Macy's Beauty Box December 2020 Review

Each box comes with a fold-out card detailing the items included, a pro tip, and your $10 beauty coupon code to be used at Macy's stores or online.

Looks like we have a substitution! I will let you know which item that is as we dive into the review!

bareMinerals Mineralist Lipstick in 'Honesty', 0.06 oz – Estimated Value $10.00 (Buy a full-size 0.12 oz for $20.00)

I really love getting lipstick in boxes. Do I need more? Nope. Did I wear much in 2020? Eh, no. But they make me happy and when I have a bold lip on I just feel more like myself! Hopefully, this will be a big lipstick year? Anyway, I love this pink shade. It's a nice cool shade that still has a richness to it and I think this is going to look great on anyone. The finish is lightweight but pigmented and it is very smooth. The only complaint I have is about the scent of this formula, but it isn't really anything that would stop me from wearing this beauty.

This is a spring pink!

And I like it on a lot.

Peter Thomas Roth Cucumber Gel Mask, 14 mL - Estimated Value $5.13 (Buy a full-size 150 mL for $55.00)

This addition feels delightfully summery, and since I can't wait for warmer weather, I am feeling it. The ingredient list here is a good one: aloe, cucumber, pineapple extract, chamomille, and more! This isn't heavy enough for me to use in the winter months, but in the summer I just adore how cooling and soothing this green goo is. This is the perfect size for my purse so I can keep it on hand and apply it after some sunshine. It gives my skin a great level of hydration while being weightless. And it helps me lose that pesky redness that haunts me in the sunshine months.

Grande Cosmetics GrandeLIPS Plumping Liquid Lipstick Metallic Semi-Matte in 'Sparkling Sangria', size unknown (Buy a full-size 4 g for $25.00)

FYI: This is our substitute item! According to the book, the original item should have been a Grande Cosmetics Stay Put Lip Liner.

I am not a big lip liner fan, so I was totally fine with this substitution. This formula is pretty cool too! It is a plumping formula so it does have a little tingle to it, and it did make my lips feel plumper. The finish looked matte but never got super dry and it has this really cool metallic effect. I really liked this.

This shade feels a little more wintery.

I really like it on!

Kiehl's Calendula Petal-Infused Calming Mask, 14 mL - Estimated Value $6.30 (Buy a full-size 100 mL for $45.00)

This is a lightweight mask with little calendula petals inside. It is meant to give your skin a quick moisture boost in just 5 minutes. The big ingredients inside are aloe, calming Calendula extract, vitamin E, and other goodies. I tried this out by applying a thin layer to my clean face. I massaged it in circular motions with a special emphasis on my hairline since it has been super dry and gross lately. I waited the recommended 5 minutes then gently removed it with a warm wet towel. The whole experience was really nice! Though I am always going to need more and more hydration, this mask did a nice job of boosting my skin and making it feel smooth. There are some citrus oils in here that might turn some people off, but I found the mask itself really didn't smell like much of anything!

Shiseido Essential Energy Moisturizing Gel Cream, 0.35 oz - Estimated Value $9.88 (Buy a full-size 1.7 fl oz for $48.00)

I didn't love this stuff. I honestly just need more than a gel moisturizer on most days which wouldn't have been an automatic disqualifier for me, but this one also has my nemesis: alcohol denat. My dry skin just can't do it. This is going to be a much better choice for someone who has oilier skin or who doesn't mind alcohol in their skincare. It does have good stuff too, in fact, I was excited to see both caffeine and hyaluronic acid inside, but this just wasn't a product for me.

Viva La Juicy Le Bubbly Eau De Parfum, 0.05 fl oz - Estimated Value $1.46 (Buy 3.4 fl oz for $99.00)

This perfume smells literally exactly like you think it will: it is girly, fruity, and super young. The top notes are sharper and citrusy, but also kind of almondy? It then turns into a fruit plate with a side of sweet champagne. While this isn't my sort of scent at all, it certainly makes me think of carefree summer days in the beach house I don't own.

Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue Eau De Toilette, 0.05 fl oz - Estimated Value $1.58 (Buy 3.3 fl oz for $104.00)

Light Blue is a classic and a scent I have always loved but never purchased. This is the men's version of this cult-fave, which certainly should never stop anyone from wearing it, even if you aren't a guy. It is light and clean, with bright notes of juniper and citrus. It also packs some sexy incense and wood notes that I am digging and those give it a depth that compliments the tart citrus really beautifully.

Travel Bottle Set

This is probably a leftover from Macy's undelivered bags, and I can't fault them for that. And aren't we all hoping to need travel bottles soon? This little set is geared towards someone with a multi-step skincare routine (Hi, my name is Megan!). My fave inclusion is that little scoop! That is ideal for a kit like this and for a traveler who refuses to waste product.

Verdict: This Macy’s Beauty Box has an estimated value of $34.35 without the value of the Grande lip color (I have no clue what size the sample is!) and the travel bottles. It felt like a good value for a $15 bag to me. Sure, we had a substitution, which honestly isn't that uncommon with this subscription. But I love lip products so I am fine with that. And the travel set felt a little weird right now, but that is no fault of Macy's and I really like the set. All in all, I was satisfied with my first box back from this sub that we all thought was gone forever.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, but check this page to join the waitlist for January.

Value Breakdown: At $15 for this box, each of the 8 items has an average cost of $1.88.

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

I really wish we received the invisible liner… finally a couple of years ago, I started trying brighter lip colors that I was never comfortable to wear before. I like to use brush or fingers to create stain instead of full on look. I got GWP invisible liner from Birchbox and I have been using and it helps stay the color in place. I use one of the bottles for refillable hand sanitizer in my purse and use the pots for foil samples that has more than one use.

I haven’t received my December box yet. I cancelled on Nov 16, so I knew I’d still get December and was looking forward to it. Early in Dec I received an email stating there would be a shipping delay. After seeing Megan’s review, I hope my December box will still show up. I guess I’ll be calling their customer service number if it hasn’t arrived by Monday.

I also canceled technically after their official cutoff for December, but still wasn’t charged for and didn’t receive the box. I was definitely happy about that, though. I guess they started processing the cancellations faster.

I cancelled mine in December. I didn’t receive the December box nor I was charged for it.

If you cancelled in November I don’t think you will get this box.

Ugh I thought this was the Allure review! Sorry!

Aarjullor

Exact same thing happened to me, email and all. I was looking into it today, before I saw there was a review up. I just didn’t have it in me to call them today. I do hope it shows up, just for that bareMinerals lipstick.

Why are all these reviews going up so late? Reviews, spoilers it’s all late.

Hoppy

All my December subs were late. It’s not their fault that the reviews are going to be late.

You do know all parcels and most of mail is arriving late for the past month.

As I was reading this, my January Macy’s box was delivered, and at the exact same time got an email saying that the shipping of my January box has been delayed. I understand the complications of the pandemic, but they really need to get it together. Also, the Grande products have become the new eyeko black eyeliner. It seems like there’s one in every box, and I can’t use any of them.

Got the same email, but my tracking is saying that my box will be here Monday

hmm interesting, the macy’s bottles seems really cheap, i like the idea of the Calendula cream from Khiels though! Just not sure if it’s worth it just for that. A lot of big brands are following the subscription model but leave it to the small businesses! it just seems tacky when places like walmart, target, macys, etc keep on making these random boxes. give us the indie brands!

I almost wish I’d grabbed this for the two lipsticks! I like the two Grande lipsticks I have, and that shade looks nice. They are pretty pigmented so I often mix them with a balm for something a little more natural.

The Peter Thomas Roth cucumber mask would be a miss for me, though. I got it in a set of masks (from Sephora maybe?) and it’s among my least favorite. I have pretty dry skin, though. For me it went on sticky and wasn’t that pleasant to wear. I used up the sample over a few weeks, trying it every few days, and it seemed to hydrate the lower layers of skin, but made the surface layer rougher and dryer. It actually made my pores look larger and increased fine lines over time.

It did, however,do a good job pulling impurities and black heads to the surface and leaving my face cleaner.

Thanks for the great review, Megan!

This month’s items were okay, imo…but I missed that lip liner! I don’t use them much either, but this one was supposed to be an ‘invisible’ liner that goes on clear and is used to keep your lipstick in place so no feathering takes place. Isn’t that cool?! I went to the Grande website and the product is discontinued, so I have a feeling it was available when these bags were initially planned but no longer carried by the time Macy’s actually got this month out. I understand these things happen during a pandemic! They did a decent job putting in a Grande replacement–mine was a pinky-nude and I liked it!

I received this Box and liked everything in it (some items more than others) but when I went to use my $10 coupon(very clearly stated) on a $15 item it was only good for $5. I called and was told “well, I guess it was only good for $5 then.” Macy’s CS has really gone downhill in the last year.

Reply ButtonReply

Aidan

Macy’s CS has always been horrible. I’ve had issues in the past and they have no clue or ability to fix things. One month I didn’t get my insert. They couldn’t do anything but would give me a 10 or 15% off coupon good on anything BUT beauty (argh!). I’ve had more than one conversation when I ended the call in tears of frustration. That being said I found that my November coupon marked $5 redeemed for $10 and the opposite happened in December. I have my advent calendar one to use still and I’ve heard others have had issues.

Also, in case you want to double dip you can use the code online and then redeem in store too. There have been a lot of months when I use the coupon twice.

I couldn’t get my advent coupon to work online or in store. I tried online yesterday again and it worked. I think Macys fixed the issues after all the complaints. So hopefully it works for you

Ah, the one thing I wanted after the initial spoilers was the D&G Light Blue, because I love the perfume, and even that turned out to be the men’s version.

Glad I unsubscribed in time 😊, I am not sure I would have used anything in this box at all…

Interesting bag! 2 lipsticks, 2 perfumes, and 3 gel moisturizers/masks, and of course that odd travel set.

Megan, what exactly does alcohol denat. do to your skin? I know your skin is incredibly dry, but does that ingredient cause a specific reaction or just increase dryness?

I reacted to some sort of product well over a month ago and I can’t seem to get rid of the irritated, red bumpy patches that popped up on one side (only one side) of my face. It’s driving me nuts because I like to be heavy handed with my skincare and now I have to tread lightly.

I made the mistake of using a glycolic toner last night and holy heaven did my face burn and sting. Now I know how it feels to have super sensitive skin!
