One of my choices for this month was very strategic—I needed to pull together a last minute 80s costume! And I'm still stuck in my 90s hoop obsession.

Rocksbox is a jewelry styling and rental service. Members pay a flat rate every month to get unlimited access to the Rocksbox collection and the option to buy whatever they love at a discounted price. Each month, Rocksbox will curate sets of three pieces to send your way, including at least one piece from your ever-growing wishlist. Members can keep and wear the three pieces they receive for as long as they want, or they can switch out sets whenever they'd like. Rocksbox also offers a monthly credit so you can buy the pieces for less.

Concerned about cleanliness? Each piece is sterilized with alcohol jewelry cleaner using medical grade products and handled with jewelry experts wearing gloves.

This is a review of the monthly plan for $21, which includes shipping to the US only.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Just like other subscription boxes, when I signed up for Rocksbox I had to set up a style profile that asked me questions like my metal preference, and which necklace, earring, bracelet, and ring styles I liked the most.

Let's check out this month's delivery!

What I Received

Cocoacentric Nami Large Flat Hoops - Retail Value $88, Member Price $88

About this item: This not-so-basic hoop with vintage appeal is crafted in a high-polish shine, these gold-tone hoops are flat and downright fabulous. Featuring 14k gold plating over stainless steel, these oversized earrings measure at 2.5" and they weigh in on the heavier side.

Condition: Like new.

Review: I'm still stuck in the 90s with my oversized hoops obsession, and I really loved this design of these flat hoops. I wore them probably two dozen times!

Kendra Scott Merritt Hoops - Retail Price $65, Member Price $65

About this item: Featuring Kendra Scott's signature hoofprint detail, these dual-tone hoops in mixed metal are made of 14k gold and rhodium over brass. Measuring at 1" in diameter, they're medium weight and come in a timeless design.

Condition: Brand new with tags.

Review: Pretty and very well-made, but reminded me too much of earrings I would've worn in high school.

Machete Neon Form Hoops - Retail Value $78, Member Price $78

About this item: Crafted in Italian acetate, these neon-hued hoops make a big 80s statement. Featuring a surgical steel post, they're medium weight and measure at 2.5" in length.

Condition: Like new.

Review: They worked out perfectly for the party but couldn't get any wear otherwise. The color is really fun, and they're very well made! I will be ordering more pieces by Machete.

The Verdict

The Machete hoops were a lifesaver for my 80s look, but I didn't get much wear otherwise due to the loud neon color. I also got a ton of wear out of the Cocoacentric hoops, but due to the open loop, they kept twisting and getting stuck in my hair. I keep ordering many of the same brands because I still think they're the only ones that are worth trying. I've discovered many others feel too much like they came from Claire's Boutique!

Value Breakdown: Rocksbox membership costs $21 per month. At retail, the three pieces would cost me $231. With my Rocksbox discounts and the member pricing including the buy-all-three-items $10 discount, the $21 of Shine Credit (the membership fee for the month, which goes towards your purchases), and my Rose Gold Rewards discount of $11.55, the total price for the two remaining items goes down to $188.45 which isn't best price.

Weird, so the $10 Forever Credit seems to have disappeared. Is this due to the recession? I've seen so many benefits disappear in many different places in the past few months!

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Every box is different and packed based on the customer's tastes and what's available at the time. You can, however, help guide the Rocksbox stylists and add your favorite pieces to your wishlist!

If shopping were an Olympic sport, I’d be a gold medalist. And while my bank account often feels the crunch, I just can’t stop buying secondhand clothing and accessories, under-the-radar designer goods, stuffed animal unicorns (I have about 75), and toys for my pet bunny rabbit. After 20 years of city slicking in NYC and DC, I now have a car and love to tour the Virginia countryside looking for vintage shops, undiscovered wineries and breweries, historic sites, and Thai restaurants—I’m addicted to Thai food. I never leave home without a spare phone charger because I love horror movies and therefore have an irrational fear of being stranded somewhere with a dead battery.
