Our Favorite Roasters: The Coffee Subscriptions We Love Most
Here at MSA, one thing is certain: we love good coffee. Whether we’re ripping open newly-arrived subscription boxes, typing up reviews, posting on Instagram, or sharing our new favorite product discoveries, you’ll likely find us with a piping hot cup of coffee in hand. We’re an opinionated group, and we work remotely all across the country. It probably won’t come as a surprise to hear that we have lots of favorite local roasters nationwide. We’ve compiled a list of some of our top recommendations, and we’d love to hear yours, too! Read on to see what you’ll find brewing up in our homes, and we invite you to join the discussion and share your favorite coffee subscriptions in the comments section at the end of the post!
Partners Coffee Roasters
Quite a few of us are located in NYC, where cool coffee shops are abound. There’s no shortage of small, independent roasters, so we were surprised when one name popped up again and again: Partners Coffee. Founded in 2012 in Brooklyn under the name Toby’s Estate, the company rebranded in 2019, and Partners Coffee was born. Known for their colorful packaging, eye-catching design aesthetic, delicious cold brew, and small (but growing!) empire of NYC coffee shops, Partners has caught our attention for all the right reasons.
Luckily, you don’t have to live in The Big Apple to enjoy coffee from this MSA favorite; Partners ships nationwide. You can set up recurring shipments of your favorite beans or sample a new kind of coffee each shipment with the Roasters Choice Subscription. There are numerous grind options available (whole bean, drip coffee maker, Chemex, pour-over, French press, espresso etc.). Subscriptions start at $15.00 and include free shipping.
Congregation Coffee Roasters
Tucked away in a sleepy New Orleans neighborhood on the Westbank of the Mississippi River, Congregation Coffee is a small-batch roaster and genuine neighborhood gem. On any given weekend, you’re likely to find tourists and locals alike swinging by to grab a latte before strolling along the Algiers Point levee to take in views of Jackson Square and the French Quarter.
If you don’t want to travel all the way to New Orleans (or traverse The Mighty Mississippi), Congregation Coffee will come to you. Subscription options start at $15.00, and can you can set up deliveries at an interval of your choosing. (Sign up to receive fresh coffee every week or go for a monthly subscription- your choice!) Coffee is roasted every Tuesday and Thursday, and shipped fresh.
With trendy locations in LA, West Hollywood, and Chicago, Dayglow oozes California cool (think neon signs, sleek lines, and pastel hues). But this is a craft coffee company that backs up the style with substance; Dayglow ranks #2 on Food & Wine’s Best Coffee Shops in America: 2019. Full disclosure: Dayglow isn’t a roastery, but they curate a rotating selection of high-quality coffee from around the world that’s truly impressive. April’s featured roasters include Oslo’s Fuglen, Amsterdam’s Friedhat, and Dublin’s Cloud Picker.
Subscriptions start at $25.00 for one bag of coffee per month, and mostly international roasters are featured. U.S. subscribers enjoy free shipping on subscription coffees, as well as one-time orders placed in the online marketplace.
Queen City Collective Coffee Roasters
Queen City Collective Coffee was started by three brothers who spent years doing humanitarian work in Africa. While there, they developed an appreciation for the local community that stuck with them. After moving back home to Denver and making the decision to start a business, they vowed to build honest relationships all along the coffee supply chain. Sourcing is important to them, and coffees are selected with sustainability in mind.
Every month, Queen City picks a different fair trade, farm-to-cup coffee and sends it out to subscribers. (Expect to see mostly single-origin coffees featured.) Selections are roasted on the first Tuesday of the month and shipped out the following day. A single 12-ounce bag subscription costs $20.00, and serious coffee drinkers can increase the size of their order. Two bags ship for $32.00, three for $48.00, and four will run you $62.00.
Back in the Empire State, Gregorys Coffee is another roaster our team loves. Founded in 2006 by the bespectacled Gregory Zamfotis, the eponymous brand is known for eyeglass imagery, endless puns, and amazing coffee. (They see coffee differently. Get it?) In a city where it’s easy to feel anonymous, Gregorys is a place where customers are welcomed as part of the family. Regulars are even lovingly referred to as “Gregulars.”
Coffee club subscriptions start at $12.95 (+ shipping), and you can choose your shipping frequency and the type of coffee you’d like to receive. Coffee is always roasted fresh on the business day after you place your order, and it’ll be shipped out to you within two business days.
Tandem Coffee Roasters
If you find yourself way up north in Vacationland, make sure to check out Portland, Maine’s Tandem Coffee Roasters. There are two locations to choose from: the original shop is next door to Tandem’s roastery, and the second features a scratch bakery headed up by a recent James Beard nominee. (Both are easy to spot— just look for a sleek minimalist sculpture of tandem bicycle riders out front!)
Coffee lovers will have several subscriptions to choose from. The Single Origin CSA costs $25.99 and includes one pound of single-origin, whole bean coffee per delivery. If you’d rather try something a little different, consider The Good Thing, a subscription that sends both great coffee and a vinyl record. For $39.99 per month, you’ll receive a 12-oz bag of coffee and a 12″ record. Shipping is free on all subscriptions.
Kaldi’s Coffee has been roasting specialty coffee in St. Louis since 1994, and the company is named after the famous goatherder who helped bring coffee to the world. Here’s how Kaldi’s Coffee tells the story:
In 6th century Ethiopia, a goatherder named Kaldi stumbled upon his wandering flock as they sampled berries from nearby bushes. Ordinarily sluggish, his goats had an unusual amount of energy. After tasting several seeds himself, Kaldi discovered that the berries were the cause for the increased energy. It wasn’t long before coffee beans and their stimulating effect traveled far and wide.
Subscription plans start at $12.99 (plus $5.00 shipping) and include a 10% discount on the regular price of bags of coffee. You can choose your preferred grinder style (whole bean, drip, French press, fine) as well as how often you’d like to receive deliveries. Light roast coffee is Kaldi’s specialty, but decaf and dark roast options are also available. New coffee is roasted and shipped fresh every Tuesday.
It’s hard to talk about great roasting without giving Seattle a nod, and Onda Origins is one of our top picks from the Emerald City. You’ll find Onda’s beans all over town, but make sure to swing by the flagship shop and roastery the next time you’re in the Seward Park area.
Subscriptions are available and feature a rotating selection of beans. For $20 per shipment, you’ll receive a 12 oz. bag of coffee with free shipping, and your payments go directly towards supporting farmers. Every shipment helps ensure that Onda growers get paid 12x Fair Trade wages.
YES PLZ Coffee
YES PLS is based in Vernon, California, and they specialize in delivering high-quality coffee subscriptions. Every week, they roast up a new blend and mail it out to subscribers, and they’re confident you’ll love what they do. You can order a free 2 oz. sample of their beans online, no strings attached. Just pay $3 flat rate shipping.
Shipments start at $17, and you can set up deliveries on a schedule that works for you.
