Add to Cart is a reader-interest series that breaks down products and launches in beauty and skincare from your wish list. Has something caught your eye and preoccupied your desires? What products are you curious to learn more about? Let us know what's living on your wish list in the comments - each month, we'll select, buy, and review one product to see if it lives up to the hype!

Welcome to another round of Add to Cart! This month's product was one my mom called and begged me to try. A little background: my sweet mom is OBSESSED with Bum Bum Cream. Every single time I have a tub of it in my collection, I either gift it to her or it magically disappears after a visit. If your mother is anything like mine, she has spent her entire life taking care of everyone else. I can't remember my mom ever splurging on beauty products for herself when I was growing up. It was always the least expensive beauty she could find. All of her extra money went to making sure I had cute clothes for school or extra money for family trips. So when she fell in love with Sol de Janeiro, I was thrilled. Mother's Day is the same week as her birthday, and Bum Bum Cream is always wrapped up just for her. When she saw the brand launched a body oil, she was thrilled. But, in typical mom-form, she balked at the price. Luckily for her, I knew this new launch would be one that many people were curious about. So....

The Product My Mom Chose:

Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Firmeza Firming & Debloating Body Oil - $52

My Subscription Addiction paid for this product. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes).

The Packaging

A $52 bottle of body oil should feel special. And this one does. The glass bottle has a nice weight to it and there is a white silicone base to prevent slippage. I was especially impressed that the bottle came capped with a rounded white dome cap that prevents leakage. Also inside is a white pump for when you are ready to use your new fancy body oil. Simply replace the cap with the pump and you are ready to go! Keep the cap on hand for travel. The 3.4 fl oz should last quite a while and I am thrilled for the price that the size feels substantial.

The Formula

If you are a fan of that cult-favorite, sexy smell of Bum Bum Cream, get ready to celebrate. This body oil features the same intoxicating scent. Imagine warm summer skin, pistachios and salted caramel, vanilla, cream, and sunscreen. It is delicious, unforgettable, and hugely popular. You could argue this body oil is more affordable than the EDP and packs nearly as much perfume power with the added benefit of moisturized skin.

Ingredient-wise, there are some interesting things to note. Much like the cream version of this fragrant delight, there is Sol de Janeiro's trademarked Guaraná Caffeine+ Complex that firms and tightens skin. There is also microalgae which is here to debloat (more on that in a sec) sunflower seed oil, olive oil, along with jojoba, coconut, and acai. Here is a full look at the ingredient list:

Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil, Macadamia Integrifolia Seed Oil, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Parfum (Fragrance), Squalane, Paullinia Cupana (Guarana) Fruit Extract, Ptychopetalum Olacoides (Muirapuama) Bark/Root Extract, Plinia Cauliflora (Jabuticaba) Fruit Extract, Plankton Extract, Euterpe Oleracea (Acai) Fruit Oil, Amaranthus Caudatus Seed Extract, Triticum Vulgare (Wheat) Germ Extract, Hordeum Distichon (Barley) Extract, Tocopherol, Ethylhexylglycerin, Benzyl Alcohol, Benzyl Salicylate, Coumarin, Hydroxycitronellal, Limonene, Linalool, Benzyl Benzoate, Citral, Eugenol.

The Performance

As far as moisturizing power, this oil is great. A few pumps and my skin is glowing and so soft. It takes some massage to fully absorb, but, hey, you should be taking your time with such a luxury. The advertising for this oil is heavy on the "debloating" promises and even mentions of lymphatic drainage can be seen if you read through all of the details. I have some thoughts on this. Firstly, lymphatic drainage massage is pretty complex and can be done with or without this or any other body oil. I am not here to dissuade you from massaging your body but know that you don't need any certain magic oil to do so and that actual lymphatic drainage is often best left to trained massage therapists. I personally didn't notice any debloating but I did notice that my skin felt tighter when it was properly moisturized and given a little extra attention. If you are expecting to use this oil and shrink your waistline, I would caution you to just enjoy it for what it is: a great body oil that smells fantastic and makes your skin beautifully radiant. And, honestly, that is enough.

My Takeaway

Though the promises of this oil can seem quite... dramatic, I really loved this stuff. Is it expensive? Yeah. But there are certainly worse ways to spend $52 and if you have ever considered buying the $78 perfume version of this scent, consider this a great way to save some $$$ while still getting an outrageous sillage with the added benefit of happy skin.

And, yes, I will be buying my mom her own bottle.

Should You Buy the Sol de Janeiro Bum Bum Firmeza Firming & Debloating Body Oil?

This oil is a yes if:

Skip it if:

  • You prefer an unscented or lightly scented body oil.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I love the original Bum Bum Cream and scent and this oil is SO good, too. I’ve never noticed any tightening with the cream and don’t expect any from this oil, either, but as you said in the review, it’s a great luxury item to treat yourself to.

Thank you for reviewing this! I was really curious about it. I am wondering if it could be added to the bath as a bath oil?
