Tarte recently had a Create Your Own Beauty Kit sale that let you pick 4 items of your choice for $35! That's a price I couldn't pass up for products from a brand I love!

Tarte Create Your Own Kit August 2020 inside box

About twice per year, Tarte will offer a "7 items for $63" sale, and it usually has you choose one item from a few different categories. For example, they usually offer one item from an eye category, one mascara, one from a face/complexion category, etc. This sale was different, though! They just offered a whole page with all sorts of categories and products and you could pick any 4 for $35! This freedom was nice - I could have chosen 4 foundations if I wanted to! Or 4 lipsticks! I liked that flexibility.

FYI - this box is no longer available for purchase.

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

Tarte Limited Edition Pearly Girl Vegan Teeth Whitening Pen - Retail Value $22

I didn't know Tarte had a teeth whitening pen, and when I looked over the rave reviews for it, I knew I had to try it! I just (finally! due to delayed shipping right now) got my kit this week so I've only tried it once, but I feel confident I saw an improvement in the whiteness of my teeth right away. I'm looking forward to trying it regularly. The formula is vegan and clear of major "yucky" ingredients, breaks up stains and spots with a patented calcium complex, and only has natural flavors (it's minty!). Other than the apparent effectiveness, my favorite part of this product is how quick and easy it is: brush onto your teeth, and smile for 15 seconds while it sets. Then just avoid eating or drinking anything for 15 minutes. And it's gentle - you can apply up to 4 times a day and several reviews on Tarte's site noted having no issues with sensitive teeth. At a $22 cost, I could see myself repurchasing this, too.

Tarte Big Ego Sketch & Set Brow Pencil & Tinted Gel, Ash Blonde - Retail Value $24

I love a good brow pencil. This product has both a retractable brow pencil and a tinted brow gel together. Personally, I don't think I am a person who needs both at the same time. The pencil is thin and easily fills out my brows and looks natural enough. I also like the tinted gel and can manage a good result with that on its own as well. Both at the same time is just a darker/more defined look than I usually go for, but that's obviously personal preference! It has a small learning curve - the first time I used the gel (over top of the pencil) I accidentally had a huge glob of the gel on my brow and it was so dark and smeary and I had to wipe it off and do some damage control! I managed to figure it out, even if they were colored in a little more intensely than usual. This morning I tried the tinted gel again, and I wiped off the excess gel before applying and it worked so much better.

Tarte Maracuja Tinted Moisturizer, 10 N Fair Neutral- Retail Value $29

Another new-to-me Tarte product, and another winner! I'm pretty pale and I usually have a hard time finding a matching shade in tinted moisturizers. I snagged the palest shade they have, which is "Fair Neutral." Usually, I need a shade that's a little warmer, but it was the only "fair" shade (the next shade was a "fair-light," and "light" is the next shade). I was surprised to see that this works well for me! It's only a hair more neutral than my complexion, but with the formula being a light coverage it really isn't that noticeable. The formula also hydrates well, like it's supposed to, which is awesome for my dry skin. I am really excited about this product because it is light and perfect for every day while I'm mostly just at home! I can get an easy, more even complexion without having to schlep on a full-coverage foundation when I'm not really going out for the day.

Tarte Tartelette Tease Clay Palette - Retail Value $19

This palette is great! It's a small size, but it really has all the shadows I really need day-to-day. My general "formula" for an eye look is to use a mid-toned color all over the lid, light color to high light brow bone and inner lid/corner, and then blend a darker shade in the outer corner. Each row of this palette has a light, mid, and darker toned shadow that goes together really well. The top row is warmer tones and the bottom row is cooler, so you can use them as trios of shadows for your look, or you can definitely still mix and match any of these. The formula is consistent with what I've come to know from Tarte: decent pigmentation, but a little powdery (make sure to tap your brush before applying to prevent excess product from falling onto your cheeks!).

Top row of shades, from left to right: Whisper, Crush, Heartbreaker. Bottom row: Wink, First Kiss, BFF.

Tarte Create Your Own Kit August 2020 swatches

Here's swatches of everything! The eyebrow pencil and tinted moisturizer are at the top, and then the eye shadow palette: Whisper, Crush, Heartbreaker, Wink, First Kiss, BFF.

Here I am, post teeth-whitening pen use, and I'm wearing the tinted moisturizer, brow pencil + gel, and eye palette (I used the top, warmer row/trio of shadows). I'll also note that I chose to use a Tarte mascara (the Tarteist Lash Paint Mascara) that I already owned to complete the look. I'm happy!

The Verdict: These Tarte Create Your Own Kits are not to be missed! They're one of my all-time favorite beauty box releases. I liked the flexibility to choose 4 of any kind of item, as opposed to the usual restraints of choosing 1 item per category. As always, choosing what you get makes it risk-free and even more worth the cost that's already a steal. I love that I can choose to use this discount to try new-to-me Tarte products without risking the full-price, or can take the opportunity to stock up on my favorite products. And they're all full-size! The value is fantastic for the products you get. This box cost me $41 total ($35 + $6 shipping), and my items add up to a retail value of $94. I am absolutely happy with that! Especially because I got to try some new products from a brand I know I love.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you order today? No, Tarte only offers these Create Your Own Kits a couple of times a year (the 7 items for $63 version is usually in May and November)!

Value Breakdown: At $35 for this box, here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Teeth Whitener: $8.19
  • Brow pencil/gel: $8.94
  • Tinted Moisturizer: $10.80
  • Eye Palette: $7.07

Alternatively, the $35 breaks down into $8.75 per item (Or, including shipping, the $41 total breaks down to $10.25 per item)

Oh man! I wish I’d paid more attention to this. I assumed it was like the other build your kit promo with categories to choose from. If this comes around I’m jumping on it.

Great choices Haley. What a lovely “natural” look! And I’m definitely gonna have to try that mascara. It’s fabulous!

I wondered if MSA was going to cover this! 🙂

How do you recommend applying a tinted moisturizer, Haley?

I like this 4-for-35 deal SO MUCH better than the $65 build-a-bag. I didn’t end up with any “filler” stuff that was something I didn’t want, or even just okay. I hope Tarte ends up doing this sale again! I’d be hard-pressed to resist!

I got:
– SEA Water foundation in Fair Beige (not expired lol)
– Double Duty Beauty eyeliner in Electric Blue
– Lip Lingerie Matte tint in Pure
– Sugar Rush Vacay Day perfume

I also bought an empty magnetic palette to get free shipping + redeemed a points item & a birthday gift item.

Well, I actually just applied this with my hands! And I was happy with how it worked out! I’ve found fingers work well with tinted moisturizers and BB creams and such because of the lighter coverage. The items you picked sound awesome! And oh man, I missed the birthday gift! Happy Birthday!

I apply most of my makeup with my hands, so that works for me, lol!

Stephanie

Beware, a lot of people received expired foundations in their last box. Big thread on reddit.

Thank you for this! Mine is not expired, thankfully!

I agree. Mines thankfully came with 2021 dates.

I got this. I ended up getting all foundation products and I do like the tinted moisturizer. I also like the shape tape glow wand.
