First Impressions is a series that introduces and reviews new brands to My Subscription Addiction, drawing from readers' requests for an insider's first look. Interested in seeing more reviews from this brand, or have another box in mind that you'd like to see reviewed? Let us know in the comments.

Those who consider themselves to be connoisseurs of bubble baths, bath bombs, relaxation, and self-care have all heard of Lush Cosmetics- they invented the bath bomb, after all. Since 1995, Lush has been fighting against animal testing in the cosmetics industry while working on creating bath and body products with minimal packaging, using ethically-sourced ingredients. They've had a subscription box available in the UK for the past few years, but getting it shipped to the United States was quite expensive. Luckily, Lush has finally brought their Lush Kitchen subscription box to the US, and October is the first ever month they've offered directly to US-based subscribers.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.

First Impressions

This subscription box comes packaged in a green box with "Lush Kitchen" printed repeatedly on the box with a large fragile sticker.

When you open the box up, you'll notice things look a little dusty. The bath bomb, bubble bar, and shower steamer were packaged with the packaging peanuts, but they had no plastic wrapping around them, which means some of the edges got a little crumbly during transit.

The box comes with a fun pink and green info sheet with a scannable QR code for more information about the box, and the back of the info sheet is printed with a design. You also receive a packing slip with the ingredients for each product and their weight listed.

Lush Kitchen October 2022 Subscription Box Review

Cobweb Bath Bomb, 4.2 oz

I absolutely and truly adore Lush bath bombs, so being able to review one felt like an absolute treat. If the Cobweb bath bomb was a mainstay product rather than a box-exclusive item, though, I wouldn’t repurchase it. One of the reasons I love Lush bath bombs is because of the vibrant streams of color they produce, and this one created some bubbles but didn’t add any distinct color to my bath water other than to make it a little cloudy- there was no hidden color inside. It did make my water sparkle, and it fizzed and bubbled quite a bit more than I was expecting it to. I wonder if Lush purposefully did not make an intense bath bomb for their first box because they didn’t want to scare away those who don’t like bath bombs because of the mess- no mess here! Scent-wise, the most prominent notes I picked up were chamomile and lavender, and it was a relaxing, lovely smell mixed with the heat from the bath water.

Banana Ghost Shower Bomb, 2.6 oz

I like the taste of banana-flavored things (I know it’s a pretty polarizing thing- you either love the banana Laffy Taffy or you despise it), so it wasn’t a surprise to me that I also enjoyed the banana smell of this little ghostie. If you’ve never used a shower bomb from Lush, they’re a bit different from your typical shower steamer. You don’t place this on the floor of your shower, rather you hold it under water and use the foam it creates as a soap to cleanse your skin. It’s a fun sensorial experience, and I am always able to get at least two showers out of my Lush shower steamers (though I wouldn’t be surprised if this lasts for a third- it's larger than your standard shower bomb).

Mean Green Mother from Outerspace Bubble Bar, 5.8 oz

I know that the name implies this is an outer space alien, but to me this looks exactly like a piranha plant from the Mario video games. This is a generously-sized bubble bar, and you can tell it was freshly made because it was super easy to break apart and crumble under the running bath water. Mean Green Mother is citrus-scented, and a little bit is all I needed to create plenty of bubbles.

Ghost Shower Gel, 8.4 oz

There is something about the smell about white flowers that just do not excite me, and the first scent note on the ingredients list was “fresh white lily infusion.” There’s also rose water, jasmine absolute, neroli, and ylang-ylang, and the overall effect is a little a little baby powder-y to my nose. The shower gel itself does a good job of cleansing my skin without stripping it of moisture, and the scent was barely noticeable to me when I had rinsed off and stepped out of the shower. It does pair nicely with the included body lotion, which has a more prominent rose note I appreciate.

Potion Body Lotion, 3.38 oz

The stars of Potion are a rose petal infusion, almond oil, and cocoa butter, and I can definitely pick up on those scent notes- the almond oil and cocoa butter add a warmth to the floral rose. The lotion has a lightweight texture that was easy to rub in, and it felt like my skin went straight to work absorbing all of the hydrating goodness this potion had to offer me.

This month's box also came with a small Lush-branded notebook and enamel pin.

When is the last day to subscribe to get that month's box?

You need to sign up by the 5th to get that month's box. So, unfortunately, it's too late to receive the October box. If you want to receive the November box, you need to subscribe by November 5th. Active subscribers will have their box shipped on the last business day of each month (so active subscribers can expect their November box to be shipped out on October 31st).

Can you customize this subscription?

You can't customize this subscription the way you can, say, an Ipsy subscription where you get to pick a specific product that is then guaranteed to appear in your box. However, active subscribers can log in between the 24th and the 5th of each month to vote on which products they would like to see appear in a following month's box.

Can you skip a month with this subscription?

Yes, you can! According to the Lush website, you can cancel whenever you like, you can reactivate a cancelled subscription, and you can also skip individual monthly boxes and then easily un-skip if you change your mind- all of this is done under the "manage my subscription" section of your Lush account.

My Final Thoughts

I am a huge fan of Lush Cosmetics- the first Christmas present my fiancé ever gave me when we started dating was a $200 Lush gift card, and it felt like I had died and gone to heaven. I thought this inaugural Lush Kitchen USA box was a really solid one. While I would have preferred a more vibrantly colored bath bomb, I think the one they sent will have more broad appeal. I'll be able to get multiple uses out of both the bubble bar and shower steamer, and that large bottle of shower gel is definitely going to last me quite a while. Lush doesn't promise a value for this subscription box, and I don't recommend it if the only reason you would subscribe is to get a discount- you need to have the desire to get a monthly Lush delivery full of surprise products that can't be purchased anywhere else. That being said, based on the product weights, I would estimate a value of about $67.70, which is more than the cost of this box plus shipping.

Just coming here to tell you that “Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” is a song from the movie version of Little Shop of Horrors, sung by Audrey II, the evil venus flytrap looking plant, so you’re right that it looks like a venus flytrap, it’s supposed to!

I thought this was literally going to be stuff for your kitchen lol. Like scented hand soap, dish soap, dishwasher detergent etc. I don’t get to take baths often so I’m not sure if I would use a
Bath bomb every month.

Amy

Okay I’m not normally a Lush gal, but if they released Mean Green Mother and I saw it in stores I would have to snag it, I love Little Shop! Even though I don’t adore the original movie as much, the og Audrey II puppet is one of the coolest puppets ever created

Wow! This looks great. It’s a little pricey, but I love Lush so will try it for a month or two.
The “Subscribe Now” link didn’t work for me, but I was able to get there eventually.

Hmm, this is a bit disappointing. The bath bombs seem pretty small and I agree with you, I don’t like floral scents so I wouldn’t use the lotion or shower gel. For the price I guess I’d rather just go to Lush and buy what I want. Thanks for the review, though, because I was very curious to see what was included.

I get that Lush is pretty big about sustainability, and that’s why they didn’t include plastic wrap, but it seems wild to me that they wouldn’t at least wrap the more fragile items in some sort of paper. I would be really annoyed if I opened a box full of powder! Plus both the bath bomb and shower bomb lost a lot of their definition. Hopefully they will rethink their packaging.

I first tried lush when they only sold in the UK. A fried shipped me a box and I was in love. I just got my box as well and I love it. The lotion smells like clove to me. I love the smell of the monster and had no idea the ghost was used that way so thank you. Can’t wait to see what they do next month

Seems a little thin for 55 bucks. I’d rather just go over to the Lush boutique with 55 bucks and buy what I want. I love Lush but I don’t see the point of this box.

When my box arrived, it only had the shower bomb, soap, bubble bar, and notebook. There weren’t many peanuts protecting the contents, and the box was coated! I reached out to support, and everything was out of stock, so they refunded the whole box. Which was great customer service! I wish I could’ve gotten everything, but I’m excited for next month. Hopefully I get it all in tact.

Oh no! I’m sorry your box was missing some items- but I am glad to hear the customer service experience was on it with rectifying the situation.

The “Kitchens” name threw me off, too. I don’t think it’s the best name.

I didn’t realize the co-founder of Lush invented bath bombs! I have to say I am not a fan of Lush based solely on my experience of shopping in their stores. I just think the scents are super overpowering and triggering, and I usually love scents! I have no problem entering a Bath & Body Works store, for example! I guess I need to give some of their products a chance.

And to echo the others–“The Mean Green Mother From Outer Space” is a song from Little Shop of Horrors, referring to Audrey II (she is an alien plant). It’s one of my favorite shows! <3

The Mean Green Mother is supposed to be Audrey II from Little Shop of Horrors, so you are spot on your idea of what it looks like.

1. What did this have to do with Kitchens?
2. The green soap bar looks like Audrey 2 from Little shop of Horrors. Love it.

Jessica Hapak

Hi Boxy Fox,
Lush has referred to their Lush Kitchen as a place where they “cook up” freshly made bath bombs, face masks, and other beauty products, and the Lush Kitchen will also make limited edition products previously only available through the UK subscription box.

Tania

The Lush kitchen has been around quite a while. A few years ago it was just an option on the Lush UK website. They made new products with limited amounts you could buy what you wanted. Now they have changed it into this box. I liked the old way better. But I also really love the boxes. I have gotten them all for the last 2 years from the UK. We get the same box as the UK, they are not different.

Marie

I don’t think it’s supposed to be kitchen-themed. Lush is known for using more “natural” ingredients. They even have these skin treatments (often using food) that have no preservatives so you can only get them in stores. I think it’s more like…”What did we cook up in our kitchen” box.
