Happily September 2020 Review

What a whirlwind! Can you believe it is the end of September already? I sure can't! This time of year is extremely busy for us, as our garden produce is in need of attention, hunting season starts, I go back to work, and the kids are back in school. This year has been extra crazy with COVID thrown into the mix. With all of the uncertainty, I have noticed an increase in anxiety, so this date night box came at the perfect time to help alleviate some of that and add a component of fun into the craziness! While our date was pushed back a bit due to my husband being out of state and his father ending up in the hospital, it made it all the more necessary! Unlike last month, the kids were tucked snug in their beds, and Dustin and I got to relax, unwind, and enjoy each other's company. Read below to see how this month's date compared to last month's chaos!

This month the color theme was this bright and cheery seafoam green with hints of yellow and the included card welcomed us to our date. While we didn't exactly create a blanket fort, we did make a snuggly nest on the couch and enjoyed the tasty fondue dessert. I can say that this date was a lot more my style than the sushi!!

On the opposing side, we have a list of all the contents included in the box. This month we received a custom playlist, conversation starters, a fondue kit, a game, mini booklet, and bingo cards.

This month's custom playlist was fire!!!! It included Tom Petty, AC/DC, Van Morrison, The Rolling Stones, and ZZ Top!! It's like it was made for us!!! I have teased about Dustin only liking old country in the past, and while that's his number one choice in the music department, AC/DC is his second fave, so we were both jamming to this playlist!

Last month we didn't receive a set of conversation starters, and I have to say that I missed this little component. While it doesn't seem like much, having these questions printed on a card gives me an edge when I ask them to my husband because when written down he can't just roll his eyes and change the subject...they are here...and they are printed....he MUST answer them hahaha!

This little card focused on "feeling the love" and had us make a comfy spot in the living room to have the perfect space to laugh the night away. While we didn't grab all the blankets in our house, we did make a snuggly nest on the love seat where we enjoyed cuddling after a long day's work!

Fuzzy pillows and soft blankets make a rom-com date night extra special!

Rom-Com Bingo

Hooray for rom-com Bingo! This month we received two Bingo cards that you play while watching your favorite romantic comedy, while we didn't play with high stakes as the card suggests (loser does dishes for a week) we enjoyed just playing for fun. They recommend using your favorite candies as markers, so we used star chocolates, all while enjoying "The Proposal."

Drip Drop Game

This month we received a card game to pair with our fondue adventure. This game was created on a tradition to make your fondue experience extra sweet. If you drip your fondue on yourself, the table, or your honey, or drop anything in the pot, you have to draw from the "Drip-Drop" pile and follow the prompt. When you dip anything into the fondue, you draw a card from the "Dip" pile and follow the prompt. This game was really fun and quite romantic! The dares weren't anything crazy, and the questions are easy to answer, but aren't typically things we would sit around and talk about had the game not mentioned it, and I have to say I felt emotionally satisfied after playing this game!

You + Me Mini Booklet

Here we have a you + me mini-booklet which contains a few questions and a coupon code for 30% off, but I'm not quite sure what you do with it. Do you write in here under each question? The questions are cute, but I don't feel it's anything I would need to write down...I might have to check out the full version online to get a better idea of what its purpose is.

Fondue Kit

The main item this month is our fondue kit. We received a bag of chocolate, marshmallows, two Rice Krispies treats, and a bag of sprinkles. The set of instructions described how to make our fondue, and suggested using our favorite dippers to have a sweet treat with our rom-com. If you don't own a fondue pot, the instructions recommend using a saucepan over low heat!

Look at my shiny fondue pot...can you tell this is the second time in 15 years that I've used it? We had a great time dipping our strawberries and sweets into the chocolate! I'm not sure what kind of chocolate it was, but boy was it yummy!! I do wish I would have made half of a batch though - this made enough for a few date nights, as we had a lot of excess!

The Verdict: Happily was much more my style this month! I am a sucker for a Hallmark movie, and although my husband prefers action movies, he will take one for the team and let me pick a real sappy movie every once and a while. The fondue was a really fun concept for this box - with the chocolate being amazing. I only wish we would have received a bunch more goodies for dipping! I also feel they could have sent special candies for Bingo markers. The curation this month was well thought out, and the date itself was really fun. We spent a lot of time asking each other questions, goofing around, and just enjoying ourselves without a lot of preplanned fuss. Like I have stated before, for $39.95 I would like to see more physical items in the box, but I feel the thoughtfulness is heading in the right direction, so hopefully, we will see improvement in next month's box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No. According to Happily's FAQ, boxes ship on the 10th of every month, so you'd likely receive the October box.

I believe I’ve read every one of the reviews for this box. I’ve seen comments on how much these reviews are enjoyed. That said, no one seems to like the box from a cost-to-value standpoint. As MSA pays for this, I’m wondering if there is another box that could be reviewed for those interested in this type of content as this one doesn’t seem to be improving?

I think when it says MSA pays for it I think it means the reviewer themselves pay for it so maybe the reviewer just enjoys the box even though the value is terrible.

Oh my gosh, this is such an enormous waste of $40. I’m all for fun boxes like this, but $40 for $3 worth of food and some paper?
