My Fashion Crate Spring 2021 Review

We received this mini-magazine with all of the information about our box inside. Each page tells us all about the designer and then gives a brief description and the retail value of our items. On the back, it lists some member perks which includes a 20% off code for anything in their shop!

Maskeraide Matcha Detoxifying Clay Mask, 12 uses - Retail Value $20.66

Our first item is fun, unique, and innovative! I am all about a good face mask, and I have always enjoyed any that come from Maskeraide. These little matcha masks come in individual pre-mixed single-use packets that make it so easy to mask when traveling or they'd be perfect in a gift basket for a fun girl's night in! This detoxifying clay mask is free of parabens, mineral oil, and artificial fragrances and it also contains kaolin clay, peach, and lychee to hydrate your skin. Unlike a lot of other clay masks that feel really tight when dried, this one was a bit less intense and left my skin feeling clean and looking refreshed. These little tubes are actually a pretty generous size and if used sparingly, you might even get two uses out of one packet, or at least one mask and enough for some spot treatments later on!

Broken Record Boutique Plant Seeds and Dream Bracelet - Listed Value $12.00

Our next item comes from a cute little mompreneur-run small shop, Broken Record Boutique. This seed bracelet serves as a reminder to dream big and plant seeds that help you achieve those dreams. I love the sentiment and the bracelet itself is simple enough with tiny black beads to wear with just about anything. It is a loose bracelet as well, which makes it comfortable to wear. It looks like subscribers may have received different colors.

Broken Record Boutique Springtime Heart Hair Tie - Listed Value $6.00

This next item also comes from the same shop as our seed bracelet. This hair tie is cute and simple, and again, subscribers could have received one of several different colors. This is slightly uncomfortable to wear on my wrist since the heart is a bit big, but it's a cute little accent for your ponytail.

Area Stars Wooster Crossbody Bag - Retail Value $75.00 (It looks like this color is sold out, but the gray leather version is currently on sale for $49.90)

I love the idea of a simple little crossbody bag like this where you just have room for the essentials! This bag is croc-embossed leather with a polyester lining. It does have that nice leather smell (which to some, may not be a great thing). I love the color and the antiqued brass hardware goes nicely with it. There are several card slots inside and even an elastic strap to hold your cell phone securely in place while still making it easy to grab out when you need it. My iPhone 11 with a case on it fit easily inside with plenty of room to spare. While I like the bag and it is something I would normally find incredibly useful, the zipper on this one keeps getting stuck, which is not exactly something I would expect from a bag that retails for $75.00. It is possible I just received a defective one and I'm sure they would send me a new one if I reached out to customer service.

The following item only comes in the Style Box and not the Accessory Box:

Charlie Holiday Yellow Spring Wrap Dress - Listed Value $104.00

What a pretty spring dress this is! I love the pale yellow color and the light and flowy material. I also love the idea of a wrap dress. While I was super excited to try this dress on, I was severely disappointed to find out that it was not made for girls with big busts. Granted, I am on the bigger end of a size large at the moment, but I had the hardest time getting this one to fit.

I did manage to get it on eventually, but with how tightly I had to wrap it, it ended up being a bit too short to wear comfortably (the outer layer was fine, but the inner layer was way too short) and it was way too revealing at the chest.

I did check out the Charlie Holiday sizing chart just to see what would be the ideal measurements and I was disappointed to see that their 12 L is actually equivalent to a US size 8! It looks like the conversion from the Australian sizes to the US sizes is quite a bit different, which may account for why it was so very tight. I could be reading that wrong, but it did make me feel a little bit better about the fit while at the same time a bit disappointed that My Fashion Crate didn't account for this.

Verdict: This box from My Fashion Crate seemed like it was pretty promising, but after trying all of the items, there are just too many little things that kept this from being a great box. First of all, the dress and the sizing issue was a big disappointment, then there was the finicky zipper on the purse, which I know will keep it from being the quick and easy bag to carry around as it should be. I'm also kind of disappointed that there were only 5 items in this box instead of the 6 that the other boxes have had. While normally that wouldn't be a huge deal if they were all big-ticket items, instead the smaller items felt more like they should have been bonus items in a box that costs this much. Don't get me wrong, I love that they included items from a small shop, but value-wise, they didn't add as much to this curation for me. This box costs $92.95 ($85 + $7.95) and the total retail value using a mix of listed and retail values came to $217.66 which sounds great, but I just wish I could get more use out of these items!

This might be the first review I’ve read on this particular box but, if you discovered that the Aussie sizing meant that you were sent a dress that was at least one and perhaps two sizes smaller than you wear, you have to wonder if every single subscriber also received a dress that is too small!

Calvin Klein (okay, probably his marketing team) discovered over three decades ago that women would be willing to pay top dollar for a pair of jeans that they could purchase at least one size, sometimes even two, *smaller* than they normally wear! I know I saved my money for weeks to shell out $45 (yes, that was a lot!) for a pair myself.

I would have not been happy with this box. The first two pieces (seedbeads on elastic and the heart on elastic) feel like things I could easily pick up at the Dollar Tree. The purse is okay but the zipper sticks is not cool.

You shouldn’t have had to log into your account, realize the dress was from an international brand, check the sizing from that designer’s website and them contact the box to make a subscription. And an XL is a US10? Not cool. I’m right in that 10/12 border.

I immediately forgot what the 5th item was and had to scroll back. The masks seem to be the best item. A fun, fairly useful item.

I went on Ebay to check the resale value of the Charlie Holiday dress. A company can slap any value on something but Ebay allows to see if the item can actually sell for that. I found the exact dress had sold for $9.99 plus a few dollars shipping and there are many more of the exact dress in that $20-30 range, brand new and shipped.

I feel like the real value of the box was:
1. Face masks: $10ish (based on the fact that you cam get a larger container of the same powder for much less)
2. Seedbead bracelet: $1 (maybe 3ish at the high end)
3. Heart hair tie :$1
4. Leather purse thing: $10 due to he fact that the zipper has a design issue (up to $35 if the purse had worked as the site regularly has sales and coupons. ) Plus Amazon has tons of full leather crossbody bags in this style and nicer styles for less than $35.
5. Dress: This is harder to value as, if you loved it and it fit, the value would be higher. The value is really zero as it doesn’t and the company should have chosen the correct size for you. I’m going to value this style of dress at $25 as I truly feel like you can but this exact dress new for that on Ebay. Amazon also has similar pieces for that $25 value.

Total value as it sits right now, with the zipper issue and the dress not fitting: maybe $22
Potential total value had the purse zipped correctly and the dress fit: $63-75
“Retail value” (which really almost means nothing in the subscription box world: $217
What you paid: $93

I really feel like one could easily taken the $93 and bought these exact items (or items they liked better) for less.

This box continues to leave a bad taste in my mouth.

I saw the spoiler for the dress, and when I went to the Charlie Holiday website and saw the Australian sizing, I contact My Fashion Crate who switched me to the Plus-size crate for this season. I am very happy with my BB Dakota striped tank.

Great to know they were able to make that accommodation for you and that you like your tank!

I used to love this box a few years ago when it was like 50 or 55 a month, the items were so much better then too. Now, it is just not worth it at all.

This box felt like one of their older model monthly boxes but at a much higher cost!

Re zipper:
Get a bar of soap, and use it to ‘ grease’ the zipper tracks. Then run the zipper head over the tracks to make sure the soap is evenly distributed.

Wax works too!

Thanks for the tip! I feel like it has more to do with the way the fabric attached to the zipper is though. 😕 I will still try it though!

They can slap whatever values they want on this stuff to pretend like you’re getting a good value, but I think it’s absolutely ridiculous that they’re claiming $12 for a SEED BEAD bracelet on string, $75 for that purse that appears to have glue smeared inside (not to mention a cheap, defective zipper) and over $100 for that polyester dress! This box is consistently terrible, but I look forward to reading the reviews to see how bad each month is.
