Birchbox 'Treat Your Hair' Kit Review

Here is the info sheet for the box.

R + Co. TELEVISION Perfect Hair Masque, 5 oz – Retail Value $42.00

A full-size hair mask? Worth more than the cost of the box? From a well-known brand? This kit was already a winner for me at the first product – especially after I tried it and liked the formula. This is more of a ~conditioner~ than a mask for my specific hair care needs, but the thick texture adds a nice boost of moisture and shine that all hair types will benefit from.

Bumble and Bumble. Hairdresser’s Invisible Oil Mask, 2 oz – Retail Value $15.00

I’m no stranger to the Invisible Oil line from Bumble and bumble, and my hair responds well to their formulas. The main drawback of this mask is how much is necessary – per the brand, medium-to-coarse/thick hair should “apply a palm-size amount from roots to ends.” I did just that and had softer and more moisturized hair, but I probably used about a third of the tube. The full-size version of this mask is probably better suited for those who have fine hair, but this travel-sized tube will get used up completely by me.

Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind Avocado + Kiwi Mega Moisture Superfood Mask, 1 oz – Estimated Value $4.50 (buy the 8 oz version for $36.00)

I’m a fan of Briogeo (they’re a black-owned haircare brand with great formulas and fun packaging), and this is their newest deep conditioning mask. It’s made with superfoods like avocado, kiwi, and spinach (if you couldn’t tell by the name), and it’s nourishing without being too heavy. I do think this mask is better suited for my dry, curly hair than their 'Don’t Despair, Repair' mask, but I use this more as other people would use conditioner than as a once-a-week mask.

Christophe Robin Regenerating Mask with Rare Prickly Pear Seed Oil, 1.7 oz - Estimated Value $14.49 (buy the 8.33 oz version for $71.00)

I was prepared for this to not work out – so prepared that I brought a backup hair mask with me into the shower. What can I say – usually hair masks that instruct things like “Apply a small amount” and “leave in for two to three minutes” just does not jive with my hair type. Boy was I wrong – I was ~shook~ when I stepped out of the shower. My hair was silky soft and so smooth, and it felt hydrated without being weighed down. Combing through my normally tangled curls was a breeze, too. This is a pricy hair product, but it just might truly be worth the money.

Oribe Gold Lust Transformative Masque, 0.5 oz - Estimated Value $6.60 (buy the 5 oz version for $66.00)

I’m always happy to try a new Oribe product out – the brand is so expensive! Like all Oribe products, this smells amazing, which means you should probably skip this one if you’re sensitive to fragrance in your haircare. This has some interesting botanical extracts like edelweiss, watermelon, bergamot, and jasmine, and using this in the shower added a bit of luxury to my mundane routine. I didn’t love this enough to feel the need to lust over the full-size, but it was a nice conditioning treat for my hair.

Amika Flash Instant Shine Mask, 1 oz – Estimated Value $3.73 (buy the 6.7 oz version for $25.00)

I love this mask. While you can use it on its own, my preferred way of using it is mixing it with another hair mask like the Amika Soulfood mask or the Briogeo Be Gentle, Be Kind mask that came in this kit. It’s not super hydrating, but it does add a noticeable shine to my hair. Mixing it with a more hydrating mask gives me hair that looks like I just left the salon after paying extra for a deep conditioning treatment.

Davines The Renaissance Circle Hair Mask, 1.69 oz – Retail Value $9.50

This mask was actually terrible. I don’t know where it went wrong, but it actually made my hair drier after I used it and the texture was more difficult to work with, too. I like Davines, but apparently, their hair masks just don’t work for me.

Verdict: This kit had a true failure (the Davines mask), a true must-worthy mask that had me itching to click “add to cart” on the full-size (Christopher Robin), and a lot of great masks in between – including a full-size one! This set truly felt like a treat for my hair, which I would say lives up to the name quite nicely. Value-wise, everything in this kit adds up to $95.82, which is just shy of the promised $100 value.

I reread this review after seeing your December favorites. I got this kit, and am slowly working my way through it. And you are so right! I LOVE LOVE the Christophe Robin hair mask (and coincidentally HATE HATE the Davines mask – that one was truly awful!)
I was incredibly disappointed in the Oribe. I even used the accompanying shampoo. No luck. But the R + co is nice. Amika & Brigeo were the next favorites. As someone who’s on makeup & skincare overload, I am so glad I picked up this box!

It says at the bottom of the post that it is no longer available … bummer, I was going to try it based on the review!

Yes, unfortunately it’s gone. It was 30% off Blk Friday and then a couple days later was 30% plus 40% off.
