I Was Skeptical of Shampoo Bars – Here’s What Happened When I Tried One

If you know me, you know I always aspire to lead the most earth-friendly and sustainable lifestyle — whether that’s recycling or buying solely from clean brands. However, one thing I always found tough to “give up” was my hair care routine. I had spent years trying to perfect it and along that journey, I was using up a lot of plastic. I knew the answer was to make the switch to shampoo bars but I was skeptical: would I have to sacrifice healthy hair for the planet? Was my hair ever going to look as good? Cue: The Earthling Co.

The Earthling Co. is loved by many, from people with super curly hair to those with fine strands. I knew I would be doing the Earth a disservice if I at least didn’t give them a try. Here’s what happened when I did:

The look of my hair wasn’t sacrificed — it looked even better

One of the main things I was concerned about when making the switch from my trusty brand to The Earthling Co. was how good my hair was going to look.

Well, let me tell you, that was certainly not an issue. The Earthling Co. makes shampoo and conditioner bars for all types of hair: curly, textured, fine, colored, bleached, you name it. My highlights were intact after using the bar and my hair was even softer than before. On top of that, I was worried that my hair would get greasy quicker because I was rubbing a bar on my hair rather than a liquid, but my roots actually looked less oily than usual before my next shampoo.

More bang for your buck

If you’d think that using a bar of shampoo instead of liquid means you need to buy it more frequently, you’re wrong. One bar of shampoo and conditioner is the equivalent of two to three bottles of your favorite hair care products. In other words, it could last you anywhere between two to six months (depending on how often you wash your hair) or 50-75 washes. That’s anywhere between a month and a half, and two months and a half if you’re someone who washes their hair every day. The shampoo and conditioner set costs $32 and you get free shipping in the US on orders above $55 (plus subscriptions). They also have a 30-day moneyback guarantee policy if you are not happy with your purchase.

On top of that, if you subscribe to get deliveries anywhere between every month to every four months, you will be saving 20%, plus you get free shipping. A lot of hair care brands from the drugstore or luxury makeup stores don’t offer that.

Good for the environment

When you make the switch from shampoo bottles to bars, you are using less plastic that could end up in a landfill somewhere — or worse, in the ocean. Of course, the bar has to be wrapped in something during shipping, which is why The Earthling Co. opted to wrap their bars in 100% compostable packaging. Not only that, but all of the ingredients used in their products are completely clean and free of SLS parabens, fillers, preservatives, and silicones, which will make you less prone to having any allergic reactions. Additionally, you can pick whether your shampoo and conditioner bars have any scent — or none — and you don’t have to worry about any type of allergies because they are naturally derived, never artificial.

The Verdict

Despite my hesitation to make the switch from my usual shampoo and conditioner, I’m glad I gave The Earthling Co. a try because not only does my hair still look and smell good, but I’m helping the environment. Their products are made solely with clean ingredients, are cruelty-free, and are wrapped in compostable wrappers. You are also saving tons of money because one bar of shampoo can last you for several months, depending on how often you wash your hair. If you’ve been thinking about giving plastic-free hair care a try, this is your sign to do it.
