Medusa's Make-Up August 2020 "Birthday Box" Review

Along with my beauty items, I received an info card that details what items are in the box. I love how detailed this info card is (compared to some other boxes' info cards)!

The theme this month is "Birthday Box." There's no note about whose birthday it is - I'm unsure if this box is celebrating the birthday of the subscription box itself, or of Medusa's Make-Up brand. Either way, the theme is festive and celebratory, which is always a fun combo!

Let's unpack this box!

10+ Free Chemistry Nail Polish in "Heart of Gold" - Retail Value $18.00

The featured brand this month is 10+ Free Chemistry, which is a line of nail products that do not contain the 10 most common harmful chemicals that are often found in nail polishes. I received the sparkly gold color, which is sheer and has thicker and thinner gold sparkles in it. This nail polish contains a bio-peptide complex that is supposed to make your nails healthier and stronger. I'm excited to see if that's true for me after I wear this polish for a little bit!

Sponge Blender - Listed Value $5.99

On the info card, this "custom Medusa sponge" is listed as having a retail value of $5.99, but I cannot find it anywhere on their website to verify the pricing. This sponge is very similar to a Beauty Blender, but it did feel slightly larger to me than Beauty Blenders I have used in the past. It also has a memory-foam like feel to it, where it stays squished in for a second or two longer than you would expect before bouncing back to its original egg shape.

I used this to apply a lightweight foundation and it worked well! I sometimes struggle with makeup sponges soaking up the product too much when I'm trying to use them for application, and although this sponge did soak up some of the product, it wasn't an unusually large amount.

Medusa's Make-Up Liquid Eyeshadow in "Ava" - Retail Value $13.00

The next item is a shimmery champagne-colored liquid eyeshadow. I love this color so much! Out of all the options they carry in this line, "Ava" is definitely the color I would choose for myself, so I'm happy to have received it. I also like that it matches the sparkly gold nail polish that we also received - if you want to do a head-to-toe monochrome look, you're set!

The product goes on as a liquid and dries down into a more powdery texture, which I love because it makes the eyeshadow really easy to wear.

For this eye look, I dabbed on a tiny amount of the liquid shadow right in the inner corner of my eyelids, and then used my fingertip to blend it outwards. I then used a medium netural shadow to add depth to my outer crease, and I think this is a really pretty daytime look! The shadow feels very buildable, so if you wanted a more glam look for evening it could be built up to add more shine and glitz.

Medusa's Makeup Metallic Blush Brush - Listed Value $7.00 (similar found here)

This is another item that I am unable to find on the Medusa's Make-Up website. I'm guessing it's either a newer product that hasn't been released yet, or it's something that is older and has been discontinued. Either way, it's a beautiful brush! The pink handle is so pretty, and the bristles are super soft and flexible.

Medusa's Makeup Metal AF Lip Gloss in "I Wanna Rock" - Retail Value $11.00

The last item is a liquid lipstick in a metallic lilac shade. While I can appreciate this color from afar, it is just so not something you would ever find me wearing. This lip gloss is full coverage and has a super bright metallic sheen to it.

Here are swatches of the liquid eyeshadow (top) and the lip gloss (bottom). You can really see that purple shade coming through here!

Just for you guys, I braved this metallic purple lip gloss so that I could create a thorough review! I think you can see in my face how I feel about it though - it was just a big miss for me. Not only is it a color that I wouldn't ever pick on my own, the formula was super drying immediately after putting it on.

Rawganic Refreshing Facial Wipe - Estimated Value $0.50 (Buy a full-size of 25 wipes for $12.49)

We also received a bonus refreshing facial wipe. The wipe had a subtle pleasant scent, and it was saturated with toner-like product. After using the wipe I felt like my skin was tighter and more cleansed than it does after using a simple makeup remover wipe.

Verdict: I thought that this month's Medusa's Make-Up Beauty Box was a fun one! The nail polish and eyeshadow are pretty, wearable colors and have great formulas. And even though the lip gloss was a miss for me, I appreciate that this box sends new and unique items to try. The retail value for these items comes to a whopping $55.49, which is an excellent value!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Orders are generally processed within 1-3 business days, so you will likely receive August as your first box if you subscribe before the end of the month.

Value Breakdown: At $18.95 for this box, here's what you're paying for each item:

  • Nail Polish: $6.15
  • Sponge: $2.04
  • Eyeshadow: $4.44
  • Brush: $2.39
  • Lip Gloss: $3.75
  • Wipe: $0.17

This was my third and final (for now) Medusa box. I thought it was pretty good, but I haven’t been blown away by the subscription to continue, especially because I’ve found more lifestyle-oriented boxes that are taking my money right now. ;D I think the lip gloss is pretty, but I’ve only worn it once, so I can’t remember if it was drying. I love the nail polish, but mine chipped super bad after only a day! I’ll try a clear topcoat next time to see if it helps at all.

Thanks for the comment! I always do a topcoat with any nail polish – I bet that will work really well for you!

Thank you for such an honest and thorough review. I don’t get this box but I like reading the reviews just in case I decide to subscribe. Yes the lipstick looks painfully dry and that is definitely a unique color so thanks for putting it on for us to see 💄.
