Hygge Subscription Box Review, June 2024

Hygge Box is a monthly subscription box that embraces the Danish concept of hygge, or a lifestyle of coziness and happiness. (The pronunciation is hoo-gah.) It is about preserving happiness everyday by slowing down, being humble, expressing gratitude, feeling safe, and connecting with loved ones. From this box you can expect a selection of handpicked items from around the world that promote this gentle, feel-good sentiment — 4-5 items for Standard box subscribers and 5-6 for Deluxe box subscribers.

This is a review of the Deluxe Hygge Box.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Opening the Box

The Hygge Box arrives in a peach box with sweet illustrations on it. Information about the subscription printed under the box lid, as well as the month's curation packed carefully in a sticker-punctuated wrapping of tissue paper.

The card gives an intro to the month and details about each product listed on the back. June's box invites mindfulness as we embrace moments of sunlit quiet and intentionality in the wonderful warmth. Let's dig in!

What's Inside the June 2024 Hygge Box

Valkyrie Candles Fresh Lilac Soy Candle Tin, 4 oz - Retail Value $8.50

A small delight of signing up for a subscription box long-term is learning the small businesses with which they have relationships. This is my fourth month with Hygge Box, and my second Valkyrie Candle tin. March's was a fresh-cut grass scent, and remarkably accurate. For this summery box we're sent fresh lilac, and honestly, it smells just like walking past a lilac bush. Which is one of my favorite summer hygge experiences, and you'd better believe I determine my dog walking route to make sure I can smell the most lilacs possible. I love bringing it in the home.

Raaka Vanilla Waffle Cone Dark Chocolate Bar - Buy a box of 4 for $16

I'm familiar with Raaka through a former chocolate subscription box (it's long since closed, but it lives rent-free in my mind)—and as a brand, I love their approach, which is to say: they use only traceable, high quality, and transparently traded single origin cacao. I admit some of their creative flavors like Rose Cardamom and Green Tea Crunch reach beyond what my palette craves and enjoys, but this...this is squarely in my mouthwatering zone. The nearly caramelized crunch of the waffle cone, the berry-hinted dark chocolate, and the quality are all so amazing. It's so decadent, and I wanted this bar never to end.

Big Heart Tea Happy Rooibos Tea, 2 pack - Retail Value $3.50

Our drinkable item of the month is this sweet duo of rooibos tea. It's a naturally sweet, nutty, and caffeine-free tea, and you can decide whether you want to have tea for two with someone you care about or enjoy both for yourself.

Danica Studio Burrow Midi Mug, 11 oz - Retail Value $12.50

Truthfully, this June box contains one heartwarming offering after another, but this midi-size mug printed with colorblock homes has won me over in a special way. I've always appreciated smallish mugs, and the mug shelf in our cupboard is all mismatched anyway, so this is a new special one to join my other favorites. I've been enjoying coffee out of it every morning since it arrived.

Rokr Lilac Wooden Bloom Craft - Retail Value $4.99

Oh my goodness! I've never seen anything like this! Do you share the notion that nothing is more peaceful than cozying up with a puzzle? This one is a 3D build with laser cut wooden pieces that fit together to make a potted lilac plant you can display or gift.

Puzzling has an extra layer of magic for me, because my mum always has a large puzzle in progress in a quiet corner of my parents' home, and every time I visit I can see that she's chipped away at it throughout the week. I appreciate the quiet moments I get to spend with it when I'm there, too. Given that my mum has the space and the habit formed, this 3D puzzle simply had to go to her. She's so excited to get it started!

Earth Harbor Ahoy Love Milky Cleanser, 60 mL - Retail Value $19

For all the skincare items that subscription boxes send, I don't see cleansers often. I wish they were more common. This one is an extra treat, because it comes from a beloved skincare company that's plant-based and planet-positive. I love the creamy, milky texture of this cleanser, and I especially enjoy the cooling element. Earth Harbor says of this cleanser: "The milky lather comfortably removes impurities while bestowing bouncy, glowy skin with Super Seaweed Complex + Botanic AHAs, Antioxidants & Lipids."

Danica Anthropologie Ombré Embroidered Produce Bags - Retail Value $20

The extra item for deluxe subscribers this month is this duo of 100% cotton produce bags. They're ombre dip-dyed in peach and blue, and embroidered with cute catchphrases. On top of being a more sustainble option for produce protection than plastic, these drawstring bags encapsulate the hygge concept of walking to the local market, buying some produce with these zero-waste bags, and returning home to eat something nourishing. I absolutely love that the tare weight is printed on each bag.

Verdict

I've had this sentiment brewing in the background, but this month I can say for sure that the Hygge Box is my favorite box I receive each month. Its contents are so caringly curated, the concept of hygge is definitely captured, and the products aren't the same old stuff you see in every subscription. Every single item has found its purposeful place in my home (or belly!), which is the sign of a good box and a good fit.

To Wrap Up

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Kind of. As an individual box it is still available in the shop at the time of publication. As a subscription, if you order by the last day of the month, your first box will be the next box, and your order will ship between the 15th-18th of the following month (unless sold out). Subsequent monthly boxes will also ship between the 15th and 18th.

Value Breakdown: The Hygge Deluxe box costs $52 per month with annual subscription. Deluxe subscribers received 7 items this month. That breaks down to $7.43 per item. The total retail value inside the Deluxe box is $72.49, which was calculating used a prorated cost for the single sugar cone chocolate bar. Standard subscribers were sent 6 items that total of about $52.49 in retail value. That is a lower value than I've seen in past months, but I don't mind at all since the selections were intentional, purposeful, and unique.

The Cost: $52 per month with annual subscription. Monthly, 3-month, and 6-month subscriptions also available.

Hi there, I'm Christen. I am all sorts of things:

🌳 a writer who loves to convey feeling

🌲 a mother who wants to have just as much fun as my kids do

🌳 an outdoors-lover who prioritizes spending time outside with my family

🌲 a low-maintenance self-carer

🌳 a general hungry person with an unstoppable sweet tooth

You'll find me collecting stationery and squirreling away stickers, riding bikes and swimming with my family, creating outfits in colors and silhouettes that make me feel amazing, wearing big earrings, drinking beer and asking my husband to feed me harmonies to sing, taking my vitamins, living for dancing to live music, roping everyone into a craft, being human and vulnerable, and celebrating the phenomenon of being alive.

...and doing it all with energy, delight, and jokes along the way.

Great review. I love the smell of lilac if it smells like the real thing. My mother had many large bushes of special double french lilacs in the yard
I used to cut them and put them in a vase by my bed. I swear it made me sleep.better.
