Popular fantasy author Brandon Sanderson has announced four surprise novels and two surprise subscriptions on Kickstarter. Those who back the project have the option of:
- a quarterly subscription, where they'll get one secret new book every quarter in 2023, or
- an year-long subscription, where they get one secret new Sanderson box every single month in 2023; four boxes will contain the new books, and the other 8 will be a "delightful assortment of merchandise and goodies" themed to one of his worlds or concepts (see themes here).
As of 5pm Eastern Time, the amount pledged was fast approaching a jaw-dropping $17 million.
"Over the last two years, I've kept an incredible secret: I've been working on secret projects without telling anyone," says Sanderson in a video posted to the Kickstarter page. He says he wrote an extra novel in 2020 during the pandemic lockdown, as a secret gift to his wife, showing only her the pages. He was so inspired he wrote three more novels after that.
Subscription boxes range from $40 to $500 plus shipping (see here). Themed swag boxes will include three items: one featured and two supporting items. Some boxes may contain clothing (backers will be asked for clothing size).
