The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar September 2020 Review

Charcoal Infused Cotton Swabs by KOL - Listed Value $12.00

Is it just me or is everything infused with charcoal lately?! These cotton swaps are mainly for beauty touchups and can be used to remove nail polish. So you can use it to clean your lipstick line, eyeliner, or a faulty mascara smudge on your cheek in one quick swab. I can't say that I have a huge use for these every day, but they will be great to have on hand!

Gel Nail Strips by NanaCoco - Retail Value $10.00

I have received a few nail strips here and there in various boxes. Each time I am left wondering how I could possibly have applied them wrong, but without fail they always look so awful on me. For me, they take a while to get them on correctly, they are hard to find that perfect fit for each nail, and getting them smooth, shaped, and looking flush to my nail is so tricky. What am I doing wrong?! I really took my time with this set and followed the instructions, but I still was left with not so great looking sticker nails that reminded me of when I was a little girl. Inside this set are 22 double-ended strips that are waterproof and should last up to 14 days and a nail file to help with the application. I love having painted nails, so while these weren't for me in the end, I am always game to trying and retrying new products that I might end up loving!

Facial Polish by BonBon, 3.5 oz. - Retail Value $28.00

The results of this product really surprised me! At first, I wasn't too blown away by this facial polish when reading the label on the container, then when I took them out of the box the heart-shaped polish seemed so small. I thought that these couldn't possibly do much to help my skin. When I applied it nothing really came off of the polish, but I did notice that the scrub inside started to create a light exfoliation. I let the thin layer sit for about 5 minutes before rinsing. When I woke up in the morning I was amazed at how smooth my skin felt! It was really glowing, but the texture was like butter which was amazing since I didn't even really feel like I got much exfoliation when I applied the polish! Each polish is made with Aloe Vera, Peppermint, Shavegrass, Blackcurrant Fruit, Bidens Pilosa, Cocoa Seed Butter, Shea Butter, Sunflower Seed Oil, making it great to use multiple times a week. These polishes are hand-crafted in small batches to help cleanse, hydrate, moisturize, and nourish your skin. I am totally sold on these, and am even going to buy some for my two sisters-in-law for Christmas!

Blemish Drying Lotion by Zabana Essentials, 1 oz. - Retail Value $12.00

This little bottle looks cool and it works! This lotion is organic, 100% vegan, and is made in small batches using natural ingredients. You can use this on blemishes to reduce inflammation and redness to leave you with healed skin. Simply dap with a cotton swab a small amount on a blemish and leave overnight. It is made of French green clay, moringa leaf, burdock root, aloe vera, and witch hazel leaf all to help calm any skin irritations you might have. I haven't had a ton of blemishes lately, thank the stars, but I did have a few around my nose area that I was able to spot treat with this lotion. In the morning, I woke up to see that while they were still there, they looked a lot smaller and less red. A win all around in my book!

Blush Kit by Mai Couture - Retail Value $18.00

I was really happy with this blush kit! I have received a few blush sets like this before and have never been too thrilled with the application and staying power. However, this kit really sets itself apart because it comes with a sponge applicator with 5 adhesives that allow you to easily apply the blush without the mess or struggling with the blush sheets. The kit also has a mirror and came with 50 blush sheets. The sheets apply a super light and natural pink color with a little shine to it. I really loved the natural look these gave me while still giving me that pink glow I love!

Fruit Pigmented Pomegranate Oil Anti-Aging Lipstick by 100% Pure - Retail Value $30.00

I love a red lip! This lipstick just glides right on and provided full coverage with hardly any work. It did bleed a little which you can see in the photo above, but I was able to clean it up easily and didn't have any issues wearing it throughout the morning. I might get a lip liner to match to help with the line bleeding a bit because I really am in love with this color! When I applied it I could feel this cooling sensation, almost like I was applying a minty balm. My lips felt so hydrated! The lipstick is made with antioxidant-rich fruit pigments, pomegranate oil, and shea butter. I was a little surprised by the price of this lipstick though! While I really loved how it looks, the staying power, and how it made my lips feel, I couldn't imagine spending that much on a lipstick.

Verdict: The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar was filled with some big hits and some small misses. I continue to learn that gel sticker nails are just not for me, which is what I found again with this month's set. I think I am missing a step or a trick on how to make them look good when I apply them. Any pointers? The cotton swabs are something I will definitely use, but nothing that felt overly special. The blush kit was really great compared to others I have received, and I will absolutely be using them (they are currently in my diaper bag when I need a quick touch-up)! The lipstick was the big-ticket item this month, and while I am obsessed with the color and feel, I can't imagine paying that much for lipstick on my own. So bonus I guess that I got to try the brand through this box! The facial polish was the shining star for me this month, I was honestly blown away by how it made my skin feel the morning after I used one polish. I felt like I had a major exfoliation without really doing much and without feeling like I stripped my skin. I calculated a retail value of around $110, and at $31.95 a month for this box, while that is a lot lower than the value from last month, I would say that is still an incredible deal. So while I wasn't totally in love with everything, I got to try new products that I wouldn't normally buy for myself. This is the perfect beauty box to indulge in for some at-home pampering, the perfect gift to yourself or your fellow beauty lovers!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, if you sign up today, you'll get the November box with the theme "Fresh", which ships November 15 - 20.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $31.95 with free shipping and I calculated a total value of $110, which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Cotton Swaps: $3.48
  • Nail Strips: $2.90
  • Facial Polish: $8.13
  • Drying Lotion: $3.48
  • Blush Kit: $5.22
  • Lipstick: $8.71

That lipstick is gorgeous, but wow, the price! That’s more than Nars or something.

I received those nail stickers in another box but haven’t got around to trying them, because I am sure that the same thing will happen when I try to apply them. I guess I’ll give it a go eventually, but I don’t even like the feel of a couple of coats of polish. Do those stickers feel thick or noticeable?

I think that is what I don’t love about them, they feel weird to me on my nails and they look like stickers. I would rather take the time to polish.

Hey Taryn! As far as the nail stickers go, I’ve seen people on YouTube use a nail trimmer to cut off the excess so they actually fit to the size of their nails. I don’t really bother with my nails so I’m not sure if it works, but maybe worth a shot if you get another one in a box.

For the nail stickers… select a sticker slightly smaller than your actual nail (cut it with a scissors if you have to), apply first at the base of your nail while smoothing it as you lay it flat on the nail (like a sheet of lamination paper if you’re old enough to remember ths! that you flatten from the base to the tip), then file off the excess. It looks like you’re selecting the wrong size and also trying to make them fit length wise by lining up the base and the tip at the same time, resulting in wrinkles.

Thanks so much for the tips! I will give that a try next time! I will say, as a Mom of two young kids, I don’t know if I have the time to do all of that to each nail.

I got this exact box and cancelled my subscription. That’s how bad I was disappointed in this box. Terrible.
