two.

  28. I’m getting the exact same box as you! 🙂

  29. So, I am confused…Maybe other BB’s can help me out. My BB profile says I will be getting mascara, moisturizer, the hair oil, nail polish and a deluxe sample of the smashbox eye palette?! That just can’t be right.
A co-worker’ page stated she would be receiving the benefit, moisturizer, hair oil, nail polish and the silver bag kit of dr. brandt?!
It is actually marked on both of our pages as separate line items included in the box marked as deluxe samples. They are not marked as items that you may want to purchase or these items our BB exclusives that I may be interested in. Anybody else see these fantastic items on their BB pages?

I assume they mean my mascara can be purchased as the eye palette and her moisturizer is included in the bag if she chooses to purchase separately. I have never seen BB add these to my profile pages before.

    • I’m not quite sure what you are asking BUT I do know that the Smashbox sample is cardboard. And the other people who have seen the silver kit on their profile got the Dr Brandt Pores No More that is pictured with the kit (not the whole kit).

      • Hi Saffy,

My BB profile says I will be getting a deluxe sample of the eye palette. Which I thought was too good to be true. Apparently it is, as a single paper use sample screened with shadow does not qualify as a deluxe sample in my eyes.
        Oh, well.
In regards to income changing your profile–I also added years to mine(an entire decade!)–I am not getting old lady products, usually just better quality… I have been very happy with my geriatric boxes-except for this one!

  30. I do not think income matters. I have a high income and always get the odd box not many get. I got the dry conditioner, the benifit eye cream & big easy sample, the organic lip/blush compact, & the juicy perfume. I wonder if I say I am younger I will get the hair stuff and polish:D I did not get the opi or the full size polish last month

    • I am 36 and I got dry conditioner last month. My income is reasonably high. Actually, I canceled Birchbox last month because even though it was only my second box, I’d gotten too many highly-scented body butters (I have sensitive skin and don’t like a lot of fragrance in my skincare products) and hair products I would never use.

      • I’m gonna be you in 8 years. I’m already getting annoyed with smells in products I put on my face, body whatever.

    • Leigh,
I got the same box as you-it was very, very sad. I’ve heard good things about the dry conditioner, but mine feels almost empty. I’m excited about the eye cream, but the other samples are tiny. I am also in the high income bracket and don’t think it has affected what I’ve received, but I also paid for the annual subscription. Since I did that, I’ve been receiving somewhat crappier boxes.

      • I’m not sure why everyone thinks a high income should matter, as every subscriber pays the same $10/mo? I’ve always figured that they base the boxes on your preferences.

  31. I still am very glad I canceled my subscription. I would rather go with another service then keep getting bad boxes from them. I canceled mine in December when they didn’t send me a full product d the rest of the products in the box looked like they just threw whatever in from a bin. I mean, 1 hair tie, a cheap blue nail polish they’d already sent me, etc. I subscribed to Julep Maven and though I am looking for another service,I’m extremely happy.

  32. I got the benefit concealer, the opi top coat that leaked over all my products and box, the pores no more, and the agave hair oil that exploded. This is my second box after resubscribing and I’m a little upset about it. I emailed them and hopefully I get an email back :/

  33. I received box #3, but had to email customer service because I’m missing my perfume sample. Trying to trade my hair oil and pores no more, but happy with the OPI nail polish and breath mints. Not a great box, just okay.

    • hey! i read that you were interested in trading your pores no more. it looks like i wont be getting that in my box and i’m so sad 🙁
my box will include: AYRES Bar Soap, OPI Sheer Tints Color-Tinted Top Coat, Miracle Skin Transformer Face Spotlight SPF 20 (and then the perfume and the oil). Let me know if you would be interested in swapping any of those!

  34. I knew this box wasn’t gonna to be great!

  35. I LOVE the BP oil! makes my hair so soft

  36. According to BB I am getting the Dr.Brandt, Benefit Fakeup, Benefit Big Easy, Agave healing oil treatment and an OPI tinted top coat. I recently changed my household income prior to this box being sent out, and I really do think it makes a difference in the quality of products. Last month I was ready to cancel (AGAIN) after getting my first box after reinstating my subscription. This month makes up for it and will keep me around to check out what comes in March to help me make a final decision. But I really do think the income change helped.

    • I got that same box and trust me you won’t be pleased with it.

    • I got the same box and I was super happy. The big easy sample was crummy, but I loved everything else.

  37. As much as that nail polish is a super cute color, I have gotten it before and didn’t have any luck with it. It literally was almost completly chipping off my fingers in the first 2 hours of wear (with a top coat). I was so disappointed I threw it in the garbage. I think you need a heavy duty top coat for this stuff, maybe Julep’s Polymore Top Coat would work for it.

  38. This makes me not regret cancelling Birchbox. Nothing exciting there at all!

    • I know! I was looking at the reviews pictures and I just had to laugh.

    • I would say the same, but Liz’s boxes and mine were never similar at all, so I don’t think this would have been what I would have gotten if I hadn’t canceled. (Makes sense — I love her reviews but she and I don’t have the same taste in a lot of things, plus our hair is totally different.)

    • For those who have canceled and are unhappy with recent Birchboxes–what would you like to see more of? Would there be anything that would make you re-subscribe?

      • Fair question. For me, some sort of way to opt out of hair products I wouldn’t ever use. I wash my hair every day so dry conditioner is useless to me. I wear my hair straight so hair spray is useless to me (my hair is waist-length so I don’t need spray to keep it in place). No more strongly-scented body butters (I got the Camille Beckman one in a cut on my leg and it actually hurt).

I thought I was being truthful when I filled out the questionnaire but I could only use maybe 2 of the beauty products from each of the 2 boxes I got.

I guess that’s more of what I’d like to see LESS of. What would I like to see more of? Since there is a lot of customization that goes into the questionnaire, maybe something about having sensitive skin so I could avoid dyes and fragrances (I can wear perfume, but I can’t do strong fragrances in lotions without getting a rash). Larger lifestyle samples maybe (I liked the tea from January and the chocolates from December, but the chocolates were tiny). Perhaps the ability to opt out of or reduce certain types of samples, the way you do with perfume?

      • Maybe if you could select things that you do not want. I got nail polish (I’m a Julep Maven) and hair products that would not work in my hair in just about every box.

And if the boxes actually matched our profiles. Mine said I loved fragance samples, lotions/hand creams and skincare, but I rarely got those in my box.

        • I agree, it’s annoying to get things that you have specifically requested not to get. And you SHOULD be able to opt out of hair care items altogether. A lot of people don’t use any hair products. And I too feel like I’m on nail polish overload, receiving them from Julep AND in my last two Birchboxes. There are only so many times I can paint my nails 🙂

          • I agree with both of you. I checked that I “could never get enough” nail polish, skin care, and eye shadow products. These past 2 boxes, they have given me hair care products and tea, and 0 eye shadow products. If I didn’t check hair care products, why do they keep sending them to me? Can someone also please explain to me if I can avoid getting tea?

  39. I received the Hair Protector, the nail polish, sunscreen and a Smashbox mascara. Unfortunately, my Hair Protector broke and oil and glass covered everything in my box so in the trash the whole thing went.

    • My Juicy Couture broke and everything smells…strong!

      • Strong is the best word for it. I couldn’t nail out any more details than that.

    • You should contact BB–I’ve heard that they are really great about replacing boxes at no charge when an item breaks.

  40. I was a little bummed; I got the same perfume and hair oil, a eye cream (the best by far), a small lotion sample that didn’t even cover half of me, and bar soap, which is one of the first I have not had an allergic reaction to, but it was like the kind you get at a hotel. The box it came in weighed more than the contents…not exactly a good sign. My first really bleeh box though, so I’ll stay tuned for March. 🙂

  41. I also received the Pores No More and really was unenthused as my husband had received it in his box this month and it was a repeat! He also felt that it wasn’t a guy thing and was insulted that BB put it into a man box! : ). But I had tried it out then and it broke me out, so into the garbage it went, so this is a loss for me! I also received the agave oil and since I have pretty limp hair, oil is definitely out so another loss. Benefit cosmetics have cute saying and stuff but I guess they need something to hype them as their products are poor. Pretty much this box was a total loss for me so next month there will be no box as I am canceling.

    • I have bummer months too, but never enough to cancel. Even two bummers in a row….eventually the more than make up for it, with me anyway. Responding because I read almost exactly what you said at Paula’s Choice about benefit.
