Bookroo Picture Book February 2021 Review

Bookroo sends the books individually wrapped each month. These polka dots are too cute!

Bookroo always includes an insert that gives a brief description of the books you receive with the board book box selections listed on one side and the picture book box selections on the other. They encourage you to share your books on social media and to leave a review of your book.

Pop! by Jason Carter Eaton - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $7.44)

Dewey is used to spending his time alone and doesn't seem to have many friends. He enjoys popping bubbles, but he thinks it's very important to make sure that every last bubble gets popped. In our story, this last bubble gets away from him and so he goes to new lengths....and heights, to reach them. His roof isn't quite high enough, neither is the hot air balloon or the helicopter that he politely asks to borrow. This book had a silly premise that led to a fun ending and my kids and I enjoyed reading this one together. It was a great book for inspiring their imagination, and the illustrations were really beautiful! We enjoyed looking at all of the detail and the beautiful colors on each page just as much as we did reading the story.

Lorraine: The Girl Who Sang the Storm Away by Ketch Secor - Retail Value $17.99 (found here for $8.59)

This book has a nice musical theme and rhyming text to really emphasize it, which makes sense if you read my notes about the author at the end. Lorraine and her Pa Paw love to play music together and they are able to find comfort in it through a storm. When some of their most beloved possessions go missing, it's a bit of a mystery until after the storm subsides, they see just where their belongings have disappeared to. My kids had fun hypothesizing about what happened to the objects and they loved that Pa Paw played the harmonica just like their Grampa does, which was a fun connection for them. Again, this book really blew us away with the illustrations. They were so detailed and realistic, the photos depicting the storm were gorgeous and these had us all incredibly engaged and gave us more to discuss than just the storyline.

Fun note: the author is a member of the band Old Crow Medicine Show which is one I enjoyed in my college days. If you aren't familiar with them, you're probably familiar with Darius Rucker's version of their song Wagon Wheel (originally a Bob Dylan demo). The kids had some fun listening to the music when we finished our story!

Verdict: This month's Bookroo picture books featured some great stories, but mostly we were all really just blown away by the gorgeous illustrations in both. I love that these books provided a great way to discuss illustrators and how much they can add to a story. While they enjoyed the whimsy and outrageousness of Pop!, I preferred the sweet story of Lorraine, but both were winners this month! The total retail value of our books comes to $35.98 which isn't bad for a $24.94 ($19.95 + $4.99 shipping)/month box, although with sales prices we come up a little short at just $16.03. There is definitely some value for me in the curation though because otherwise, we may have never discovered these books!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!
