Sensory TheraPlay Box is a monthly subscription service for children on the autism spectrum, or with sensory processing issues. Each box is filled with sensory toys or games that help develop motor skills or address varying sensory needs through therapeutic play. We always love the fun and unique items they send each month!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out our editorial guidelines to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

This month looked like a great mix of items!

What's Inside This Box

Each box comes with a one-page insert with photos of the items on the front and a brief description with their values on the back. It also includes contact information and a disclaimer about how it is the responsibility of the adult to determine whether the items included are appropriate for the child. As someone with a Special Education background, I love that they include this since every child is unique and responds to various stimuli in different ways! There are some items that may not be appropriate for every child depending on those needs.

They also included a nice little motivational card for us.

Scratch & Scribble Art Mini Kit by Ooly - Listed Value $6.00 (price varies depending on style)

Scratch-art cards like these are always a hit with my kids. I love how it gets them to work on their fine motor skills in such a fun and creative way! This kit included a wooden scratcher, 4 cards with pictures already on them, and 2 that were blank so that the kids could make up their own designs. Underneath, the cards were bright and colorful, making them visually appealing as well. My oldest son quickly claimed these for his own and had so much fun scratching different designs into the cards.

Play Dough DIY Mix by The Dough Project in Blue - Retail Value $12.99

This is the only item that we haven't had a chance to test out yet, but I'm really excited to see it when we do! This box contains a bag of a powdered mix (flour, salt, cream of tartar, and spirulina) so that we can make our own dough to play with. We just add water and oil, then cook it like pancakes and it turns into a dough to play with. Since the ingredients are all edible, I would say that makes this a safe dough for kids who tend to put everything in their mouths! They also recommend adding some essential oils to give it a calming scent (which I would not recommend with a child who mouths things).

Pop'n Gears by Ja-Ru - Retail Value $6.99

This toy is so fun! Not only do the gears separate and slide back together, but each center has a little bubble to pop. There is even a little spinner, so that you can put a few together and turn them into a fidget spinner. My four-year-old has been loving this one and making different configurations with the gears. I love that I can throw it in my diaper bag or purse for some simple entertainment on the go! It's another great one for fine motor skills as well!

Pop & Play Tubes by Ja-Ru - Retail Value $7.58 ($3.79 each)

These tubes are such simple toys that always excite my children! They don't always last the longest because they might eventually crack, but while they last, they provide a whole lot of fun! It's so satisfying to pull the tubes out and push them back in and the sounds that they make as you do it definitely amplify the experience. These tubes can also be put together to make a necklace or a new shape so they are great for open-ended play, too.

Stretchy Dough Ball by Ja-Ru - Retail Value $3.99 (Buy 2 for $8.98)

I love playing with this ball! It is squishy and it's stretchy, and the bright green color is also eye-catching. I feel like I have to grab it every time I walk past it sitting on our shelf! The outer layer is really rubbery and stretchy and pulls away from the inner squishy dough, so it's just a great toy to fidget with and definitely helps strengthen your hand muscles.

Chunkies Paint Sticks by Ooly in Neon - Retail Value $7.99

These paint sticks are so bright and really easy to use! They act like markers or large crayons but have a paint-like effect on paper. I was amazed that after touching the heart I drew, it was completely dry. I love that the mess is so minimal and that they are so easy to work with. This is a great way to paint that is simplified and easier for little hands! To mix the colors, you can just use them over top of one another and the effect is still pretty cool! My kids had a lot of fun testing them out.

Air Dough Kit by Scentco Inc in Penguins - Listed Value $2.00 (Buy 4 for $6.99)

The last item in our box was this fun Air Dough kit that provided black, white and orange dough to make some cute little penguins with. My daughter had so much fun making these and I loved how simple the steps were! They even taught her to make her own gray for the baby penguin. I thought hers turned out great! A perfect activity for following directions, fine motor skill practice, and hand strengthening!

I always rave about this box, and the above photos are the reason why! We opened this box up and each kid found something to occupy themselves with and sat at the table working with them. Then they took turns checking each other's toys out. Just knowing that I have something to share with them that is going to engage and excite them is so fun, and if you wait for just the right moment, it can be a pretty great experience!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $42.00 + shipping (Save with longer subscriptions)

The total retail value of our box using a mix of listed and found retail values comes to $48.53, which is just about breaking even if you take into account shipping. I think that's a fair value for this box since the surprise curation is so much of what makes this box great!

Key Takeaways

This box was full of so many fun items! I loved that there was a mix of activities and toys, all of which were so engaging and perfect for my children of multiple ages. They also addressed a variety of skills which I always think is so important for those with sensory needs!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
