Yummy Crate is a subscription box for kids and tweens ages 6-14 created by kids subscription box company KiwiCo. Each month you'll receive three colorful recipe cards, a specialty cooking tool, hands-on projects, and a Yummy Zine with fun facts about food and some history, which adds an educational aspect to the box. With this STEAM-based approach to cooking, your child will learn basic skills and even a little cooking science in the process!

This box was sent to us at no cost for review. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

First Impressions

Although this box is for my daughter, I was pretty excited to see this collapsible colander in our box! I also knew my daughter would enjoy this idea of colorful foods.

What's Inside a Yummy Crate?

Everything you need, other than the cooking tools, will arrive packed neatly inside this envelope. Inside there is a little checklist of what you can find along with a fun collectible sticker. This month's theme is "Bright & Delightful" and involves colorful foods!

Cooking Tools

This month we actually received two cooking tools. The first is this small silicone colander which is also collapsible. It's perfect for rinsing off your fresh fruits and veggies!

We also received this plastic spray bottle which we could use for storing our own homemade fruit and veggie wash.

Grown-Up Guide

A helpful grown-up guide is included that lets you know all of the items you will need for the three recipes. There is a great ingredient substitution list on the back as well.

Yummy Zine

Our Yummy Zine this month was all about phytonutrients and it included some great educational information along with some fun facts. They also included an activity at the back to test what we learned!

Experiment: Produce Power Wash

Our experiment involved making a produce power wash. They showed us how we could use our cooking tools for this.

Activity: Play Word Salad

Our activity was to play a game called Word Salad which I think is a fun way to get creative while keeping it relevant to food and cooking!

The Recipes: Bright & Delightful

We received three colorful recipe cards that were incredibly easy to read and use. This month we were making bibimbap, savory skewers, and rainbow smoothies. These all involved using a mix of bright and colorful fruits and veggies.

Here is a closer look at one of the recipes. The tools and ingredients were listed in checklist form, and every step was marked so clearly and accompanied by a helpful picture. There were even some ideas for customizing your dish on the back.

Rainbow Smoothies

We decided to keep it simple this month and selected the rainbow smoothie recipe. It was actually a bit more involved though since we were layering different flavors and colors! The first layer was supposed to be raspberry, but we figured strawberries would also do the trick! We measured out and blended up our ingredients, then my daughter worked on evenly distributing the mixture into our 4 glasses.

We followed this pattern for each of the four colors. To get yellow, we used mango, the green was a blend of mango and spinach, and our final layer was blueberry. It was a little tricky getting the portions right and some turned out thicker and denser than others, but the overall look was fun and I think it was a decent first attempt for us!

These smoothies got a thumbs up from Liv, myself, and her brothers! As you can see, hers didn't last too long!

Value - Was This Box Worth It?

The Cost: $22.95 + free shipping

This box doesn't just provide recipes and a few cooking tools, they also develop a whole lesson around the dishes which makes this box feel very well-rounded. I think that it's a great little lesson in a box made even more fun by the fact that you have some new foods to try at the end of it! That being said, I'd consider this box a great value, especially since the ingredients required for the recipes don't seem to break the bank!

Key Takeaways

I loved the cooking tools we received this month and the emphasis on cleaning your fruits and veggies - something I now feel like I can put my daughter in charge of when after our grocery trips! The box was fun and engaging but also educational, and our smoothies were delicious!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It is possible you might get this crate, but it is not a guarantee. From KiwiCo:

Crates are assigned each month based on availability and your crate history - not all subscribers receive the same theme each month.

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
