On May 19, we shared an email from Allure Beauty Box announcing their decision to no longer accept Paypal as a payment option. However, some Paypal subscribers, including MSA readers, are reporting that they have been charged--through Paypal.  (note from Kai: I was charged yesterday, June 7).

Allure Beauty Box's email sent to existing subscribers on May 19 did say, in an asterisked note, that order processing and shipping may take up to 3 weeks.

An email to help@allurebeautybox failed to be delivered, but existing subscribers can reach customer service at 1-800-274-1603, Monday – Friday 7:00AM – 8:00PM CT and Saturday: 8:00AM – 4:00PM CT. (I called and there wasn't a long wait at all.) The phone number is not on the Allure Beauty Box "Contact Us" page, and was provided by Allure Beauty Box reps who have shared that in the comments below.

In existing comments to this article, Allure reps have said that the decision to stop accepting Paypal is related to the brand launching "a new and improved member experience this summer." One comment says:

"We understand your concern, but this change is actually due to the fact that we have some good news coming your way soon!

We are in the process of making some exciting changes and will launch a new and improved member experience this summer! Although Amazon Pay and PayPal will not be available at launch, you’ll be able to utilize wallets like ShopPay, Apple Pay, and Google Play. If you currently pay for your subscription with PayPal or AmazonPay, please log in and temporarily change your payment method to any debit or credit card.

We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time. Please stay tuned!"

Another note for existing members:

If you would like to make changes to your payment method or account, this is the note I received (I could sign in today June 8):

If you had an account with us prior to June 7, 2022, you won’t be able to login to your account while we finish getting everything set up. After June 17, 2022, you can come back and click on Create My New Account, at which point you can enter your email address associated with your subscription and create a new secure password. Then you’ll be able to make changes to your account, and shop in the member store.

Again, existing customers can call 1-800-274-1603, Monday – Friday 7:00AM – 8:00PM CST and Saturday: 8:00AM – 4:00PM CST or direct message @allurebeautybox on Instagram, Facebook, TikTok or Twitter.

Note: Hours are likely CT/Central Time, regardless of Daylight Savings. Will update after clarification/confirmation from Allure Beauty Box.

On May 19, we posted the following:

As of May 25, Allure Beauty Box will no longer accept payment via Paypal, says the brand in an email sent today (5/19). Subscribers must update their payment method in Allure's billing system to make sure they continue to receive boxes.

As an incentive, Allure Beauty Box is offering a free Sunday Riley Light Hearted Sunscreen ($35 value) to Paypal-using subscribers who update to a new payment method in the subscription's billing system.

To update, head to the Allure Beauty Box site, click on "My Account" and log in. The "Manage Account" tab should be open, so  scroll down to "Review Subscription" and click "Update Payment Method."

The email reads in full:

Thank you for being a valued member of Allure Beauty Box. Our payment options for your subscription will be changing effective May 25, 2022, and unfortunately we will no longer be accepting PayPal.

To ensure that your subscription is uninterrupted and that you continue to receive all of Allure's editor-picked products in your box each month, please log in to Your Account and update your payment method. You can also email or call us at 1-800-274-1603. We accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, or Discover.

As a special thanks, you will also receive a complimentary Sunday Riley Light Hearted Sunscreen ($35 value) once your new payment method has been successfully updated in our billing system*.

I didn’t hear about this Pay Pal stuff. Nor did I receive an Email telling me anything.
However, I did skip June and July. And if I hadn’t read your post today, Id prob be all messed up 8/1, so Thank you for that.
My Direct Express card that most on SSI use. They do not allow payments to any subscriptions. Time to find something diff than PP.

I filed a dispute with PayPal and was DENIED! They cited the letter implying a termination to the membership agreement because of payment method insufficient evidence to honor the claim. Oh well, I tried. Allure isn’t getting anymore of my business after this shady activity!

This is in regards to my last post on here. I just checked my email and I am being shipped the box. I never received an answer back from customer service and my account was suspended since February. I mean how can they charge me if I didn’t give them the okay to do it and send a box. I need those $25 for other more important things in my life like BILLS! I shouldn’t have to dispute this through my bank.

Hi, Big red flag! I emailed Allure in April to cancel my subscription due to medical bills. I was then charged for June’s box… thinking it was a mistake, I emailed cust. serv. and forwarded the email canceling the service. They wrote back a very curt message that I only paused my boxes??? and then said it was non-refundable.

I am disputing through my bank.

**Please check your statements to make sure you were not charged if you canceled your account.

Hope this helps!

this happened to me as well – charged through PayPal. so their previous communication which explicitly says “PayPal will no longer be available” was a flat-out lie. I’ve called and emailed and gotten a form response about it being ‘non-refundable,’ but I plan to continue emailing until they acknowledge this plainly deceitful business practice. I’ve also filed a dispute with PayPal.

As an update: I emailed Allure customer service (not the help@allurebeautybox, which bounced back, but [email protected]), asking for a refund and for my subscription to be cancelled. I received a reply this morning, stating that they could not make any changes to my account – including cancellation -until the 20th. (They didn’t even address my request for a refund.) This feels super shady and a great way to avoid people cancelling or skipping over a lackluster June box. I have filed a dispute with Paypal.

It’s yet another lie that they can’t cancel your account. When they emailed me back yesterday they said they had cancelled my account. In their words: “You will receive the current box you have been charged for, as the monthly charges are non-refundable. We have stopped your account for all future charges.”

So it’s a lie that they can’t cancel your account right now. I’m honesty aghast at how deceitful they’re being; this is ridiculous.

I was charged on 6/7 but through my debit card not PayPal and I had my account suspended for the time being. I don’t understand why they would charge my card if I haven’t been receiving the Allure beauty box since February 2022.

Paula

I got charged today, too.

I plan to contact PayPal to submit a payment dispute, stating that this is a charge error as Allure has notified us that we will not receive a box with PayPal billing and is not responding to customer inquiries for a significant period of time. I suggest everyone else do the same!

Lin P.

I was also charged today and I’m disputing the charge.
In my refund request, I included a screenshot from their May 19th email that clearly stated that updating our account with a new payment method was necessary to keep the subscription going. It was supposed to be canceled automatically (based on their email) and it was a very unpleasant surprise to see the charge earlier today. There’s not a single thing that I would want in the June box.

Lin P.

PayPal dispute is awaiting the seller’s response (which I’m guessing won’t be available til the 20th), so I decided to do a chargeback on my credit card. A couple of hours later, I got notice that they had shipped the box. It’s annoying because I generally have enjoyed Allure in the past, on and off, but this shady move makes me think never again.

I was also charged today. Not very happy considering we can’t log in to our accounts for a few weeks…..

Melissa Baker

Well you can access your account until 6/14, so that gives you a week to iron this out.
Per the email:
“We’ve got something special in store for you.
Allure Beauty Box wants you to know that you won’t be hearing from us for the next 2 weeks as we work on improving your member experience for you. Our member store will also be closed during this time.

You can still access your account online through 6/13, but from 6/14 until 6/20 you won’t be able to make any changes to your account. Should you have any questions or need assistance during this time, please contact Customer Care at 1-800-274-1603 or [email protected].

We’re so grateful that you’re a part of the Allure Beauty Box community, and we can’t wait for you to experience our new site soon. Stay tuned for more!”

That’s strange because I tried logging in and it wouldn’t work and I got an message saying that I would have to wait until the company changes took place and could reset my account then? I don’t know?

Shea

I was also charged (unexpectedly) through PayPal today. Im a little confused with Allures reply saying to temporarily update the payment method. But, then says you won’t be able to log in because they are changing the site! & on top of that their customer service email is undeliverable?

Hi Kai – please note that standard time is the winter clock. We are on daylight time now, the summer clock (CDT, not CST).

It’s better to simply write CT – this way you give accurate information without worrying about the specific time of year or giving the wrong information.

Reply ButtonReply

Kai @ MSA

Hey Julie! I copied and pasted the info directly from the Allure Beauty Box reps’ comments here (including the times)–but this is a great/important point. I’m making a note of that, will call tomorrow morning to get clarification about the hours, and update the post again if necessary. (You’re likely right that it’s just CT full stop, just want to ask directly.)
Thank you!

Just FYI, I never updated my payment information and was still charged today for the June box through Paypal. Super upset by this false advertising by Allure.

Reply ButtonReply

Carey

Just got charged via PayPal as well. Not particularly pleased about it either.

Reply ButtonReply

Val

I also was just charged via Paypal. I was under the impression that I would not be charged or receive a June box if I didn’t update my account. 🙁

Reply ButtonReply

Jessica Beattie

If they are no longer accepting PayPal, why did I get charged not even 20 minutes ago for this box, through PayPal?!

I looked at the June box on Amazon. What a collection of junk.

Subscription Snob

I can’t wait to hear more about the new “member experience” coming this summer!! It’s time that allure update their sub and get with the program. Can’t wait

Reply ButtonReply

Melissa

Updated my billing info for both accounts, but I also asked if I can skip June on both accounts, so I hope that I still get the free Sunday Riley sunscreen. Do you think they are going to send it with the June boxes or separately?

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

It’s a terrible sunscreen, in my opinion. Gives my skin a violet tinge and then settles into fine lines (like the horizontal lines in the neck) and just sits there, white and visible. Any drugstore generic imitation of Coppertone Sport is better than this sunscreen.

Danielle

It said in my email that it would be sent 3 weeks after payment change.

Looks like I’m gonna take an Allure break. It is my only box and I still have too much stuff. I only use PayPal. Safe and secure. I may come back to Allure one day, we will see.

We understand your concern and apologize for the inconvenience, Noellel.

No, that’s a red flag. They increased pricing so they can afford a small transactional fee which protects the buyer. PayPal is one of few payment options with true buyer protection.

PayPal is my secure way to make payments. I will need to look for another subscription box that does accept this.

Think I’m going to use this opportunity to cancel Allure. They haven’t been impressing me lately, and I’d much rather get the box through Amazon.

I agree. I am tired of getting all skincare and its the same type. I’m very particular about my skincare and have been giving away most of it.

We appreciate your feedback, Heather! Our team is always striving to bring our members the best makeup and skincare products each month, but we understand that everyone’s beauty routine is different and some products may be a better fit for you than others.

We have an exciting lineup of products coming your way in future months, hopefully, you will discover something new and worth raving about! 💗

I wonder if it is because you can control whether you want the subscription to continue in PayPal and deny payments. This isn’t usually the case with credit cards (although there are some now that offer it)

Nope! We’re currently in the process of making some exciting changes, as we prepare to launch a new and improved member experience this summer!

It’s probably because PayPal charges a higher percentage than Credit Cards.

Paypal recently increased its fees to 3.49%. On average, Visa or Mastercard charges 1.5 to 2.5%.

Melissa

What a PITB! Why would they stop accepting such a common form of payment? What is going on with Allure?

It’s for the same reason Costco only accepts VISA cards. It’s to reduce their transaction fees.

PayPal increased its fees recently.

Reply ButtonReply

Dea

PayPal charges them a higher cut than credit card companies do.
