12 Days of Gratitude and Giving: Giving Back to Dress for Success

This is the fifth day of 12 Days of Gratitude and Giving, and we're going to continue the charitable vibes today by giving you a bit of a peek behind the curtain... or perhaps I should say a peek into the closet.

Let's start with a little backstory. Several years ago, we decided to take our reviews to the next level by bringing a professional photographer on board the team. Our photography studio receives hundreds of boxes every year, and many of the products end up in a closet there after they've been photographed. (I've never seen this legendary closet in person, but I've always pictured it to be a little bit like a sub box version of the one in The Devil Wears Prada.)

Every once in a while, the closet hits capacity and needs to be cleared out to make room for new swag, so the items are donated to charity. The most recent donation was made to the Pittsburgh chapter of Dress for Success, and the items were included in an event that took place earlier this month. On November 4th, Dress for Success brought its mobile store to health care workers at Pittsburgh's Butler Memorial Hospital where they were invited to ‘shop’ for high-end clothing and personal items free of charge.

Many of our writers wanted to participate by donating some of their own items to charity, so we decided to organize an MSA team closet clean-out. As a remote group, we each set aside some time to collect garments we no longer wear and gather the subscription box items we no longer use.

I parted ways with a much-loved but never-worn leather jacket, beautiful but ill-fitting jacquard blazer, several books, and a bunch of unopened skincare products. (Don't worry, Olive wasn't part of the donation pile.) Clothing and skincare items went to Dress for Success, and books went to one of my local free little libraries.

Becca donated clothes to her kids' school. They recently started a room in which families in need can “shop” for free for clothing items, and she reports that it's been a great success and very much appreciated by the community.

Nancy needed to make space for new winter clothes, so she gathered up some warm-weather garments to donate to Goodwill.

Kelly did the same.

April also filled up several bags of clothing to donate to Goodwill. She likes to do this seasonally. She and her pup, Wyatt, also do a "sock collection" a few times a year for the local Humane Society. They'll head out together and gather up socks from neighbors and friends to donate along with blankets and towels to local animal shelters and rescues. If you're wondering, "why socks?" They're actually one of the most requested items from animal shelters! For more tips on what to donate, check out this Humane Society Wish List.

Do you have some items in your closet that you no longer wear or use? We welcome you to join us in giving back to those in need.

Thanks for reading, and (spoiler alert!) we'll be back tomorrow with a reader giveaway!

Today is day five! We invite you to join us in cleaning out your closet and donating your unused and unwanted items to charity. Do you have a favorite charity? Give them a shout-out in the comments section below! We'll be back tomorrow with a reader giveaway.

I think Dress for Success is a great place to donate. With three girls in the house and myself we make donating to places a regular thing.
