Sephora Favorites: Give Me Some Lip Balm Set Review

Everything came packaged in this light blue makeup bag. Even with all of the lip products inside, there was still plenty of room!

And don't forget that with every Sephora purchase, you get to choose two free samples (I am seriously obsessed with that Lord Jones moisturizer after one single use)!

ILIA Lip Wrap Clean Hydrating Lip Mask, 0.15 oz – Estimated Value $11.47 (buy the 0.34 oz version for $26.00)

This is a newer product release from Ilia, so I was really happy to see it in this set. This lip mask is made with papaya enzymes, hyaluronic acid, sea succulent extract (that’s a unique one!), and mango butter. It has a bit of a chamomile taste to it that I found pleasant, and it really did leave my lips feeling more nourished for longer- I really enjoyed this.

fresh Rose Petal-Soft Deep Hydration Lip Balm, 0.07 oz – Estimated Value $5.60 (buy the 0.3 oz version for $24.00)

fresh is known for their lip balm lines, but this is my favorite out of all of the balms they make! This is made with rose oil, vitamin E, and a blend of emollient oils like apricot and grapeseed oil to hydrate, soften, and smooth your lips. I love the texture on this- a little goes a long way and it really melts into my lips, without any stickiness I would get from the caramel lip balm while being a lot more nourishing than their lip treatment balm. The moisture lasts for a few hours on my chronically dry lips, too!

SEPHORA COLLECTION Clean Lip Balm in Coconut, 0.12 oz – Retail Value $7.00

This lip balm was my least favorite of the bunch. While I appreciate that it is full-size, it didn’t really perform well for me. Even though this is made with shea butter and coconut oil, it didn’t give my lips the long-lasting hydration I need from a balm. Within an hour of applying, it felt like my lips hadn’t had lip balms applied at all. If your lips aren’t as dry as mine, maybe this will work better for you, but this isn’t a product I’ll seek out to use again.

tarte SEA Jelly Glaze Anytime Lip Mask in Strawberry Jelly, 0.10 oz – Estimated Value $4.57

Even though tarte appears often enough in subscription boxes, I am still excited to get products from the brand- they rarely disappoint. I’ve tried this mini lip mask before, and I like that it has a pink tint to it- it’s a little sticky for a lip mask, but I view it more as a very nourishing lip gloss that gives my lips a hint of color while still being hydrating. The formula is made with hyaluronic acid, botanical oils like avocado and jojoba, and marine plant extracts to soften your lips, add moisture, and just all around improve the appearance of your pout. Plus, even though this sample is on the small side, a little bit goes a long way because of the thick texture, so this still will last a long time.

PAT McGRATH LABS Lip Fetish Divinyl Lip Shine in Nude Venus, 0.08 oz – Retail Value $36.00

Pat McGrath is a brand I swoon over, and the cost of this full-size lip balm is more than the cost of the entire box! Along with having incredibly beautiful packaging, Pat McGrath is a Black-owned beauty brand that creates luxury beauty products with quality performance. Did I mention the packaging? I love the shiny metallic pink and gold, and the lip product inside is just as lovely. I would classify it as a cross between a lip balm and a sheer lipstick- the color is very faint on me (and would probably be non-existent on some deeper complexions), but it still is enough to make me feel put together and pretty. The hydration is really great, too- when I applied it in the morning I didn’t feel the need to reapply until after I ate my lunch.

Here are the swatches of the tarte (on top) and the Pat McGrath (underneath).

The Wrap Up:

The Verdict: I always love getting my hands on these Sephora Favorites sets, and this curation of lip balms did not disappoint. I was able to get a restock of two minis I already tried and enjoyed (the tarte and fresh balms), I was able to discover two new great balms between the ilia and Pat McGrath, and I learned that the Sephora Collection lip balm isn’t for me. Really, even if you’re only interested in trying out Pat McGrath at a discount I still say this kit is worth the price. Value-wise, everything added up to $64.64, which is close enough to $65.00 for me to say they met the promised value.

Can you still get this box if you order today? Yes, as of publication, this set is still available!

Value Breakdown: This kit costs $30.00 and has a value of $64.64. That means you're paying approximately the following for each item:

  • Ilia: $5.32
  • Fresh: $2.60
  • Sephora Collection: $3.25
  • Tarte: $2.12
  • Pat McGrath: $16.70

I have a question about the fresh rose petals one. Does it have a heavy rose scent?!? I’m just not a fan of anything rose or lavender scented. So I’m kinda leaning towards getting it because I think I will like most of the others but if it don’t have a huge rose scent then that might tilt the scale to make it go from a want to a need. Bahahahaha

Slightly OT, but Sephora has come out with a few new perfumes Favorites kits, one of which is called Bestselling Beachy Perfume Sampler Set for $25 for which one of the rollerballs/travel sprays you can exchange the voucher for is for a Tom Ford eau de Soleil Blanc which retails for $65. That’s a pretty nice discount!

I feel like their fragrance kits tend to be better value. I think the Lashstash is also a really good deal! If I were more interested in fragrance and mascara I would buy all of those up in a heartbeat.

I recently started to get back into fragrances so I was sold on them 🙂 whereas I used to always overlook them. Before WFH, I was really obsessed with mascara and got every lash kit, but I’ve skipped all of them since mid- or late 2019 (whenever the last one was in 2019). I look forward to partaking in them again someday 🙂

FYI, you can still get free shipping at Sephora with code “FREESHIP”!

Fun kit! I am seriously into lips. I wear heavy duty matte lipstick practically 24/7 that doesn’t budge so I can appreciate all these balms and masks. What I can’t see is spending $36 on a balm that barely shows up. Maybe I’m just too thrifty, but the price tag on some make up items can be seriously cringe worthy.

The Pat McGrath balm definitely shows up well on my lips, although I am fair skinned. In fact I like it so much I am planning on buying another kit during the upcoming sale if it is still available. It is worth it to me just for that item and everything else is a bonus.

JoJoB,

Thanks so much for the tip. It was really kind of you. I am definitely going to check those out!

Piper just FYI (in case you are interested) there are 3 or 4 Pat McGrath lip kits on sale right now at Sephora as well. I’ve always wanted to try her line and I ordered 2 of them. They are on sale for $12.50 each! It’s the mini lip products (not full size) but each set has 3 of them in it. Mine came today and I’m over the moon about them!

I agree! And even when there is a difference in quality, it’s often still not enough to justify. Case in point: I recently bought several vivid eyeliners in blue, purple and green from Ulta’s brand and Urban Decay to compare. While the Urban Decay didn’t budge and was more deeply pigmented and sparkly, they were $22 a pop, versus $8 for Ulta’s (on sale). The difference wasn’t THAT big.

I agree about Ulta’s eyeliners! The copper gel one is my go to and they often have these on promotion for buy 2 get 1 free & they count towards the gwp bag they do a couple times a year. And this does look like a great lip kit 🙂

Lori

Agree! I had to do the colored eyeliner test because all we ever get is black, haha!

Great example! I love stuff like that where people put two similar products to work and then compare. I really hate paying full price (or a more expensive price) for stuff unless it’s truly amazing. That’s why I love beauty boxes because we can try things for a fraction of the price ☺️
