New Box Alert: Missologist Makes Mixology and Cocktails Accessible to Women

Missologist is a new subscription box aimed at making cocktails and the fine subject of mixology more accessible to women. Started by Nicole Schaefer, Missologist subscription boxes will include recipes for cocktails, liquor recommendations, tutorials, tasting and scoring cards and surprises.

"Missologist was created because I have such a huge passion for cocktails and mixology, and I wanted to share it with other women. Women have been largely excluded from the cocktail space,” says Schaefer. "I’m the only female mixologist on YouTube. Missologist wants to change that by starting a cocktail revolution. Mixology is fun and doesn’t need to be intimidating. I want women to go beyond the Cosmo and be able to confidently order any cocktail they want when they go to a bar.”

A subscription costs:

  • $64.99 for 1 month
  • 3 month subscription: $185.97, paid once every three months (that breaks down to $61.99 a month)
  • 6 month subscription: $353.94, paid once every 6 months (that breaks down to $58.99 a month)
  • 12 month subscription: $659.88, paid once yearly (that breaks down to $54.99 per month)

Missologist is offering two boxes for December 2021:  "Gingle Box," a gin box; and "Winter Bourbon Land," a bourbon box. The gin box will help subscribers craft two cocktails, Cranberry Sour and Spiced Pear Fizz. The bourbon box will get subscribers pouring two drinks as well: a Maple Cinnamon Old Fashioned and Not Your Mother’s Chai and a Maple Cinnamon Old Fashioned.

Not ready for a subscription? Missologist also offers tools, merch and individual boxes and cocktail kits on their website, missologist.com.

What do you think of this subscription?

I would also like to see a review of this box. The price seems expensive for what you get—I would hope to receive some of the actual ingredients to make the drinks for this price—but I’m still intrigued.

How is the ability to make drinks differentiated by gender?

I thought the same thing. I feel like mixing drinks is already plenty accessible to women. Also, despite the creator’s claim, there are plenty of female mixologists on YouTube. I just did a quick search and a bunch came up. This box just seems pretentious to me. I guess I’m not the target audience.

Same here; I’ve never felt mixology was inaccessible or a gendered activity, and I don’t know anyone who does. This seems like an outdated attitude.

Please clarify for me. Is a 3 month subscription truly only $61.99 or is it $185.97 which in turn breaks down to $61.99 per month? Because the way you have chosen to word it does not make sense. I think it helps people to see the TRUE upfront cost of a multi-box commitment if in fact the company charges you all at once (which you seem to indicate above it does).
