First Impressions

This quarter’s Bikini Bottom Box blew me out of the water… I could not possibly love it more. The front depicts an eerie night time scene of the iconic Bikini Bottom, featuring SpongeBob, Squidward, and Patrick’s houses, while a dark sky and lightning bolts hover above. But that’s not all -- when you open up the box, you come face-to-face with ‘SpongeBob’s brain,’ an homage to one of the great Halloween-themed episodes from the series.

The box came with an adorable info card designed like a postcard, outlining the box's contents.

What's Inside The Fall 2021 "Boo-kini Bottom" Box

Ghoul Fools Hoodie

This hoodie is by far my favorite item in this quarter’s box. The name “Ghoul Fools” is an homage to the episode that brings back the ghostly Flying Dutchman and his nemesis, Lord Poltergeist. From what I remember, this episode itself made quite an impact with an unsettling ending -- a quick glimpse at Bikini Bottom existing in a sort of afterlife, complete with characters enveloped by the iconic green outlines of ultimate ghostliness. This hoodie has an awesome color scheme that’s almost giving me glow-in-the-dark vibes. The imagery on the back… I love it. It looks like they were going for the look of some of the old-school horror film posters, and it definitely works. The material itself is quite thin but it is lined entirely with fleece, which is a win for me. In Los Angeles, it’s getting chilly enough for a light jacket, and I can assure you, I will be kept cozy and warm in this hoodie.

Hash-Slinging Slasher Poster

Hash-Slinging Slasher Poster for Bikini Bottom Box Fall 2021

No… It can’t be… Not the-- the Hash-Slinging Slasher! Cue the cartoonish screams. Seriously though, this poster took me way, way back. The first time I saw the iconic ‘Hash-Slinging Slasher’ episode as a child, it shook me right to my core. In it, while working the graveyard shift (wink-wink), a bored Squidward comes up with a spooky tale to scare SpongeBob. Now, as an adult, I have the ability to appreciate the ridiculousness of this episode, and this poster definitely evokes that same essence, from the bold, theatrical font, to the inclusion of the rusty spatula. This poster is a bit smaller than a usual ‘poster.’ I would call it more of a mini-poster, and as someone who doesn’t have much free wall space, that’s fine with me. This is an item that will absolutely please any of the hardcore collectors out there. I’m going to break out this bad boy every Halloween and stick it up somewhere to put me in the spooky spirit.

Squidward Vinyl Statue

The vinyl statue for this quarter features Squidward, dressed as the Flying Dutchman. This is a callback from the series’ first-ever Halloween episode in which there’s a costume party at the Krusty Krab. Squidward recreates a booming Flying Dutchman voice and manages to scare SpongeBob twice during the party. This statue featured a durable plastic base, elevating the figure for optimal display opportunities. Any collector would love to have this little figure added to their collection. Plus, I love how it matches this box’s theme to a tee. The design is flawless. I can almost hear the Flying Dutchman’s voice now...

Tote Bag with Zipper

Although I enjoy the collectible items included in this box, there’s nothing better than a themed box that also includes functional items. It’s like the best of both worlds -- functional items that feature some of my favorite characters? Yes, please. This tote bag is made out of that lightweight waterproof-type of material that combats raindrops like a true ‘Employee of the Month’ (SpongeBob pun intended). There’s a nice-sized zipper pouch at the bottom of the bag that will be especially useful for storing a phone charger, gum, and any other smaller items that can easily get swallowed up among the rest of the items one might chuck into a tote. The color theme of this bag is awesome. It definitely gives off that spooky Halloween vibe they were going for. Above all, though, I really got a kick out of how the Flying Dutchman’s nemesis, fellow pirate ghost Lord Poltergeist’s photo adorns the bag, along with one of his infamous quotes, a callback to one of the spooky episodes. The quote on the bag says, “No one touches me booty and gets away with it.” I don’t think they could have done anything else with this bag to make me love it more. I’ll definitely be using this while on the go, whether running errands or packing a few items for a day trip.

Flying Dutchman LED Lamp

The Flying Dutchman has long been my favorite supporting character in the series… So, I am beyond pumped to receive this LED lamp that’s shaped in the Flying Dutchman’s glorious worm-like form! Just pop in three AA batteries, flip the switch, and be mesmerized by the Flying Dutchman’s eerie green glow. I’m planning to stick this little lamp right on my desk and liven up my work space. Instead of working by candlelight, I’ll be working by greenlight, lol. This product is clearly geared toward the collectors out there, but it’s also functional, not to mention super-cool, and I love it.

Pen with Bobble-Head Topper

I have to say, this pen is actually really cool. On the show, SpongeBob once dressed up as a ghost for Halloween -- and that’s exactly what’s depicted here on this adorable pen. The little SpongeBob ghost up at the top is actually a bobblehead, and it wiggles back and forth with each shake. The exterior of the pen is covered in some ghoulish scenery from the show. This is exactly the kind of themed yet functional item that I enjoy receiving, and I will definitely be storing it on my desk.

Spiral Notepad

This spiral notepad goes hand-in-hand with the adorable SpongeBob bobblehead pen. I love it when subscription boxes include products that work in combination with one another. My absolute favorite thing about this notepad is that it features imagery that pays homage to the ‘floating shopping list’ drawn by Mr. Krabs when he’s trying to scare SpongeBob into thinking there’s a ghost at the window… Does the name ‘Smitty Werben Jaeger Man Jensen’ ring a bell? It’s a name most SpongeBob fans did not quickly forget, and perhaps never will! This notepad is going right on my desk, and the next time I need to jot down a note, I’ll be armed not only with the bobblehead pen but also this cute notepad that zapped me right back into my childhood years.

My Verdict

I really love this quarter’s Bikini Bottom Box! Not only was there a large range of products included, but also, each and every item was delightfully on theme. I absolutely love the hoodie, from the color scheme to the graphics and overall design. I’m thrilled that another functional apparel item, the tote bag, was also included, with the added bonus of it being waterproof. The Flying Dutchman LED light was the fantastical element that made this box so hauntingly whimsical, and of course, I loved it. Another great collectible included was the Hash-Slinging Slasher poster, which highlights an iconic episode. The inclusion of the signature figurine, this time Squidward dressed as the Flying Dutchman, was perfectly on theme. Lastly, the pen and notepad were a fun inclusion of functional but novelty items fans can use in everyday life. Overall, I think this was a super fun box. If I had one criticism, it would be that the box arrived in November, not October. This would have been an even more delightful experience during the spooky season.
