The Adventure Challenge is a monthly subscription that delivers everything you need for a unique, creative date to help you reconnect with your partner as you spend quality time together. While functional by itself, this subscription makes for a great companion to the Couples Camera Set, which is not included.

This is a review of the Adventure Subscription Box, which is currently on sale for $39.99 a month.

This box was sent to us at no cost for review purposes. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Guess what? Just this week, my husband and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary. I'm not even entirely sure how that's possible as it still feels as if I'm in my early 20s. Anywho, to celebrate the momentous occasion, we drove 2 hours for my son's baseball game. (I suggested bringing a bottle of sparkling grape juice to explode at the end of the game, but my husband thought I was insane.) Instead, we opted to celebrate over the 4th, with mini-golf, sparklers, chicken wings, and a movie after the kids were tucked in. Nothing extraordinary but relaxing all the same. To keep the romance going throughout the week, I busted out the latest Adventure Challenge and coaxed my husband into working through this month's comic book theme with me. Read below to find out just how this month's date went.

Diving In

My husband is an extreme go-getter. He loves working with his hands and can build/fix/create anything he sets his mind to. (He actually completely gutted/renovated our 1920s farmhouse inside and out almost entirely on his own!) That being said, my dear, sweet husband HATES art projects. The man will stain boards, wire electrical panels, and dig trenches until his face turns blue, but leaves the crafts to me. While I was super excited to start illustrating my comic book, my husband legit groaned, but did partake because he's a good sport. I have to say, the box itself is awesome. I love the lift up top, but sturdiness and simplistic design, and the fact that I will actually re-use them because they are so pretty. Inside, everything was well organized and packaged neatly. It really felt like a treat to open.

The Paperwork

Included in this month's box is a pamphlet describing exactly what we received in the box, suggestions on how to go about our date, and photos of a couple that completed this rendezvous. As I love drawing and coloring, I was excited to create my very own comic book, but my husband wrinkled up his nose. The instructions were simple: illustrate your relationship through the provided comic books and share with each other when complete. Straight forward yet a unique concept, we sat down at the dining room table and got to work.

Comic Books

The main component of this month's box were of course the comic books. Large in size and full of helpful headings, we also received 2 sheets of stickers, and text bubbles to add to our story. With space to write on the bottom, if you're not great at illustrating, you are always allowed to draw stick figures and use your words to convey your message. I thought these books were really well laid out, thoughtful, and fun while my husband shrugged his shoulders.

Pencils

To start our book, we each received a pencil. While super sharp, I did find the eraser to work very poorly, smearing black all over my illustration.

Pencil Sharpener

To keep our pencils sharp, we also received a handheld pencil sharpener. Easy to use and easy to dump, it worked like a typical pencil sharpener.

Markers

Additionally, we were supplied with a set of 18 double-tipped markers. I love the variety of colors, and the storage case. I do wish the brand of markers was listed but found the quality to be good enough. Just as a note, they are very squeaky on the comic book paper, but worked well.

Comic Book Creation

Because our anniversary is so close to the Fourth of July, I decided an exploding firework was fitting for my cover page. As you can see, the black eraser smeared by the red star, so I tried using a regular eraser to tidy it up a bit. When illustrating, I opted for a more abstract comic book, rather than telling the story, because it would have been just too hard to draw out. The tiger represents our school mascot, which is where we initially met. And the balloons and confetti represent the party we started talking at. I spent quite the chunk of time on my drawings, and have not yet completed the entire thing, but am hoping to have it down in time to send with Dustin on his yearly hunting trip in September. Dustin was a good sport and started working on his book, completing his cover page. I'm not going to hold my breath for him to complete it, but did appreciate the sweetness of his cover page.

Kid Comic

Hank was jealous of our books and decided to make his own comic. Sweetly asking if he could borrow a few stickers, I obliged, and enjoyed watching him start his own little story.

♥ 15 Years ♥

15 years and we're still going strong! While it hasn't always been perfect, we've grown together to form an inseparable bond to keep us afloat in good times and bad. We have found that communication is key - always talk it out, share how you feel, and kiss!

The Verdict

This is our third date box from The Adventure Challenge, and while I had fun doing it, my husband didn't really find it adventurous. Easily following the guide, we put on some music and started creating. I spent over an hour on my illustrations, while my husband finished one page. To be fair, he did sit with me and visit while I vigorously colored, so it wasn't all for naught. The finished products will be really fun to share with each other and a hoot to peek at on our 70th wedding anniversary. While I appreciated the fact that this box was easy to set up and clean up, I felt like it was lacking. Candy treats or bag of popcorn to help round out the date would have been beneficial. All in all, we had an interesting and fun date that took one of us out of our comfort zone!

The Value: Because the materials in this box are custom-made for this box, it is hard to put a retail value on the contents. Between the materials, ideas, and quality time together, I would like to say the $39.99 price is fair but would like to see a few more physical items to add to the value. Snacks, a candle, booze, or anything else to set the mood might have lured my husband in a little bit easier than just the comic book. What did you think?

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Possibly. The Adventure Box is a preset monthly experience, so it just depends on which one they are sending out at the particular time.
