My Dog Tried Nom Nom and Farmer’s Dog: Find Out Which One Won Their Heart and Belly

I’m the type of person who likes to know what’s in my food and to see quality ingredients that I can trust. You’ve heard the phrase “show me the money”? Well, I say, show me the real food!

So why would I want to feed my beautiful dog Paisley any differently?

For a long time, it wasn’t so easy to find wholesome pet foods that I could really trust. But fortunately, there are now companies that specialize in making healthy, tasty, nutritious foods for pets. Two of the most popular companies are Nom Nom and The Farmer’s Dog. But every dog has its own tastes, lifestyle, and dietary needs. So which one is right for your four-legged friend? Paisley definitely had a favorite.

Round 1: Versatility. Nom Nom wins!

Every dog is different, so it’s super important to have a subscription that can be adjusted to the needs of your pet — especially as, just like us, dogs can have serious allergies.

Before you sign up, Nom Nom asks if your dog has any health problems or known allergies. The survey also checks for other potential issues, so they can prep the right portions and recipes for your dog, based on the insights from their on-staff vet nutritionists.

Nom Nom meals are packed on-site in their own USA kitchens using fresh, whole ingredients that are individually cooked then mixed together, which is a difference you can see and your dog can taste. I love that with just a few orders, you can see the benefits of fresh food such as a shinier coat, better breath, smaller poops, and more energy. Nom Nom even offers a money-back guarantee if you don’t see benefits in 30 days.

You can choose between full or half portions with Nom Nom, or order bundles to feed just the right amount of fresh for your pet’s needs. I love that we can feed a little or a lot of fresh and still see many benefits.

Farmer’s Dog gathers information about known and potential health issues to help build a meal plan. They send packages of food without the option of choosing different portion sizes but do tell you how much to feed of what they send.

Round 2: Deliciousness. For Paisley, it's a win for Nom Nom.

Paisley isn’t a picky dog, but a varied diet is important for overall health. Visually, Nom Nom stands out with fresh, whole ingredients you can actually see and recognize, while Farmer’s Dog’s less than appetizing-looking mush doesn’t inspire as much confidence.

Of course, that’s me thinking about my dog. The best option for you is going to depend upon your dog’s specific needs. Both services have exciting options that use around six main ingredients: whole meats, healthy starches, and vegetables. Nom Nom and Farmer’s Dog also add vitamins and minerals for nutritional balance.

Paisley loves beef, so Nom Nom’s Beef Mash is perfect. With ground beef, russet potatoes, eggs, carrots, peas, and nutritional supplements, it’s both healthy and (for Paisley!) delicious. With 4 different recipes (Beef Mash, Chicken Cuisine, Pork Potluck, Turkey Fare), even the pickiest eater will find their favorite.

Round 3: Confidence. It’s a draw.

For me, it’s all about trust.

Nom Nom guarantees high-quality proteins and vegetables, all sourced from approved U.S. suppliers. Plus, Nom Nom’s recipes meet the guidelines of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), which is an association of local, state, and federal agencies. They also have veterinary nutritionists and even a microbiologist on staff.

Farmer’s Dog promises top-grade ingredients, sourced from reputable farmers that are purveyors of human foods that meet USDA standards. They also follow all AAFCO guidelines.

So, I feel confident in the quality and wholesomeness of both companies’ food.

Round 4: Price. Nom Nom wins!

It costs more for quality foods versus basic grocery store brands. But, given the overall health benefits that come from carefully selected and prepared ingredients, that could actually mean paying less for vet bills.

Subscriptions to Nom Nom and Farmer’s Dog start at about the same amount, just $2 a day (though that price will depend on the size of your dog and the amount of food they need). Nom Nom takes the guesswork out of feeding with convenient single packs portioned to your dog’s daily needs, so you save on potential food waste with overfeeding.

I love that because Paisley is a rescue, when you sign up for Nom Nom they donate $50 back to the rescue organization in your name. Now that’s money well spent!

The Ultimate Winner: Nom Nom

After facing off in four bouts, the winner is clear: Nom Nom takes home the prize. While both companies deliver foods that I can trust, Nom Nom ticks all the boxes for me … and has Paisley licking her lips!
