BREO BOX Review - Fall 2020

BREO BOX recently stopped including the heavier wooden boxes and they've switched to a more lightweight but still super giftable box with a lid that can be reused. This quarter, it's light blue. It also comes in a drawstring dust bag, inside of an outer cardboard box so that the nice box is kept clean.

They've also recently switched to a more informative booklet to focus on each item included for a more in-depth look at how to use them.

Smart Loq - Listed Value $69.00

This little lock is pretty cool and a lot more heavy-duty than I expected. I downloaded the suggested app and then went through the steps of scanning in my thumbprint. The whole process was pretty straightforward and felt weirdly high-tech. My only issue is that I don't know exactly where to use this lock. It does need to be charged before it hits 10% just so you can be sure you can keep on using it. That makes me a little worried if I choose to use it somewhere far from an electrical outlet. Either way, this thing is cool, and totally the sort of gadget I would expect to see in this subscription. If you also have one, where do you use it??

Freshetech Light Therapy Lamp - Listed Value $59.00

I always get what Will has termed "The Snow Sads". I am originally from Tennessee and though I did see flurries as a kid, the long winters of Pennsylvania are still something I struggle with. He has been threatening to get me a sun lamp for years now, but Breo Box has us covered. This year has already been so up and down that I was worried about that rollercoaster of feelings combining with the winter blues. Hopefully, this lamp can help! It is UV free, has three brightness settings, and a built-in timer. I tried it using the dimmest setting because the two stronger ones are BRIGHT. There is something weirdly comforting about the glow from this light. Maybe it reminds me of a nightlight as a kid? I don't know. There is a very handy stand on the back that folds out so you can set this up to shine on you at your desk, on the couch, wherever. The included cord easily plugs into a normal outlet for easy use.

If you aren't someone that would maybe need something like this, I will say that it also makes a truly excellent lightbox for tracing purposes!

Here it is on the dimmest setting...

And here is the brightest!

YETI Rambler Mug - Retail Value $24.99

Will has a really, really random work schedule. He is on call for most of the week and two of those days are guaranteed super early mornings. As the weather turns colder, I always like to have his coffee situation set up for an easy start for him, because I plan on staying in bed as long as I can! That means lots of travel mugs that keep his coffee HOT. A YETI has been on his wishlist recently so I was ticked that this handsome navy mug appeared in the box this quarter. If I am being super picky, I could have done without the Breo Box branding. Makes it feel more like swag than a really great product. But Will doesn't seem to care because this cup keeps his brew hot for hours and it is machine washable.

OXO Good Grips Sweep & Swipe Laptop Cleaner - Retail Value $9.99

This is a handy little tool for anyone with a laptop they like to eat lunch over (guilty). One end has a brush that slides out top brush away any crumbs or dirt that might be on your keyboard and the red end is a microfiber top you can wipe along your screen to remove any dust or fingerprints. This was immediately stashed in my desk drawer!

OXO Good Grips Punctual Egg Timer with Piercer - Retail Value $19.99

I really, really love a good hardboiled egg. I eat them a little less often now that we no longer have chickens, but I still whip them up for egg salad or just a high-protein snack. Boiling the perfect egg has always been a challenge, and I know most of us have our own tricks that mostly work. Mine was to put the eggs into the cold water, allow them to head up with the water, then turn it off and let them sit in the hot water for like an hour. Sure, it worked, and the yolks were dreamy, but it took FOREVER. Flash boil them and you get grey yolks. This little timer does things a little differently. First, the top drops down to expose a very sharp point that creates a hole in the egg. You can then drop it in boiling water and use the little slider to set the size of the egg and a second slider for how 'done' you like your yolk. Both of these factors combine into the perfect time for your egg to boil. Simply press the timer button, and wait.

These eggs peeled like a dream! That used to be such a nightmare with farm fresh eggs. The one drawback is that my eggs weren't really smooth. The water gets inside the egg through the puncture and creates a little bit of a bubbled effect. I could probably lessen this by boiling less aggressively. The yolks though? Perfection.

Tooletries Reusable Hook Tile -Retail Value $9.00

We only have one hook in our shower currently, which leads to a sort of low-key competition over who gets to hang stuff on it. This second hook will help with that and will give both Will and I designated spots for our loofas and cloths. This hook is on a silicone tile that holds up to 4 pounds! Simply peel and stick. It really couldn't be easier.

Tooletries GoBrush - Listed Value $18.00

This toothbrush is ideal for travel since the head is completely enclosed inside the body when not in use. It's a great alternative to a ziplock bag! I wasn't sure how to open the brush itself but when I twisted the body it shot out like some sort of dental jack in the box! It is spring-loaded to pop up or collapse and the spring is powerful. While I think the suggested retail is high for what this is, I do have a trip coming up next month and you bet I am excited to take this along.

Trip Wipes Foaming Hand Wash - Estimated Value $10 (buy two here for $20.00, on sale for $16.00)

My last item is a smaller bottle of foaming hand wash. I thought this was a waterless foam, but from the directions, it does need to be washed off. Generally, when I am washing my hands there is soap around, so I think this might have been better if it was sanitizer or a waterless wash, but since this is plant-based and environmentally friendly it might be a great choice for camping. It smells really nice too, like sweet clementines and oranges.

Verdict: BREO BOX is really unlike any of my other subscriptions, but I think that is a good thing! It always has a mix of really fun and useful gadgets and products. There were some really great things this quarter that I loved, mainly the sun light, the YETI mug, and the egg timer. We have used all of these multiple times so far. I also thought the lock was really neat and the laptop cleaner and silicone hook have both been put to use. The toothbrush and the soap were both smaller additions, but both were well designed and functional. If I guesstimate based on the values provides combined with the values I could verify, the total value of this box lands somewhere around $220.00. That isn't a massive deal for $159, but it does save you around $60. I do feel like value-wise, this curation needed another beefy item, but I also enjoyed this box a lot and if you do too, this would be a fun splurge!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, but these sell out quickly!

Value Breakdown: At $159 for this box, you're paying roughly $19.88 per item.

Megan you must put a wake up light alarm clock to your Christmas wish list. There are several brands mine is the Philips. I only use it when the days shorten I hate waking up when it is still dark out.

I love when the reviews are early as that’s what gets me to get the box or not… I thought that was what the majority thought🤷‍♀️

Branding the Yeti mug with the Breo logo. Yuck ! I generally really enjoy my Breo box and have been a subscriber for a long time but , no no no to that branding. Breo if you’re listening , please don’t go down that road. I would have loved to gift that mug ( Clever gifting is one of the main reason I subscribe to Breo.) but don’t want to do that now. No thanks! I agree it seems like swag. Otherwise , some stand-out items for me such as the lock and the lamp!

Great review but omg, where did you get your bedding?!

Megan K.

Opalhouse at Target is EVERYTHING!! Just make sure to only pick the 100% cotton sheets. ♥️

Alex

Oh thank you!

Michelle

Oh! They branded the Yeti?! YUCK. That does feel like branding SWAG. Totally takes down the value.

Natlovesmelody

I like the branding! Breo box is one of my favorites and seeing it on the YETI is a sweet reminder of subscription boxes😁

I’m looking for the lock as I recently moved and need to visit my storage often. I’ll keep an eye out for that to be listed. Thanks

Sorry to those who are averse to “Negative Nancies” BUT…the overall value isn’t there, and it would make much sense to just but the one or two items that you actually want from this lack lustre curation. I’m sorry, but a timer with a pin is not worth $20 – but a single egg cooker would be worth it (although I do have a $20 egg cooker that will cook just one egg, so there are many “single egg cookers” available in that price range). The lovely boxes used to add to the value, but they are now gone. This is becoming a sad. sad box that probably won’t continue for much longer.

Reply ButtonReply

Angie

I had no idea they had single egg cookers. I had one that could do 6 or 7 and it was great but a pain to drag out for one. I might add this to my Christmas list.

C02

Doesn’t cook eggs. It’s a timer.

Boxy

Get yourself a small egg maker and it will change your life. I got one on clearance by Dash and it makes perfect hard boiled eggs in about 5 minutes with virtually no clean up.

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Ooooh I might have to. Will brought home one of those Dash mini waffle makers and I use it to make Chaffles (which are life-changing, although messy!)

Reply ButtonReply

Jackie

I have to ask, what’s a chaffle?

Jean

This one seriously tempted me but, mostly, I want the YETI mug. So I’m just going to buy a YETI mug in my choice of color. Boom – saved $134.

Reply ButtonReply

Sherri

LOL me too… well, I also want the hook. But I still come out ahead. 🙂

Reply ButtonReply

Charlotte

Haha, this was basically my thought process as well. As someone who drinks hot beverages verrrry slowlllly, the YETI mug seems like it would come in handy.

Reply ButtonReply

Jean

My husband’s nickname for me is “the guzzler” so I can’t say I’m slow at drinking my hot beverages, but I do hate it when my tea goes cold!

AnninVA

I will use everything in the box. Happy with this one.

Cindy

I’m excited too and have been a member for quite some time so I only pay 125.00 for the box

In the past, Breo reviews have been posted AFTER their customers receive their boxes. I guess my frustration has less to do about the actual Timing of the review and more to do with the fact that the Fall box should have shipped the first week of September, per Breo’s “FAQ” page and there has been no communication as to the box shipping late. This when I saw MSA review of the box I was concerned about the status of my box and whether or not it was lost en route, etc…

Reply ButtonReply

MOI

I live ONE HOUR from where this ships from in Michigan, and I’ve been a long time customer of Breo Box, but this is my biggest frustration. FEDEX has had the shipment information since Sept. 23, still no pickup. This has happened with with EVERY Breo box, pre-pandemic, because Fedex is crap. I emailed Breo Box and got no response (again) to the question- why do the free boxes arrive quickly out of state, yet they can’t deliver to paying customers? Again, this has been happening for a long time, for several boxes, has ZERO to do with a pandemic, forest fire, or anything other than incompetent FEDEX, and instead of using UPS or someone else, they stay with FEDEX. Why the need to charge 5 weeks ahead of time and still not ship timely? Why are long-time paying customers not prioritized for delivery?

Reply ButtonReply

C02

I guess FAQ forgot to mention Covid outbreak/200K deaths, Forrest fires, disrupted USPS deliveries, hurricanes….

Reply ButtonReply

Carol

I didn’t get the email. Again, I wasn’t complaining per se. I was just concerned my order was lost in transit because In the past Breo reviews have occurred after they shipped, not beforehand. No need to get snotty.

As to others being sarcastic about “not having to click on the review if I didn’t want the surprise spoiled… “ I fully admit that if it’s out there, I’m not going to have self control and I’ll peek at the spoiler. Advent calendars WOULD NEVER work for me for the very same reason. That said, why do people have to be so snarky, jeeze. Can’t a person post their thoughts without being attacked?

C02

FYI, Breo sent out “Important Subscriber Updates” 8/12
“…to allow more time to ensure we have all components for the Fall 2020 edition BREO BOX, we will be moving ALL subscriber renewals from 8/15 to 8/28……The target ship date for the Fall 2020 edition box is the week of 9/21 (or sooner)”
And again on 8/28 “Your Breo Box Renewal Processed Successfully: The Fall 2020 Edition BREO BOX is currently scheduled to ship late September!”
And on 9/28 “Shipment is on the way”

WHAT HAPPENED TO YOUR CHICKENS

Reply ButtonReply

Megan K.

Dizzy passed away and Satch is currently living with a close friends flock. Chickens aren’t solo creatures and we thought it would be best for her social needs to have more friends of her own. Satchel is thriving and we visit her often! It was a really hard choice but her needs were more important.

Reply ButtonReply

Mimosa

Hi Megan,
Thanks for another great review. This looks like a great box this time round. Even though the value to cost ratio is a bit low, it really cements the idea that a subscription to this box would be an ideal gift for ‘the guy / girl who has everything’. Thank you also for the Satchel update! I also worried upon reading at you no longer have chickens, but I also knew life could be pretty unhappy for a chick with no companions to forage with, so it is lovely to know she is living with new feathered friends. I hope they welcomed her happily, and I am sure she loves your visits.

katie

Happy to hear that Satchel is living with her “friends”. She would have been lonely without Dizzy. Your a good Mama:)

Beth

Good for you! Yes, it definitely is incredible hard for flock animals not to be with others of their kind.

Shannon

Right?! I recall she lost the one but what about her second one. Sniff sniff!

Reply ButtonReply

katie

I read about the one also, sad to hear now they are both gone.

Jennifer

I would suggest that anyone who has kids age 10-19 or even who has kids visit that they use this lock to lock all medicine including Tylenol. Especially Tylenol. Suicide is the 2nd highest cause of death in these age groups, and if they can’t get ahold of a gun, then household pills are the easiest to get. Have had a lot of sad stories at work, lately. A lock like this one seems perfect for saving lives.

Reply ButtonReply

Charlotte

I learned recently that is is surprisingly easy to overdose on Tylenol, even accidentally. Cosigning this message.

Reply ButtonReply

Jennifer

Charlotte-it really is. My horrible case that day was an 11 year-old who for sure took less than 20. A little heavy topic for sub box conversation, but Megan asked for suggestions for the lock 🔐 so I went there! 😆

Megan K.

This is a really great and totally thoughtful suggestion Jennifer. Thanks for sharing it with us. ♥️

Reply ButtonReply

Kristin

Wow this is the first time I regret not doing.

Reply ButtonReply

Carol

No offense intended towards MSA, but it kind of sucks that there is already a review of this box when my box hasn’t even shipped yet. I’m curious whether or not other subscribers are still waiting for their box to ship.

Reply ButtonReply

Amber P

What???? It’s pretty common for MSA and influencers to get their sub boxes early. If you don’t want to be spoiled don’t read a post with “review” in the title!

I mean what the heck!

MissJ

I don’t understand how people can complain about a review being up and spoiling some of the fun for them when they are the ones that chose to click on the article that clearly says it’s a review. What am I missing? Just don’t read this yet.

Madison

Can confirm. Still waiting and agree about the review being premature and lessening the unboxing experience.

Aleks

Hi socaldeb!

If you’re card hasn’t been charged, then you don’t have an open order. Email [email protected] and they’ll help you get it resolved 🙂

Best,
Aleks @ BREO BOX

socaldeb

Mine hasn’t either. Haven’t even charged my card.

Jenn

I don’t see how it sucks in any way. You have to click into the review to read it, so you’re not spoiled unless you want to be? The initial photo is just of the box and not even of any items.

Sherri

But on the flip side – I greatly appreciate it as it has informed my decision as to whether or not to get this box. Only limited spoilers were released (I think maybe 3 items?) and for some that might not be enough to pull the trigger (or not). I’m pretty sure the reviews that come before most get their boxes (and it’s not just this box, but they do it for FFF some others as well, I believe) are handled that way by design and specifically so people can inform themselves about box contents before it’s too late to get the box.

Boxtopus!

Amazing review, Megan! This laptop cleaner is EXACTLY what I have been needing in my life.
