Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Our box looked a little different this month and it came with two recipes instead of three. The theme was Warm & Wonderful.

What's Inside a Yummy Crate?

Instead of a separate envelope with all of the materials inside, this box had a page with the shopping list and collectible sticker. It looks like they did away with the grown-up guide, but there was a little more emphasis on our cooking tool which was nice. While I don't mind this format, I prefer the previous style because the envelopes with the recipes fit so nicely on our cookbook shelf and were easy to locate!

Cooking Tool

This month we received these cute kid-sized oven mitts. My daughter loves that she has her own set now!

Yummy Zine

Our Yummy Zine always has a great mix of educational information and food-related fun. This month we learned all about heat transfer.

Experiment: Marshmallow Munch Test

Our experiment this month involved comparing different preparations of marshmallows and they supplied some toothpicks for us.

Activity: Make & Bake a Clay Trivet

Our activity was to make a clay trivet and they provided three different colors of clay and some clay tools for us.

My daughter really enjoyed making these and as you can see, they turned out pretty great! The idea is that you use all three small trivet pieces together to make a larger trivet for your hot pans!

The Recipes: Warm & Wonderful

We received two colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. There was a recipe for roasted sausage and veggies as well as one for S'more Sundaes. Yum!

Here is a closer look at our S'more Sundae recipe. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. I think the way they break it down is great for kids.

S'more Sundaes

Of course, we had to make the sundaes! My daughter was eager to crush up the graham crackers for our sundae cup. Then we formed the crumbs into little bowls, topped them with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and some halved marshmallows before putting them in the freezer to set for an hour.

Once they were done, we popped the cups in the broiler and melted some chocolate chips on the stovetop. Here they are right out of the oven with some delicious chocolate sauce on top!

Here's a closer look at our treats! These were seriously delicious! So simple to make and if you were to buy the pre-made little pie crusts, they would be a fun summer treat for a get-together. We will most definitely be making these again!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping

We always have so much fun with this box and we get some delicious treats out of it, too! While they don't provide the ingredients, I still feel like we get a great value because we get a cooking tool, reusable recipe cards, and materials for activities and experiments, too!

Key Takeaways

My daughter loves this box and this month she was thrilled to receive her own kid-sized oven mitts to use! I was pretty happy with how delicious our sundaes were and both of us love how her clay trivet turned out. Overall a great box, even though I'm not sure how I feel about the redesign and one less recipe!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It is possible you might get this crate, but it is not a guarantee. From KiwiCo:

Crates are assigned each month based on availability and your crate history - not all subscribers receive the same theme each month.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Getting kids interested in cooking and baking is priceless. An absolute critical skill, really glad kiwico introduced these new box kits to cultivate different skills for kids.
