What is Birchbox?

Birchbox is a New York City based online monthly beauty subscription box for both men and women. Each Birchbox includes 4-5 selected sample products for just $10 a box. A Birchbox subscription includes a monthly delivery of personalized products, an original editorial, and access to Birchbox’s online store.

Birchbox was founded in 2010 by Katia and Hayley when they envisioned an easier way for customers to purchase beauty products online. Today, Birchbox operates in the United States, United Kingdom, France, Spain and Belgium. Dedicated to helping women find the products they love, Birchbox also launched BirchboxMan in April 2012 to bring men custom grooming and lifestyle products.

Who founded Birchbox?

Hayley Barna and Katia Beauchamp first met at Harvard Business School and founded Birchbox during their last semester in 2010. They wanted to provide customers an easy way to navigate the wide array of beauty products available and discover new products in an exciting way. They found an opportunity in beauty e-commerce and started fleshing out value propositions and prototypes. In the early stages Katia and Hayley began by packing boxes themselves and shipping them out in post offices. They eventually started hiring their own employees and recruiting talent. In 2013, the founders won the Leadership Award at Forbes Women’s Summit and went on to open their first Birchbox store in 2014. By 2015, Birchbox had over one million subscribers and 300 employees

What does Birchbox mean?

BirchBox was one of the first names Hayley and Katia came up with. Birchbox was named with birch trees in mind. The founders loved how birch trees brought a sense of peace and beauty with its silvery bark imagery in every season. Birchbox was also gender neutral and a fun alliteration.
