Margot Elena Winter 2020 Review

This box comes with a card detailing all of the items included. This box has a festive holiday theme that is filled with bold pinks and gold.

Library of Flowers Linden Parfum Crema, 2.5 oz - Retail Value $22.00

Linden is a Margot Elena scent I really shouldn't like, but like most of her scents, they win me over. This is a watery sort of perfume that reminds me of wet spring gardens or maybe lilypads in a fountain. There is also a warm honey note here that is balanced by a tart lime. It sounds like a lot is going on (and there is) but it all works together to form a scent that feels very much like spring. I really like the Parfum Crema pots from ME because they project a ton of scent. You could get away with a few dabs of this on your wrists and neck and be fragrant all day!

Library of Flowers Gift Tag Kit - Listed Value $24.00

This arrived a little too late for me to use on Christmas presents this year, but I don't mind at all because these tags aren't specifically 'holiday' in appearance. You could use these on gifts for any occasion! My favorite is the beautiful bird design. I will be saving that for only the most special of packages! The other tags feature floral and geometric ME designs and have spaces for noting who your present is for and who it is from. They are all on thicker paper and come with pink twine.

Library of Flowers Honeycomb Soap, 5 oz - Retail Value $12.00

This soap smells like a warm, creamy, honey bomb! There are also notes of warm and comforting vanilla and sweet figs too. This is exactly the sort of scent I would use in my shower because it leaves behind that marvelous fragrance on my skin. With shea and vitamin E, my skin feels as soft as it smells! There was a little bit of discoloration on my soap, but I think maybe some ink from the packaging bled onto it a little. It is a flaw that doesn't bother me in the least.

Library of Flowers Ceramic Soap Dish - Listed Value $23.00

Is it silly to be this excited by a ceramic dish? The moment I pulled this from the box I was in love with the adorable small scale print in yellow, blue, and green. I keep trinket dishes all over my house to hold jewelry, perfume samples, pretty rocks I find randomly, and more. The pattern on this one I just find so precious and tiny and I could never cover it with a bar of soap! This is my new little treasure on my vanity to hold my other little treasures.

Lollia Imagine Perfumed Shower Gel, 8 fl oz - Retail Value $28.00

This is another "wet garden" sort of scent, but Margot Elena does them so well, it doesn't surprise me she has a few. This one feels a little more tropical due to the warm coconut and orchid notes. I say that cautiously because I am someone who doesn't normally like coconut scents and I don't want you to think this smells like a beachy cocktail or suntan lotion. It is much more floral and breezy, but the coconut gives it a warmth that feels like warm summer skin. Margot Elena's shower gels are always thick, dense gels that lather up wonderfully. Because you need so little to get suds, these big tubes last a long time!

TokyoMilk Everything & Nothing Rollerball Parfum, 10 mL - Retail Value $25.00

I didn't love this scent at first, but like literally everything TokyoMilk, I knew I had to let it bloom! TokyoMilk is the wild and weird child of the ME collection, and my personal fave. A lot of the scents under this label are experimental and totally unique. 'Everything and Nothing' has listed notes of "sweet orange, pressed petals, desert moss, and tea leaves" but until it dried down, all I could smell was alcohol and oranges. Give it a few minutes and it transforms into something much more interesting! The desert notes remind me a lot of Proenza Schouler's Arizona but the citrus gives it a little kick! The tea lives deep down in the base and adds a brown but leafy quality that you kind of have to search for. I liked this scent quite a lot, though the longevity on me wasn't the best.

TokyoMilk Blush Oil Stick, 9 g - Retail Value $26.00

I feel like I have come a long way when it comes to cream blushes. I used to HATE them, but then 2020 happened, and I stopped wearing serious foundation and opted for a BB or CC cream instead (if anything). I also stopped wearing powder, which I think opened the door for cream formulas. As a bonus, I discovered that they often double as really great lip colors! This stick works on both my lips and cheeks beautifully. It is a rich, true red, so I try to apply it to my cheeks sparingly but I go full tilt on my lips! A dot or two on each cheek followed by tapping of my fingers creates a perfect flush. And on my lips, it is a dramatic yet sheer red.

Here is an arm swatch..

Here is a shot of me with a bare face.

And here is a shot after I used the oil blush on my cheeks and lips!

TokyoMilk Let Them Eat Cake Lip Balm, 6.2 g - Retail Value $10.00

I think the lip balms from this brand might have the only packaging I am not crazy about, because the pots are so small! I don't love sticking my fingers into pots (especially not these days) so I usually just kind of stick my lips into the pot with a lot of my balms. Hey, it may be weird, but it works! This pot is too small for that. Which, really isn't a fault because most people aren't applying balm my literally sticking their lips into the packaging like a weirdo. ANYWAY, this stuff feels great on. And it smells just like cake frosting!

Lollia Breathe Travel-Size Handcreme, 35 g - Retail Value $15.00

This scent reminds me SO much of Issey Miyake L'eau d'Issey. It is a white floral (lily and peony!) with fresh air and water notes, and a little bit of hidden spice in the base. It also feels a little powdery and sexy. It is a soft enough scent to wear alone, but I also think it shines when combined with something bolder, adding femininity but never seeming like too much. This travel sizes tube is perfect for a purse and the creme itself feels great on my hands and never too greasy.

The Cottage Greenhouse Grapefruit & Blood Orange Lotion, 8 oz - Retail Value $28.00

The Cottage Greenhouse line is actually my least favorite from Margot Elena, but that is mainly because I like the more complex (and often somewhat odd) scents from her other lines. The Cottage Greenhouse is fresh and simple, and there is nothing wrong with that! This lotion was very lightweight but still hydrating, and features a scent of sugared grapefruit and bold blood orange. It is a very energizing and clean smell.

Verdict: Margo Elena Subscription Box is a quarterly box I am always really excited to get my hands on! I am someone who is crazy for scents and this is the perfect box for a fragrance addict. Add to that that everything is utterly beautiful? I love it. My favorite items this month would be hard to choose... but I loved the TokyoMilk rollerball, the honey soap and ceramic tray, and the oil stick. The only thing I gifted this delivery was The Cottage Greenhouse lotion, but everything is so incredibly giftable in the box you could totally shop from it for gifts. Or, you know, keep it all for yourself!!

 To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, the Fall and Winter boxes have both sold out. The Spring 2021 box would be your first if you sign up today.

Value Breakdown: At $59.99 + 6.95 shipping, each of the 10 items has an average cost of about $6.00.

I so agree with this sentiment: (this) “Margot Elena scent I really shouldn’t like, but like most of her scents, they win me over.”

I recall the box in which I received the Tokyo Milk (heart) And Soul perfume. I shouldn’t have liked it. I’m gourmand through and through! And this scent was worlds away from that. But of course I spritzed it on, and found myself putting my nose to my wrist repeatedly to just keep smelling it. It ended up being one of my favorite scents. It’s kind of like what Philosophy Amazing Grace wants to be when it grows wiser (but not older)…the pure essence of “clean” but soft and playful.

And that ‘watery’ attribute you mention is exactly how I’d describe a few of the ME scents (this and also beautiful Song of the Siren, another sub box win). Watery and ethereal. They drift in and out of view, and when they waft past, you find yourself searching for the scent. Totally ethereal.

I can’t thank MSA enough for making me aware that ME exists. My life is truly prettier and better-scented for it!

The ME Parfum Cremas are FABULOUS. I wish they made a Crema version of all of their scents (Tokyo Milk especially); I’d buy every single one. I do own several of those they do make, and while I love the intoxicating Honeycomb, my all time fave has to be the heavy, boozy True Vanilla. It is so good on its own, but even better when layered under some other scent. Just dab a bit of the crema on your wrists/forearms, then spritz another scent atop, and you’re now wearing a deeper, sweeter, boozier version of your otherwise mundane perfume. Of all the cremas, Linden is actually my least favorite, and it’s still lovely to me.

Oh and also I’d like to thank MSA for even helping me discover ME and other sub boxes. Prior to finding this site, the Sephora Play box was the only box that I knew to exist. A year (and six different sub boxes) later, I can attest that MSA has opened my mind (and my wallet) to so many delightful boxes. I thank you! My wallet, on the other hand…

And before I sign off, I’m going to say it one more time in the hopes that someone from ME sees this: can you guys please, pretty please with True Vanilla on top, consider making your other scents available as Parfum Cremas? Like the Tokyo Milks? I would LOVE a crema version of Song of the Siren…I think my nose would be permanently attached to my wrist if this were to become a thing. And how fun would it be for you guys to design the packaging for such items? It’s a new year and wishes can indeed come true!

Loved this box as I have loved all of them. Although this review reminded me that I did not receive the perfume so I guess I better contact them. Hopefully they’ll send it.

Margot Elena is my all-time favourite box. Even though I have 10 unopened hand creams from previous boxes – I don’t care. Everything is just so beautiful! And I love the lifestyle items the best. All hail Margot Elena!

I’m on hiatus from this one, because I have severe product overload, but I still love reading the reviews – thank you Megan – you look great in that blusher! I miss this subscription and the beautiful presentation. Looking forward to when I get my stockpile down enough (looks like another year!)

Margot Elena is the one box I can’t give up, even when shuffling around subscriptions. It’s like uwrapping a pile of presents, and if anything doesn’t work I am able to pass it on. (Like the Linden Creme, which I really like, is a repeat from one of the first boxes – so I gifted it to my older sister who loves floral perfumes and bath/body stuff, since I’m still working through the first one!)

I also got the Scent “Everything & Nothing” and love it! I think I’ve liked everything in the Tokyo Milk “Dark” line, though, they are so unique. On me, the initial alcohol scent only hits for 10-30 seconds.

Her perfumes don’t have a ton of sillage, except the Parfum Cremas, so I really like wearing them as “personal perfumes” that won’t waft around and give other people headaches – not that clashing perfumes in crowded places is really a concern this year.

I wrote up a review on Fragrantica for it since I was really taken by it:

For E & A, Ihe balance of white florals, sweet orange, and earthier notes like moss and tea is just somehow magical. It’s like Red Riding Hood traipsing through the forest with a basket of goodies.

The first hit once applied is a sweet freshness, like entering a meadow to pick wildflowers while the scents wafting from the basket mix with those of the distant forest. The orange scent weaves in and out here, but doesn’t really read as “citrus” to me, and certainly isn’t tropical; it somehow comes off as a more gourmand note, like thin candied orange slices. In these opening notes, I pick up the white florals perhaps the strongest, but they are balanced by the orange so it doesn’t come off as a traditionally floral perfume. Even though sweet, it is not cloying, nor overpowering.

After an hour of this pleasant sweetness, the Earthier tones start coming through, as if Red’s gone from the dewy meadow to the outskirts of a damp forest, and is now picking her way through the underbrush and getting her bearings. The sweet scent is still there, but lighter, now flanked by richer scents of moss and tea. It’s this middle wear which is my favorite, though I love it start to finish.

The earthiness grows deeper for a while, as if going deeper into the forest, with the day wearing on, with perhaps the scent of a wolf snatched up by the breeze now and then. But then it begins to lighten again. The tea recedes, though the moss still balances the sweetness, as if I’ve gone past the thickest trees and am headed to the other side. The sweeter orange scent begins to fade entirely. At last even the moss recedes, and everything lightens, as if we’ve finally reached Grandma’s house and are inside now, but the scent of the forest still comes through the window.

The “final form” of the perfume rests very close to the skin as a soft tea-tinted floral, as if Red finds real-grandma waiting, not a wolf, and grandma gives her a cup of soothing green tea, with petals afloat, to rest after the journey.

Wow…that’s a very thorough review! Seems like a fragrance I’d like.
Thanks for sharing!

As much as I love the packaging and presentation, I’m glad I ended my sub so someone else could enjoy it. I still have items I never used from the last couple years of ME boxes.

I never loved the scents or products as much as I wanted to, but their lip balms are my absolute favorite. I DEFINITELY have FOMO over that blush and lip oil, though. The color is gorgeous!

Jennifer

I love it as a blush but hadn’t tried it on my lips. I did that this morning and it was very hydrating. The color was pretty, and it left behind a gentle flush of color, like a lip stain would, even after I ate and drank. My lips feel crazy soft now, so I’ll be using this as a lip color more often!

Karen

I tried it this morning along with the lip balm and it’s a beautiful shade of lip color, a perfect red for cool skin tones. Thanks Megan for the idea.

Jennifer

The lip color didn’t transfer that I noticed onto my cup or face mask, but I wore it at a less bold level.

Inge

Does the color transfer when you used it on lip? Thank you.

Lindsey

If you’re signed up in swaps, there is plenty of the blush oil stick on there!

This was my first Margot Elena box, and it was a real treat to open. I loved how everything was wrapped and presented. I wonder, though, if I should be concerned that my blush stick didn’t come in a box.

Reply ButtonReply

Taren

No because all of their brands are “in house” brands, they aren’t distributed from other companies, or old overstock that couldn’t sell. It’s all their own, so not out of date factory rejects, from a mass marketing company, etc.

Sherri

Mine didn’t either, just with a label stuck to it (well, not really, the label was floating in the box but it was curved so clearly had once been wrapped around the tube). I had previously received the same product in another sub box and that one was in a box. I can only presume that a non-boxed version was a cost saving measure for ME.
