What To Look For When Shopping Clothing Rental Subscriptions

When looking for a clothing rental subscription, you want to focus on a couple of things. First, you'll want to make sure you're getting the best possible deal that aligns with your needs and lifestyle. This means checking if they sell the brands you're interested in or want to try. The second thing is how are you finding your next pieces: are you choosing them from a library or are you working with a stylist? You want to also make sure you're getting shipments in the frequency that you want, they have your size, and cater to your lifestyle: whether you just need a new work wardrobe or just need a dress for a wedding.

The Most Popular Clothing Rental Subscription Boxes

Read on for our reader’s recommendations for the best clothing rental subscription boxes currently available. If we missed anything, drop us a comment. If you’ve tried one of these services, be sure to leave a quick review (even if you had a poor experience — your review can help other readers avoid subscription remorse).

1. Rent the Runway

The best clothing rental subscription overall

Check out our review of the Rent the Runway Unlimited service!

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

Rent the Runway offers different membership options, a 4 Item Plan (rent up to 4 items/month, $69 for your trial month, $89 per month thereafter), an 8 Item Plan (rent up to 8 items/month, 2 shipments of 4 items/month for $135 per month), and a 16 Item Plan (rent up to 16 items/month, 4 shipments of 4 items/month for $199 per month).

Their selection features high-end, designer dresses including everything from Diane Von Furstenberg cocktail dresses to Badgley Mischka gowns. Rent the Runway also has day-to-day essentials (think jackets, jeans, and blouses) from brands like JCrew, Levi’s, and BB Dakota. You’ll also find a selection of jewelry and accessories to finish your look.

Overall, Rent the Runway is a versatile and comprehensive clothing rental subscription service. By offering a variety of choices from well-known brands, the company gives you an affordable way to stay on top of trends, and their monthly plans are much more affordable than buying new designer clothes.

Who's This Box For?

Pros

  • Offers everything from everyday clothes to cocktail dresses
  • Has monthly plans depending on how many items you want to rent with the ability to upgrade to get even more items

"Rent the Runway makes dressing well so easy. I'm obsessed with all the mental space it's freed up for me — I don't have to worry about dry cleaning, shelling out money to try out new trends, or being more adventurous than usual with my wardrobe. It's made getting ready a bit more exciting than usual, especially after a year spent wearing t-shirts and sweatshirts. Plus, as things return to normal, I'm looking forward to trying more bags and accessories." - MC

2. Le Tote

The best subscription for trying trends

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

Le Tote lets you try a new set of separates, dresses, and more on a monthly basis. Keep the pieces as long as you’d like — once you return them, you’ll be eligible for a new set of items but the frequency depends on the membership you have. If you have an unlimited membership, you can get up to three totes in one month. We like that Le Tote features familiar fashion-forward brands like Calvin Klein, Free People, and Rachel Roy. They also offer maternity clothing options and accessories. Rent up to 10 clothing items and as many as 5 accessories per month.

Who's This Box For?

This is great for people who love to participate in the trends without committing to buying the actual pieces. Le Tote only carries sizes XS to XXL, or 0 to 16, so inventory might be a little limited.

Pros

  • Stays up to date on trends
  • Offers familiar brands
  • Also offers maternity clothes and accessories

Cons

  • People get to keep the pieces for as long as they want which means you might be waiting for something for a long time
  • Does not currently carry tall, petite, or plus-sizing

What Readers Say:

"I enjoy getting Le Tote...more than some of the others that never seemed to read my style profile. You are "renting" clothes and if you buy them then, of course, they're used but I've never had an issue with the quality of an item. I also enjoy that I can pick out my own selections. They do have limited quantities so sometimes what I want is not available but I've always found something else to try and sometimes it's out of my comfort zone, which is good!" - Amy R

"My first tote arrived, fast shipping... Everything looks great, fit is not perfect sizes run large. Look forward to the next one as they perfect my sizes..." - Daisy Barrera

Shipping: They offer free shipping both ways. All totes are sent to members using 2-3 day priority shipping and ground shipping when being returned to their warehouse.

Starting at $79.00

3. nuuly by Urban Outfitters

The best subscription for chic clothing and style explorers

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

nuuly is a fashion rental subscription from URBN, the company behind brands like Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People. By now, you know the drill: nuuly lets members rent 6 pieces at a time from URBN’s entire family of brands (along with 100s of other brands available on the site including Agolde, Levi’s, and more) on a monthly basis. Return your rentals by your monthly return date, and they’ll send you a new set of pieces to try.

It’s a great pick if you’re into URBN’s unique taste in workwear, denim, and party dresses, and it’s an even better choice if you love vintage pieces like robes, jackets, and band tees. We love that nuuly lists retail value right on their site, so you’ll know exactly what you’re getting into if you decide to keep something. This clothing rental subscription also has plenty of plus-size clothes, and their “Lookbooks" provide some inspiration if you’re stuck in a fashion rut.

Who's This Box For?

Honestly, this box is for people who love the style from Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People. Or for the people who have always wanted to buy from these stores but felt like it was too expensive or was not accessible to them. They also carry plus sizes, so everyone is welcome to rent!

Pros

  • Lists prices on-site if you ever want to buy them
  • Offer plus-sized clothing

Cons

  • Is limited to Urban Outfitters, Anthropologie, and Free People
  • Pretty pricey for clothes you can buy in-store

What Readers Say:

"Love this subscription. Selection is large. URBN stores carry a wide selection of on-trend brands. If the rental reviews/details don't help, can usually find items on the store sites for more information and measurements. Shipping is very fast for both directions - I usually take packages to the UPS store on Monday morning and I'm able to choose new items that same evening, a new shipment arrives on Thursday. Clothes are clean and in good condition, CS can resolve damage reports. I really like the reusable garment case for the shipment. For the $100 subscription can get $500-$1000+ clothing each month. That's a great value. Really great way to rotate seasonal, very trendy items through wardrobe. Variety of work-friendly and casual clothing." - Ruchee Patel

Shipping: nuuly ship all orders via UPS to customers within the United States. They are not able to ship to PO Boxes or APO/FPO addresses, to US territories, or anywhere outside of the United States.

4. Armoire

The best subscription for those who care about giving back

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

Armoire pairs the guidance of a personal styling service with the rental subscription model. Share your sizing and preferences via a simple quiz, and Armoire will share 75 recommendations that they think will fit your needs--including 'Top 5 Recommendations' that best reflect your fit and style preferences. You can swap out pieces before they ship. Your stylist will select 4 “looks" and send them to you. Keep them as long as you’d like, buy pieces you’ve grown attached to, or return your items for free to get something new. We like that they offer sizes 0-16W as well as maternity clothes. The brand is also dedicated to women's empowerment.

Who's This Box For?

This one is mainly for the people who don't have the time to browse through a website or who want the help of a stylist to step out of their comfort zone. But if you don't want the help of a stylist, don't let that deter you.

Pros

  • You can choose whether you use the help of a stylist or you do it yourself
  • Offers plus-sized items and maternity clothing

Cons

  • It might take some trial and error for your stylist to match your style

What Readers Say:

"OMG I love Armoire. I've tried other similar services but always felt bored with the clothes. Armoire has amazing items, high quality, and interesting pieces that make my wardrobe pop. I get compliments every time I wear an Armoire piece. I love the personalized styling service and the ease of swapping clothes." - Kiley Bijlani

5. Rocksbox

The best subscription for jewelry and accessory rentals

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

Rocksbox is a jewelry rental service that allows you to accessorize without spending hundreds of dollars on pieces that you’ll never wear again.

When you sign up, you’ll add bracelets, earrings, rings, and necklaces from designers like Alex and Ani, Gorjana, and Kate Spade to your wishlist. Rocksbox will send you a set of three pieces including at least one of your Wishlist looks. Swap them for something new whenever you’d like; keep the pieces you love for a discounted price.

Given the low price, Rocksbox offers a fantastic value. Each box contains high-quality accessories, and the site lists the price of each piece — if you decide to purchase, you’ll know exactly what you’re paying.

Who's This Box For?

This box is great for people who would love to spruce up their jewelry drawer without spending hundreds of dollars each time.

Pros

  • Offers many brands to choose from
  • You can keep the pieces for a discounted price

Cons

  • Some things from your wishlist may be out of stock for some time

What Readers Say:

"One of my favorite services. Been using them for over 3 years." - Jennipher Shannon

"I love Rocksbox. I've used their service for a few years now. This is very nice jewelry and I get to wear it for a while, get bored of it, and send it back. It's also nice to have a statement piece or holiday piece here and there (just got some candy cane earrings for Christmas) that I would never normally purchase but are fun to wear for a time. The jewelry is name-brand and quality (I've never gotten anything that irritated my skin or turned green, not ever). They have brands that are more reasonably priced than others ($$$ Kate Spade, $ Sophie Harper). They also have the option to put your subscription on hold which I do at times when I don't have a lot of events coming up or things to do. And if you love a piece you can buy and keep it. After wearing something for a couple weeks and not wanting to part with it - I know then I really do love it (not just an impulse buy that I never look at again) and will continue to wear it." - Emily Jordan

Shipping: Ships free both ways to the United States and territories.

The best subscription for a range of style options

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

New York & Company Closet lets you rent 3 pieces at a time from a selection of New York & Company-brand dresses, separates, denim, and workwear. The price is great — it’s on the lower end compared with other unlimited clothing rental subscriptions — and the styles range from casual tees and shorts to floral print dresses and sleek jumpsuits.

Like other services on this list, New York & Company has you add your favorite items to your virtual “Closet,” and then they pick which 3 of those pieces you end up with. The site recommends keeping at least 20 items in your closet (and given the variety here, that’s not especially difficult).

7. Taelor

The best sustainability subscription for men who want to look good without buying clothes

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

This clothing rental service offers up to 8 pieces of high-quality men's clothing items per month (2 subscription boxes per month, 4 pieces per box) from 200+ brands. It’s like “Rent The Runway for Men” or “Nuuly for Men”.

Taelor is a personal styling service — they’ll collect your sizing and style information from your style quiz or one-on-one consultation calls, then you can provide feedback to the curated collection from 200 brands, picked by your stylist. From there, you can wear up to 8 department-store quality clothes for weeks per month without buying them.

As with traditional personal styling services, this box is a great way to try out new trends or brands. However, unlike traditional services, you can wear what you get and decide whether it’s right for you — for weeks. Other personal styling services expect pieces to be tried on and sent back, not worn out and about.

If you find something you really like, you can keep it for a discounted price.

Who's This Box For?

This is a box perfect for men who need a little help deciphering their style. We like the range of comfortable to crisp and classy separates we’ve seen from Taelor. It’s a great hybrid model that combines the surprise of a subscription box with the convenience of clothing rental. It’s also a great way to reduce clutter.

Taelor only carries sizes S through XL but plans to open to other sizes later this year.

Pros

  • They expect you to love your pieces, wearing them countless times for weeks
  • Rotating wardrobe without having to decide what to buy or having clutter at home
  • No more shopping or laundry
  • Support sustainability with circular fashion
  • Buy with a deep discount

Cons

  • Rental may not be for people who just love to own something

What Readers Say:

"This is my third box and I love it!! They send you amazing designer brands and great pieces that fit your style profile. I usually end up buying all my pieces and hoarding them in my closet. I'm pretty addicted to it, but it can get costly, but worth it for designer pieces that you can't normally get or want to buy at such a high cost." - T

8. Haverdash

The best subscription for plenty of variety

What’s In This Clothing Rental Subscription Box

Haverdash offers a wide range of department-store-quality separates, dresses, and more with trend-conscious cuts and patterns. We like that they have a mix of hip designs (ruffled jumpsuits, kick-flare jeans, and reimagined retro patterns) and more traditional go-to items (solid-color T-shirt dresses, office-appropriate blouses, and versatile skinny jeans).

As with many of the other programs on this list, Haverdash has members add their favorite looks to their online “Closet.” They’ll send out three items from that list at a time — wear them as long as you’d like, then swap them out for a new set. Use the “prioritize" feature for a certain item, and the company will try to make sure you get it in your next box.

Who's This Box For?

Haverdash offers incredible variety, so if you feel like you haven’t upgraded your look in years, this is a great service for finding something new. Their site also has a “featured" section with several collections to help you find inspiration. We recommend checking out the Member Favorites. Additionally, Haverdash only carries sizes XS-XL.

Pros

  • Good mix of trendy pieces and traditional ones
  • Sends out pieces from your closet options

Cons

  • Department-store quality
  • Only sends three pieces at a time

What Readers Say:

"I love Haverdash. I always have something to wear and their "return notify" feature totally cuts down on wait time between boxes. I'll never shop again (unless I buy something from my box... which I'll admit, I have done! The dress was too cute to return.)" - MSA user

How to Get The Most Out of Your Clothing Rental Subscription Once You’ve Picked

Once you’ve picked out the right box for you, follow our steps to help make sure you make the most of your new subscription.

  • The first thing you'll want to do is make sure that the clothes you're renting are things you're actually going to wear and possibly even buy. The point about clothing rental subscription boxes is wearing something you might like but haven't necessarily had the chance or the courage. The great thing is if you don't like it, you can simply return it.
  • In order to do this, be as honest and clear when either taking quizzes that could help stylists narrow down choices for you or providing them with feedback when you love something and when you don't. This not only makes their work easier and it makes you happy in the end.
  • If there are no stylists, you can favorite items you love to make sure you can always find them or rent them again or create wishlists of pieces that have caught your eye. You might not need them at the moment but if a holiday party comes up, you might get to use that dress you saw after all.
  • You'll want to make sure about is that you're getting the number of items or outfits you actually want and need.

Factors We Considered When Reviewing These Clothing Rental Subscriptions

This list features our fellow subscription fanatics’ top choices, and we can confidently recommend the subscriptions above since we’ve researched and reviewed them all. Factors we considered when reviewing these subscriptions include:

  • Sizes: did these boxes have limited sizing or could anyone – even pregnant women – rent clothes from them?
  • Designers and brands: are you paying a hefty amount each month to rent designer items or department-store pieces (not like there's anything wrong with it?)
  • Occasion: do these boxes cater to every event that could show up in our calendar, like a wedding or a job interview?

Have you seen RTR’s Better Business Bureau rating? They have dozens of complaints and 1/5 reviews… and an overall BBB rating of D-. I can’t take a list that encourages people to try them seriously. Sorry.

Did MyList @ Bloomingdales go under? I tried them for awhile and it was comparable to Armoire. I was trying to go back but their site isn’t working. I still love RTR. I’ve tried: Armoire, RTR, BRStylePassport, Infinity Loft, Nuuly, Haverdash and Le Tote. I don’t like when they choose what to send you from your “closeted” items. How are they to know your weather in the area? Events going on this week? This is why I’ve stayed with RTR Unlimited for over a year. I’ve also stayed with Nuuly because of this but their styles are getting tired.

I spend a fair amount of time thinking about what I’m going to wear and what clothes I want to buy, but I wouldn’t call my style “classy.” Thanks for the advice about sticking with my style and instead find ways to class it up. Great article – I love Rent the Runway! But, I wish we could also learn more about the cultural rental options available in the US. I’ve recently been looking for rental options for Indian fashion, and it’s been a challenge to figure out what’s best. I came across LUKH at lukshtudio.com and a few others, but would love to learn more about what’s out there.

I have used Gwynnie Bee, Loft Unlimited, Le Tote and Armoire. There are things to like about all of them. I cancelled Gwynnie Bee first, as I did not like having to wait for them to receive a return before they would start processing the next shipment. Also, while you closet items, you have no swap options. Loft also had no swap options, and often did not have items in my size to closet. Le Tote had some great items, and some less expensive items. I liked the swap feature and that they always started a new box as soon as they received the return notification. Armoire seemed to have the highest quality items of the bunch, some choice in the item selection, and nice customer service. The items were in great condition or new with tags, and turn around time was quick.

I’ve now tried Rent the Runway, Le Tote, and Armoire.

Rent the Runway is great for events/special occasions. Very trendy styles that I wouldn’t want to invest in for one season. The app is great — very easy to use and navigate, however it took me a while to select my items due to the endless scroll factor. The shipping was slow (I’m on the west coast) and the clothes came in individual plastic bags which seemed like a waste. I ended up cancelling because it didn’t seem worth the price for the slow shipping.

Signing up for Le Tote was very odd. The packages were confusing and so was the sign up process. When I finally got access to view my styles, the retail prices were really cheap (around $60). The clothes fit well, but I had a really hard time finding 4 options I loved. I’m going to end up cancelling because I feel I could get the same value at an H&M which is what I’m trying to avoid!

Armoire is by far my favorite of the 3. The clothes were great (I even had a few pieces with tags on them!), everything fit, shipping was super speedy, and customer service was super friendly and helpful. I love that the membership includes help from a stylist. I really like the variety of clothing Armoire offers. I was able to select items for work, weekend, and a wedding. I also like supporting a small women-owned business!

I’ve tried Le Tote and currently use both RTR and Armoire. They both offer great designer items. I often get new items from Armoire and the the customer service is great. RTR has sent me a few items that have either been stained or really worn – but mostly the items are pretty nice.

Le Tote sent me items that I could purchase for $9 (bracelet) $37 (handbag) and $24 (dress). I cancelled since the items were really cheap and low end, plus the purchase price was basically lower than renting the items. The accessories are really low quality and I couldn’t find clothing items I wanted to wear and didn’t recognize most of the brands.

The Ann Taylor coupon takes you to le tote and don’t see any option to enter the code manually ;(

I’ve tried Le Tote a few times. FYI-one time, there was shirt I was interested in purchasing. The Le Tote cost was $72. Went to the brand website and was directed from there to Amazon where it was $30 plus a 60% off coupon….$12!!! So glad I checked.

Interesting to see all the different options, but I can never get onboard with clothing rentals. I would live in fear of staining an item or washing something the wrong way and ruining it.

I am a frequent rent the runway user and have stained items and lost buttons occasionally with no issues.

Great article Anna! I’ve only tried Express and Ann Taylor so far. I cancelled Express because they added too many new members without increasing their inventory so there was never any options available in my size (M 8-10).
I’ve had Ann Taylor for 2 months now and I really like it. They ship new items really fast so I’ve been trying 12-15 items each month. I also like the option of keeping the items I like and buying them at 70-80% off

Do:

Armoire

give you a stylist to work with? That is always one of my issues, putting things together that would look great but that is not my gift.

I tried it and love it! I’m in the process of losing a lot of baby weight and don’t want to keep buying new clothes. Infinitely Loft is my new go to. The shipping was fast to receive. I haven’t sent it back yet because I love what came.
