January 2021 BeautyFIX Review

Included was a handy booklet with all of our products inside!

100% Pure Bright Eyes Mask, 2 patches - Retail Value $7.00

I love eye masks- they are a great way to make me feel and look more awake, and you can wear them so easily anytime (drinking coffee, reading a book, checking emails, sipping wine and watching a show). I can always feel when my eyes are puffy which is why I like to keep eye masks on hand to reach for when I am feeling that puff. These were up there with my favorite eye masks! They instantly felt cooling, letting my tired eyes feel this charge of energy. Each mask is made of 95% organic aloe juice and 5% plant cellulose along with natural caffeine to help de-puff. These were a great treat!

SKIN INC Supplement Bag Collagen Serum, 0.34 fl oz. - Retail Value $35.00

Collagen = youthful skin. That is always what I think of when I see collagen serums like this one. At first glance, I was so amazed by this pretty little bottle and green beads inside. I learned that the green beads inside are actually Proprietary Japanese seaweed encapsulation which delivers nourishing ingredients. The liquid portion is humectant-rich to help hydrate your skin. This serum in particular contains marine-collagen which supports firmness and suppleness within your skin to give it a more youthful look and feel. This serum is made without scent, parabens, sulfates, or phthalates. I have found this serum to be so light while still providing a nice layer of hydration. While I can't say that I have noticed a huge change in my skin, I have only used it a few times so I'm sure it will take a bit of consistent use to see results. I love the way it makes my skin feel though which is good enough for me! I can't wait to continue using to see some improvement to my ever-changing skin.

Rahua Voluminous Shampoo, 22 mL - Estimated Value $2.72 (buy 275 mL for $34.00)

Rahua Voluminous Conditioner, 22 mL - Estimated Value $2.88 (buy 275 mL for $36.00)

I really love when boxes send a shampoo and conditioner set because it really allows you to get the full effect of a product line. Unfortunately for me, this shampoo and conditioner are meant for fine and/or oily hair, but I have super thick curly hair. My husband has very long fine hair that is color-treated, so I really like passing hair products like this along to him to test since he can speak to its benefit better than myself. These are made with green tea antioxidants, citrus juices and lemongrass to remove product build-up and reduces oil production, Rahua oil to prevent breakage, along with lavender and eucalyptus. While the conditioner works to provide a rich yet weightless condition to add fullness and bounce. I thought my husband's hair smelled amazing after he used this set, I could instantly smell the green tea and eucalyptus! He said that the shampoo had a really nice lather, leaving his hair feeling super clean without making it dry. The conditioner he wasn't in love with, saying that it didn't work well at detangling his ends and left his hair feeling knotted more quickly. All in all, he enjoyed the scent and texture.

COOLA Full Spectrum 360° Mineral Sun Silk Creme SPF 30, 0.24 fl oz - Estimated Value $6.72 (buy 1.5 fl oz for $42.00)

I go through sunscreen pretty quickly since I add a little to my face every day no matter the season or weather. I'm also always trying to find that perfect one that works well with my skin without leaving me greasy. This sunscreen passed the test! It was lightweight, hydrating, and marks all of the protection boxes. This is an oil-free formula that helps to protect your skin against HEV light (including blue light), IR, and pollution. It also is a non-nano zinc oxide formula that creates a layer that works perfectly under makeup, making it great to use year-round! Honestly, sunscreen is so important and a step that we forget in our daily routine probably because the sunscreen of our youth or pool days is always heavy, greasy, and leaves a thick layer on your skin. Sunscreens like this one really act as a protective barrier while also hydrating your skin to make it more youthful. I am going to be buying a larger bottle of this I loved it so much!

SkinMedica AHA/BHA Exfoliating Cleanser, 1 fl oz - Estimated Value $7.83 (buy a 6 fl oz for $47.00, found on sale here for $42.30)

I love exfoliating cleansers, but I always try to remind myself that using these too often is not great for your skin. Over-exfoliation anyone? I'm guilty of it. That being said, I found this to be really gentle on my sensitive skin. The main ingredient, Salicylic acid, is an exfoliant and anti-irritant to fight acne. Other ingredients include bilberry extract, licorice extract, ultra-fine jojoba beads, and citrus oils. This mild cleanser works to exfoliate, unclog pores, removes excess oils and makeup, to improve your skin's tone and texture. This wasn't drying at all either! Since this didn't irritate my skin and it didn't leave me with that patchy dry feeling that other exfoliating cleansers can do, I am planning to use this at least once a week during my nighttime skincare routine.

Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 8% AHA Gel Exfoliant, 0.5 fl oz. - Retail Value $10.00

This might be my new favorite product. Honestly, I wasn't sure what this was at first so I did a lot of research on it and the brand before using it. When I see exfoliant, I think that it should only be used sparingly, but this can be used up two twice a day every day because it is a non-abrasive exfoliant. This is a liquid gel made with glycolic acid to gently and naturally, shed built-up layers of dead skin. It helps with uneven skin tone, smoothes the appearance of wrinkles, and will create smoother, firmer-looking skin over time. I've been applying this only in the evening with my night routine for now, but I am so happy with the results so far. It hasn't dried out my skin, I haven't experienced any redness or irritations. I have noticed an overall improvement in the texture of my skin and blemishes seem to disappear faster as well. While I can't speak to the long-term benefits of this product, I can say that it is already giving my skin a new look, which is welcomed since my skin has been in bad shape lately. All in all, I am going to be ordering more of this right away because I think I am in love!

Bioderma Hydrabio Serum, 0.17 fl oz. - Estimated Value $3.43 (buy 1.33 fl oz. for $27.99)

This product is meant for dry, dehydrated, and sensitive skin. Me, me, and me! This serum is made with nourishing niacinamide and Glycerin to gently alleviate dryness, dehydration while providing soothing comfort to the skin. This serum is truly amazing! It feels so light and cooling going onto my skin and is already working to repair my intensely dry skin. The site also recommends that this works as a great makeup base so I have been trying to make this be the last product that I use in the morning before applying my makeup. I will try anything if it will help with my dry skin because this winter or maybe just the past year has done a number on my skin. So far this product is amazing and just really helps to calm it down and I wake up feeling hydrated instead of dry. This is another product I am going to be buying more of!

DHC Face Wash Powder, 0.53 oz. - Estimated Value $3.90 (buy 1.7 oz. for $12.50)

I just cannot get behind face wash powders. Am I the only one? I always end up wasting so much product because it goes everywhere and I never seem to be able to get the proper lather. This wash was light with no scent, which I liked, but I didn't feel as though it did a great job at making my face feel clean. I still had a good bit of build-up and did a second wash after using this. The site does recommend using this as the second step of the Japanese double cleanse regimen (after cleansing oil). So maybe I need to try double cleansing again. This wash is made with lavender, honey, licorice root extract, sodium hyaluronate, milled silica, and protease enzyme. All of these combined work to exfoliate, smooth, and hydrate your skin.

Christophe Robin Cleansing Purifying Scrub with Sea Salt, 40 mL - Estimated Value $7.20 (buy 250 mL for $53.00)

My husband is obsessed with this brand! He just ran out of his jar of this exact scrub so he was giddy when I showed him that it arrived in this month's box! This scrub is great for oily scalps, especially if you don't wash your hair every day like my husband. He has said how this lathers so well and provides him with an amazing clean feeling that lasts for days without making his hair feel stripped of hydration. I don't have oily hair so this scrub doesn't work that well for me, but for my husband, he cannot recommend this enough!

Verdict: This was my first BeautyFIX and I really loved it! My skin has been pretty bad for a while now with breakouts and being super dry. I have really been feeling in a funk about it, and have started to think that the products that I have been using for so many years just aren't doing the trick anymore. So this box came at the perfect time to really allow me to research new brands, new products that I would normally never reach for on my own, and to really test each of them out without having to waste a full-size bottle. I learned so much this month and had a great time learning about each of the brands. The exfoliating cleanser, Bioderma serum, and the Paula's Choice gel are the products that really stood out to me! I haven't used these products for any length of time, but in the short bit that I have been using these, I have noticed a difference in my skin. The cleanser will last me a good bit since I won't use it every day, but I am going to be buying the other two products since they are doing wonders already for me. My husband was so excited to have three different hair products to try this month, one being his absolute favorite scrub from Christophe Robin. This month's box has a value of $86.68 which is great for an under $25 box. Not only is the value amazing, but I was able to test new products that, again, I might never know to try on my own and wouldn't know how beneficial they are to my skin. I love though that you can test the products without having a giant bottle that you might not need or want in the end. I really do feel as though I am entering this new phase where I want to really get my skin in shape, which is where boxes like this will come in handy to help discover what works, what I like, and brands!

Can I just say one thing about this box, as a lot of people are saying that It’s not as good of a value as Boxy, Ipsy, etc and I sort of disagree. While these products are smaller sizes, you can be assured that they are the same, quality ingredients and made in the the same place as the full sized products they are selling. For me personally, I’d like to try the REAL deal, see if I like it and then buy it as opposed to getting some full sized, cheaply made product that may or may not be healthy. That’s just my opinion though. I guess it depends what your intent is with getting the subscription boxes.

Why are these reviews so late??? I mean you received this box a month ago. Do you not make money off this box? I mean it’s crazy. Don’t you want to encourage people to buy the box your reviewing? How can they, when it’s a month late?

MSA has dropped the ball. I barely come on here anymore. I used to check this site three times a day.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I received this box almost at the start of February, we also need to photograph and test all of these products. So there will always be a bit of a delay just factoring in processing time, and allowing a thoughtful review of each product through testing.

Thanks for the reply, Taryn. I’ve been curious about the review process. I was not tempted to purchase this box based on spoilers, but after reading your review, I think I would have enjoyed it. Reading the reviews that come too late to order a specific box does help me to know which brands and products I’d like to try if I see them in other boxes and helps me discern if a sub box company would be a good choice for me, so I’m happy to read the late reviews, but I do wish some could be more timely.

i have tried beautyfix before and it doesnt seem bad but I cant get over the other boxes out there that are a way better deal

I love Coola sunscreen which I discovered in this sub. Their travel spray saved my makeup at an event in Florida. Thank you for sharing.

I am loving the sunscreen still! I can’t wait to use it in the summer to see how it holds in the humid weather.

I literally paused and reread several times – “my husband has very long fine hair that is color treated” to realize that I couldn’t even picture this with men in my circle having either “military regulation” hair or “bowling ball”. So, yes, I too would love to see the picture please. Thank you for the review & honest feedback about the products.

He is definitely one of a kind! I will absolutely share photos of him in my next review that he tests products for me.

I think it is super cute that you share your products with your husband. That is awesome. My longtime BF would never and I think that is so sad. So stuck in the rut of just soap and water or super basic hair care. Also on the bandwagon and would love to see your hubby’s hair

He has really opened up to more products over the years and I think saw improvement in both his skin and hair once he really started trying products with me. He even has developed his own skincare routine with products I have given him. I will for sure post photos of him more when he tests products for me!

Paula’s Choice products are the best. I have been using both the 8% AHA gel and their 2% BHA Exfoliant for over 10 years. I have never had a zit since and my skin is clear, smooth and healthy looking. I have tried many of their products over the years, but these 2, I recommend to everyone I know with troubled skin.

I am truly floored by how quickly this product improved my skin. This might be TMI as well but I sometimes notice the product smelling different when I apply it which I am wondering is just happening if I have a build-up? Either way, my dryness, and breakouts are so much better now.

The samples here look fine and there’s a good variety of them but aren’t they supposed to have at least one or two full size hero products? Like what they did for Dec with the full size Christophe Robin volume shampoo.

Reply ButtonReply

Taryn Lowman

Yes, it looks like having at least one full-size is common. This is my first time reviewing this sub so I’m not positive why there wasn’t one this month, but I will be on the lookout for next month.

I think that compared to almost every past Beautyfix box, this box is sad. The value is lower than usual and the samples are small. And I have seen that Christophe Robin sample (even though I really like the stuff) and the BioDerma sample thrown into Beautyfix boxes several times before. I’ve also seen a SkinCO serum (in a larger size) and rahua shampoo and conditioner samples.

And you can call this a $25 box all you want, but it’s a $30 box unless you stay subscribed, which I won’t, because these boxes are super lackluster lately. I really used to love BeautyFix. It used to be such a great deal.

Thanks so much for your feedback! This is my first time receiving this box so it was all pretty fresh and new for me.

I haven’t tried anything from this box yet. But I am disappointed that the value is below $100. They promise over $100 value.

I calculated differently when I got my box, and came up with a value of $100 and change. I don’t remember every difference, but I remember the rahua samples are sold individually for $5 each.

I’m really glad you enjoyed this box! On the other hand, I wasn’t very impressed by it. As you noted, the value of the products adds up to $86.68 – if I’m not mistaken, BeautyFIX markets its boxes as having values of over $100 each.

To be fair, I HATE the inflated values I see in a lot of these boxes (looking at you, 111 Skin and Avant), and I’m glad that BF doesn’t resort to that. BUT, based on the full-size superstar products BeautyFIX has had in the past, this box is kind of a miss for me.

Reply ButtonReply

Taryn Lowman

I totally understand that! I think since this was my first box and the products this month are doing wonders for my skin, I was really positive overall. I will really look at that value next month though to give it an honest retail value review.

I really wanna see your husband’s hair. I’m also really curious about the continued use of a few of the products.

Deal! I will share a photo of him in more of my reviews when he tests the products for me. Honestly, for me, the products this month are still holding up! I am already ordering more of the Bioderma and Paula’s Choice. My skin was really really bad for a while and once I started using both of those, the Paula’s Choice at night, and Bioderma twice a day, my skin is suddenly way less dry. It even looks healthier and has a glow that I haven’t seen to it since the summer.
