ColourPop Secret Stash Mystery Box September 2021 Review

ColourPop is a brand born in 2014 right in the City of Angels. Their M.O. from the get-go has been to remain cruelty-free and affordable, with products ranging from face, to eyes and now body. Their products are colorful, user-friendly, and honestly quite addictive. Recently they released a few mystery boxes bursting with different wearable products advertising over $61 worth of product for only $29.

This review is for the ColourPop Secret Stash Box.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

What's Inside This Mystery Box

ColourPop always includes a cute little note with every order.

Ultra Glossy Lip in Irreplaceable - Retail Value $8

(This color is discontinued, but the rest of the shades in this formula are on sale for $4)

I have a vast collection of Ultra Glossy Lips from ColourPop; they are moisturizing and make your lips pop with a glassy finish. This creamsicle shade isn't one I'd choose for myself, but it doesn't have an opaque finish; you're just left with stunning shine with a trace of orange cream if you layer up. This is my favorite gloss formula for its non-sticky application and cupcake fragrance. Yum!

Pressed Glitter in Band Tee - Retail Value $5 (on sale for $2.50)

ColourPop is definitely like Pokemon for me; once I fall for one of their products, I gotta collect them all! I am 32, and I wear glitter eyeshadow pretty much any time I do my makeup. I'll never fall for anyone telling me, "You're too old for that," because I'll never believe that I am old, let alone 'too old' for anything that makes me feel good. This pressed glitter is so easy to use when you have the right tools which include a gentle touch and glitter glue. I've been using NYX Glitter Glue for ages; it is wallet-friendly, and it gets the job done, providing a look that lasts all day long. You only need a tiny bit of glue, so I apply it to my ring fingertip, patting it with my other ring fingertip to enhance the glue's tackiness. I then pat it on my eyelid, immediately dip my finger into the glitter, and press that on the fresh glitter glue. I've found that if I tilt my head to the side while applying I rarely end up with any glitter fallout. This coral/orange color with multicolored glitter is gorgeous and perfect for summer or fall.

Jelly Much Shadow in Saguaro - Retail Value $9 (on sale for $1.80)

I am all about texture, so this product was basically made for me. Texture, shimmer, gorgeous. This fiery color immediately caught my eye, and I was determined to figure out the best application. There are no rules to makeup, and as it turns out, there are no rules to applying jelly shadow. It is so easy; I applied this on top of and under other products and it was still the star of the show. It was even gorgeous on a bare lid. I like that this formula dries completely in just a moment and so easily adds so much to an everyday look.

Lip Oil in Gen Zen - Retail Value $8

Gorg! I am all in when it comes to beauty oil, whether it is for the face, body, cuticles, lips -- sign me up! This dry, dry desert of a body loves the moisture and the sheen. The color payoff of this product is extremely subtle, but the shine is gorgeous. You can wear this alone or on top of any lippie for instant shine and hydration.

Act Natural Mascara in Black - Retail Value $14

As an extremely picky mascara connoisseur, I give this mascara an enthusiastic two thumbs up! When I put the first coat on, I wasn't impressed. The wet formula coated my lashes, but it didn't lift, volumize or lengthen. I continued to apply coat after coat, and I built my lashes up to meet my expectations, which are sky-high! I love this mascara, and I don't even mind applying several coats. It is easy to wash off, it doesn't flake away, and it keeps the curl in my lashes for a long-lasting, full lash effect.

I decided to do an orange makeup look on the single products sent out. I loved this look! I couldn't decide whether I wanted to keep the look simple with the Jelly Much shadow, or press on a ton of the Pressed Glitter so I did both! My left eye has a ton of glitter, and the right just has the Jelly Much shadow on top of a few other ColourPop products. I am wearing a lip stain with ColourPop's lip oil on top; it created a brilliant shine and kept my lips moisturized for a few hours. This look is so much fun for summer, but it will also be great for fall if I swap the lip for a dark berry. Love it! I am also sporting my Act Natural mascara, which is volumizing and lengthening with several coats.

Dry Shimmer Oil in Sangria - Retail Value $10 (on sale for $2.50)

I love, love, love this dry oil. It smells like a tropical getaway, and it feels lovely on the skin. It dries down with a fabulous amount of sparkle and a kiss of hydration.

This product is hard to tame while taking a photo. Dry Shimmer Oil in Sangria, yum! It makes me thirsty for a delicious drink on the beach, but I'll settle for moisture and a lot of glorious shimmer for now.

Animal Crossing Quad in Labelle of the Ball - Retail Value $12

I don't know anything about Animal Crossing, but this palette is a stunner. It is tiny, perfectly sized for travel, but it packs a huge punch in pigmentation and longevity.

Just look at these gorgeous colors! The first shade is a pressed glitter with pastel glitters, followed by a matte electric grape color. The matte purple is a little chalky, but it worked beautifully on a wet brush (the swatch above is a dry swatch, wow!). The third color is a pinky purple with tiny silver sparkle, and the next is a red-based shadow with blue sparkle.

I only used the shades from the Animal Crossing palette, and I love this look. I am thrilled to have this easy palette within my reach when I need a purple look on the go.

The Verdict

Real talk: I loved my ColourPop Mystery Bag! I was impressed with the wide variety of products sent out, especially the eyeshadow quad and my new shimmery and glitter-heavy finds. I've been a huge ColourPop enthusiast since they made their debut, and I'll continue to purchase from them forever! I was a little disappointed that they chose a lot of items that are either discontinued or on sale, but I genuinely love their products enough to look past the retail and sale values and can appreciate the curation.

This box costs $29 + $5.99 shipping (or spend $35 on their site and get free shipping). I calculated a retail value of $66, which exceeds their promise of a $61 value; however, a lot of items were on sale. The total retail value using sale prices adds up to $44.80. The difference in retail value is stark, but I still find the value in having a curated box including products I wouldn't normally reach for but ended up loving. With 7 items in this box, you are paying $4.99 for each item.

To Wrap Up

Can you get this box if you sign up today? Yes, the Secret Stash mystery box is still available. But the items you receive could be completely different from mine.

What do you think of this mystery box?

I’m a self-proclaimed “cool mom” who loves a little, who am I kidding, a lot of razzle-dazzle. I have been box-obsessed for over 10 years, and I am always on the hunt for new beauty, fun flair and trendy clothing boxes. A fun night for me includes an exfoliating foot mask and a bag of Dot's Pretzels while binging Rupaul’s Drag Race.

Snow

Wow who knew glitter could look so pretty! I was extremely weary looking at those products, but they all look fantastic on you, Abby.

ColourPop had deep discounts on their Last Call items shortly after these mystery boxes were launched. I got to pick which products I wanted for a much better deal. In the past ColourPop did mystery bags to launch new products, so these collections of leftovers are especially disappointing, IMO.

Pressed glitter should not be used on the eyelids. It’s not safe.

You’re right Marion, it is totally a “do it at your own risk” type situation, but I find that the glitter glue really helps to keep the sparkles where they should be. It also helps to add the glitter after mascara, which doubles as a safety net.

I wondered how those jelly shadows performed. That color is gorgeous. Great review!
