[updated post to include Spoiler #2 on 12/21/2021]

Spoiler #1: Ah Cacao Chocolate Bars

Value: $4.50

Our Journee to Riviera Maya, Mexico begins with an ancient, adored delicacy: chocolate. Made from the seeds of the Theobroma Cacao cacao tree, the Olmec civilization was one of the earliest civilizations in Latin America and credited as the first to cultivate the cacao plant into chocolate well over 3,000 years ago.

Subscribers will be able to choose between two chocolate bars: either milk chocolate or Mayan dark chocolate.

Spoiler #2: Tulum Earrings and Mayan Sundial Necklace

Value: Necklace $55, earrings $65

Our Journee to Riviera Maya continues with an iconic sun necklace inspired by the ancient civilization of the Mayans. The sun played an important part in ancient Mayan culture, which included the worship of the sun god, Kinich Ahau. The Mayans were able to keep time using sundials which were incredibly accurate.

These earrings are inspired by architecture from the Mexican city of Tulum. Like these earrings, the architecture of Tulum features interlocking patterns using vertical and horizontal blocks.

Subscribers can select between an antiqued 18k gold or sterling silver finish. The earrings are the annual subscriber bonus item.

Spoiler #3: Wood Molinillo

wood molinillo

Value: $21

Spoiler #3 features a molinillo, a traditional wooden whisk that can be found in Mexico, turning many a hot chocolate into a foamy treat. The molinillo can be used to make traditional Mexican drinking chocolate (or any chocolate bar that can be shaved then melted) into delicious foamy, whipped hot chocolate - yes, including the Ah Cacao chocolate we dropped in Spoiler #1. To use, simply place the handle between palms and rotate the molinillo back and forth.

Spoiler #4: Mexican Embroidered Face Mask

Value: $24

The Mexican Embroidered Face Mask is a vibrant mask featuring a traditional embroidery motif, which is characterized by large flowers in many hues. Colorful textiles have a long history in Mexico, dating back to pre-Hispanic times when cloth was dyed using local plants and embroidered by using the tip of the agave plant as a needle... This embroidery typically depicts the flowers, birds and animals that were local to that area. Traditional patterns varied by region, designs passed down from mother to daughter. These designs are also a reflection of the people who embroider them: they reflect the joy, beauty and struggles that occur in each community, while expressing the creativity of each artisan.

The Mexican Embroidered Face Mask measures 2.5 x 10 inches and is 100% cotton with silk embroidery.

Kevia will choose one of four colors for each subscriber--based on the colors the subscriber selects for the four customizable box items. Please refer to CDC guidelines re: mask usage.

Spoiler #5: Riviera Tote Bag

Value: $55

Inspired by traditional Mexican patterns and vibrant colors, the Riviera Tote Bag is perfect for a trip to the farmers market or grocery store, an afternoon at the beach, or for dashing off to meet friends. The Riviera Tote Bag can hold a beach blanket, a bottle of your favorite beverage and delicious snacks, a loaf of fresh bread and oranges, or a beach towel and a juicy page-turner.

This tote bag is durable, soft and machine washable. Dimensions are 13.5” x 14”, with a handle drop length of 10". You can select from the following two colors: Cream or Indigo.

Spoiler #6: Sabana Maya Blanket

Sabana blankets have a wide variety of applications. Recently, it has become popular to use them during yoga practice for sitting or standing postures or rolled up for support because of their substantial strength, softness and thickness. They are excellent for a picnic, at an outdoor concert, at the beach, or when camping. The beautiful patterns and designs make them a wonderful decorative item in your home as well.

This Sabana Maya Blanket makes a wonderful rug in your kitchen or living room, a durable table covering or lovely art piece when displayed on a wall. Of course, this blanket is also very comfy to warm up with on a cool night.

The Sabana Maya Blanket is 100% cotton and includes 40% reclaimed material. Some initial pilling of material can be expected. The dimensions of the blanket are 46" x 70". You can select from Colors: Indigo, Mocha or Merlot.

I am so angry! I canceled my subscription back in August. I still had a box due but just wanted to be done with it. Well guess what showed up today? A package from Kevia. I looked back at the account and they charged me for an annual subscription in January!! I am furious. I have sent emails with the included cancellation, but now I have to deal with this. Ugh. If anyone is interested in this subscription, please stay away!!!

My box arrived Wednesday night. After absolutely loving the sustainability box, then thinking Kyoto was nice (except for the expired mochi), this one is fine. Not amazing, not horrible.
A question, though: they promised a gift in your next box if you did a reward on this site. Did anyone get one? I didn’t.

I wonder if that’s why there is a cluster of reviews around the start of October.

That should be they promised a gift if you did a review on this site.

Was the gift for leaving a review on MSA? This would make sense with all the over the top reviews of a box with crummy communication and huge shipping issues.

To be super clear: (1) I may be misremembering — I can’t find the email. (2) My memory is that it was “if you provide an honest review” — definitely not “if you provide a favorable review.”

This is not normal and quite unethical. I started my sub box journey 3 years ago and I’ve only encountered it once when I first started out. It was a hygge box on Cratejoy. Extra gift if you left a good review. Huge mistake subscribing to the box and I find any boxes that do this a red flag. There’s a reason for it.

That seems like really questionable behavior by JourneeBox! Is it normal here for subscriptions to give gifts in exchange for reviews?

Ok here’s my two cents: the blanket is fine since it’s not scratchy like the ones I remember getting in Mexico but that’s a long time ago so maybe they’re better now. It’s soft and large and it’s perfect for my couch for my two little dogs to lay on. The tote was snatched up by my 10 yr old granddaughter so I can’t comment too much. She loved the colors (indigo) and put her doll and clothes in it. The molinillo seems pretty legit. My granddaughters were super excited to try the hot chocolate recipe (with the dark chocolate) so that one’s a hit. It’s big but will fit in my utensil holder fine.
My daughter snagged the earrings. I was wearing them and they just happen to be a style we both like but they’re long and she’s taller with a longer neck so, I took them off and she loves them. They aren’t like fine jewelry, surely made in China, but cool if they’re your style. The necklace seems a bit cheap to me. However my 12 yr old granddaughter fell in love and I think it’s perfect for a girl her age. So all in all everything will be used in our family (dogs too!) but definitely not my favorite box and angee’s review is, I’m sorry, pretty ludicrous.

I finally received my box too. Like the other comment, the products are not really my cup of tea but JB refused to let me cancel or skip which is odd because I signed up half a year or so ago for the England box. The Nottingham one.

Chocolate is chocolate and not much to comment about that. Forgot to look at the expiration date.

The blanket is a good size. It’s the same size as the Sundream ones I have which are recycled material Mexican blankets as well. Not really my aesthetic, pattern wise so I guess I use it in my car for my dog to lay one. I’ve been to Mexico half a dozen times and these are the exact ones they sell in the souvenir shops for 10.

The mask is huge. Not really my style to wear a pattern so I’ll give this to a work colleague. Also, as the other comment mentioned, would have been good a year ago. The only time I wear a mask now is at Doctors appointments.

The tote is beyond cheap looking and smaller then expected. JB said it would hold a towel and all this stuff but I can’t see it. Seems like it would rip easily. Not quality at all. Probably will gift to my 12 year old niece.

The one item that was a quality piece was the molinillo. I thought all pieces from this box would be of this quality but unfortunately not. It’s a lot bigger then expected and it takes a lot of room in my drawer. It’s a beautiful piece but a bit unpractical as I don’t make cocoa and would use a normal whisk instead.

Sorry, not sorry but the necklace looks and feels cheap. It’s definitely from China. Doesn’t have the “made in Mexico 925” printed on it. Will gift this.

All in all, not my aesthetic and the quality doesn’t seem to be there. I have since cancelled as a seasonal.

I’m surprised they wouldn’t let you cancel or skip. I asked for a refund, and they refunded my money for the two boxes they still owed me.

Yup, me too! Although from the comments on JB posts, I’m not the only one who was denied. It almost seems 50-50. This was my first box so I think they denied me because they figured I’d never be back after waiting so long. There’s some comment on another post which talks about how to get your money back if a subscription is late on shipping, it’s some FTC law. Wish I knew this back then.

My box arrived today. I am much more a cool-weather, neutral-color type of person so Riviera Maya isn’t my dream destination, but I think what arrived is worth the price paid. The molinillo is much larger than expected, and the blanket also large and quite nice. The mask would have been good to have a year ago, but I suppose I can keep it as a souvenir of the pandemic era. The tote is the only thing that feels a bit cheap/mass-produced to me.

For those wondering about country of origin, here’s what my labels say:

Mask — Mexico
Molinillo — Mexico
Chocolate — Mexico
Blanket — Mexico
Tote — China
Jewelry — None indicated

Overall, not a bad box, and I would probably be more excited about it if it hadn’t taken so long to arrive.

I received my box today — oh my goodness!!! I’m in love!

The blanket is easily my favorite item. It’s quite large, thick, warm and lusciously heavy, and absolutely gorgeous!!! I’m wrapped in it currently and SO cozy.

The mask is lovely and thick yet breathable, and oh so pretty.

The earrings and necklace are even more beautiful in person — the sundial on the necklace is soft yet stunning.

I haven’t tried the chocolate yet but I’m going to do so, with the molinillo! The molinillo was the biggest surprise of all — I had no idea how huge this would be, and looked up a couple of videos on how to use this to make Mexican hot chocolate on the stove. Going to enjoy this experience this weekend with my four year old!!

The tote is so beautiful and soft — I think not intended for loads that may be TOO heavy, but will accommodate endless uses.

This has been my favorite box from JourneeBox so far. I genuinely feel a sense of being transported, and this has been the most unique and well thought out sub box I’ve received in a long time.

So grateful for the refreshing transparency provided by Journeebox in the last email, which simply makes me appreciate this gorgeous box and all the incredible artisan work and extreme dedication by all involved for this production. So SO happy about this gorgeously curated box!!!

Sundream blankets contain 100% reclaimed material, are high quality and are regularly in FFF sales for $15. Remember they profit from this amount.

I highly doubt this after the quality of the dish and furokoshi cloth in the Kyoto box. After living in Japan for 5 years, I have several furokoshi. The one in the Kyoto box was Daiso (dollar store quality in its weight and size. I purchased two different blue ombré scarves from previous boxes and they are cheap acrylic that won’t wash or wear well.

FFF had this in their Add-On Sale for $19. Later sales they were reduced to $15. I can 100% see these selling for $10 in Mexico and that’s including making a profit.

Not to add to the complaints, but I just realized I have 2 boxes left, sadly. Since I first ordered the Summer 2019 box, they have only sent 2 boxes PER YEAR, which started before the pandemic began. I would really like to just be done with this company now.

I really wonder about the future of this subscription box. I’m glad I pulled out when I did. 2 boxes per year is crazy!

It’s sad to see so many people hating on this sub. I get that shipments have been delayed (more COVID fallout), that their CS has been unresponsive but these items seem true to theme and at least thoughtfully curated. I love the knit bag, would wear the mask (over my KN95), and devour the chocolate. The necklace doesn’t appeal to me but I could gift it. The only thing that feels useless is the wooden chocolate whipper because it’s *so* specific and only people with massive kitchens and more storage than they know what to do with would want something like that taking up space but that’s my personal opinion.

This particular curation may not be to everyone’s taste and people are frustrated with delays in receiving prior boxes but it doesn’t hurt to be kind. To each her/his/their own, I guess. 🙂

Just because people leave a ‘negative’ comment doesn’t mean they’re hating on this sub. When I spend my hard earned money and don’t receive anything for 6+ months I have every right to inform others of their issues. JB is having a business issue and it has nothing to do with covid as there’s thousands of us on MSA who have multiple subscriptions (I have 14 subs) which are not late and show up every month. And yes, several contain international products. Covid has just become the go-to excuse for bad business and I’m tired of seeing this excuse 2 years later.

Agreed. I can’t understand why people are so touchy about this sub. We’d never hear the end of it if, say FFF didn’t fulfil its commitments to ship boxes. Isn’t this a business and don’t people make purchases with their hard-earned money expecting the company’s commitment to be fulfilled? What’s this “be kind” stuff? This company has been behaving very unprofessionally and people have every right to complain, period. Do half the people on this board own shares in this company or what?

I am so sorry for the delay. Rest assured we are getting back on track and we are doing our best to get ahead of the curve. We have hired additional help to speed up our process and improve our services.

I’m not “hating on this sub”. I only asked for a refund because I’m concerned that they might close due to the difficulty of obtaining items during Covid, and I can’t afford to just give them my money! That’s not “hating”, it’s just business and math. smh

I am also drafting a letter to the Oregon Attorney General. I would like them to look into Journee Box practices for both fraud and bait and switch. They continue to sell subscriptions when they are not fulfilling the contract and promises made to those who are already subscribing. They advertise a 4 times a year annual subscription, yet I subscribed in April 2021 and have only received one box to date. When I signed up it was under the impression that Kyoto would be Summer, it ended up being fall. Then Nottingham and a German city were suppose to be fall and winter. Yet spring boxes are now shipping. They are refusing refunds for annual.

Jennifer

Hi Erin- you need to threaten to file a complaint with the FTC for failure to ship product in a timely manner, in order to get a refund.

In the US, the FTC requires goods to be shipped within 30 days of payment or the option for a refund. There is the Mail, Internet, or Telephone Order Rule which requires that when you advertise merchandise, you must have a reasonable basis for stating or implying that you can ship within a certain time. Because they keep pushing back shipping without clearly stating you can request a refund, they are in violation of the FTC rule. When you buy an annual subscription, they state on the website the the month they ship. Since it’s way pass that, you have the right for a refund and they can’t deny you.

“If, after taking the customer’s order, you learn that you cannot ship within the time you stated or within 30 days, you must seek the customer’s consent to the delayed shipment. If you cannot obtain the customer’s consent to the delay — either because it is not a situation in which you are permitted to treat the customer’s silence as consent and the customer has not expressly consented to the delay, or because the customer has expressly refused to consent — you must, without being asked, promptly refund all the money the customer paid you for the unshipped merchandise.”

ReportFraud.FTC.gov is where complaints about online purchases can be made
