The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar July 2020 Review

All July Beauty boxes arrived without an insert this month. You can view the product descriptions here.

FACE THE DAY SPF 30 Tinted Moisturizer by Willing Beauty, 0.5 fl oz. - Retail Value $18.00

My Mom was just telling me how she has been using a tinted moisturizer this whole summer and she is obsessed with it! She said I should try one and bam, this little guy arrived. This blend can go on cleansed skin before sun exposure (really you should be using some sort of SPF every day no matter the season), and you can reapply throughout the day as needed. The top active ingredients are Zinc Oxide (20%), Inactive Ingredients: Isododecane, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethicone, plus many more. I found this to be incredibly lightweight and it gave my skin a smooth matte finish. My overall skin tone looked more even, which I love since I tend to have a lot of red undertones in my skin. The only thing that I didn't love was that I didn't feel deep hydration when I applied; my skin felt pretty dry shortly after applying so I ended up adding my usual moisturizer on top of this. While I'm not totally sold on this as a moisturizer, I do love how it made my skin tone more even so I am going to be using this on days that I go to the pool and am not putting too much makeup or oils on my face.

Extreme Teeth Whitening Charcoal Gel by Skin Chemists, 1.69 fl oz. - Retail Value $44.00

I have tried a few different charcoal teeth whiteners but I always have the same reaction to them; I just cannot get past the texture and look when I use them. This product is made with 100% pure Activated Charcoal to remove plaque and provide your teeth with advanced whitening. As you can see, the product is black from the active charcoal and it does have a grainy texture to it. I used this once, but I will tell you, there is something about the black on my teeth and lips that just sort of makes me feel sick to my stomach. My husband, however, was super interested in this and loves any product with charcoal in it. He said that he hasn't noticed a huge difference in the whiteness of his teeth, but he said he does have a fresh clean sensation like he just went to the dentist or flossed. While this wasn't for me, I know he will get a lot of use out of it, plus the bottle is pretty big so it is going to last him a while! Does anyone else have a hard time with charcoal teeth products?

Correcting Facial Serum by Organic & Botanic, 1.01 fl oz. - Listed Value $18.00

I love trying new facial serums and am always on the lookout for that perfect product that makes my skin glow. So you know I was excited to give this bottle a try! This serum is made with Seabuckthorn fruit and Rose Otto oils which have vitamins A, C, and E along with essential fatty acids that help to rejuvenate your skin. The serum is meant to even skin tone and reduce fine lines and wrinkles while counteracting environmental skin damage. I honestly can't say enough about this serum! It is pretty thick so I only used 2 to 3 drops at night along with my usual skincare routine. I wake up in the morning to skin that feels honestly like silk. I have a natural glow, hydration, and smoothness that I haven't experienced in a while. My only issue is that the citrus in this blend has been irritating my eyes quite a bit; I have some pretty intense burning for about 5 minutes after I apply. I have tried not going anywhere near my upper eye area, but no matter what I still get the burning. I am going to hold off on using this for a little to see if maybe it is just my allergies, but I really don't want to have to stop using this because it is liquid gold for my skin!

Melting Lip Powder by CLE Cosmetics - Retail Value $20.00

I was really excited for this lip powder when I saw it in the July spoilers. The brand is super interesting as well: founded in Korea by a Parsons graduate, CLE Cosmetics focuses on making beauty products that are non-toxic, vegan, and cruelty-free. This powder is a transforming pigmented powder that you can use on your lips, cheeks, or eyes. It looks like powder in the bottle, but comes out like a lip gloss and goes on with a matte finish. I really really wanted to love this, but I just did not like the way it went on and the staying power was not good for me. I would apply and apply to try to get full coverage, but kept getting streaks, and once I even patted my lips together they would smudge. It was an ongoing fight to get this lip powder to cover my lips which only made the streaks worse. It went on wet, dried very quickly to an almost matte finish, but it still felt rather sticky which I think is why I couldn't get it to cover nicely (you can see in the photo that my lips were just not taking to this color). The color that I received is one that I would totally wear every day come fall and winter, but I just could not get it cover nicely for me each time I tried it. I even did a lip scrub before using and it still would not go on evenly. I am really bummed about this lip powder. Let me know in the comments if this powder worked for you!

Highlighting Sheets + Protective Case by Mai Couture - Retail Value $25.00

I thought this little case was a wallet or something until I opened it and realized it was filled with 30 highlighter infused sheets! So you can basically put this case in your bag to add a little highlight and shine remover on the go. They would also be great for traveling since the sheets won't shatter, unlike an actual highlighter or blush. The brand is super cool too because each sheet is not tested on animals, they are recyclable, biodegradable, paraben-free, and talc-free. Each sheet is sort of sticky, making it great to add some color while removing excess oils. You can use one for both cheeks and another to add a highlight to your collarbone as I did in the above photos! I can't say that I am really applying makeup on the go these days, but I do always like to bring some makeup with me if I go out for a date night with my husband. While we haven't had one of those in a looooong time, I really loved how these highlighter sheets applied and the color they gave me so I am going to hold onto these for when I can use them on a night out!

Heated Eyelash Curler by Revele - Listed Value $15.00

I have been curling my eyelashes since I was a teenager, and boy do I wish I had this tool all of those years! I mean, we use heat to get curl in our hair, so why would we not get that perfect bend in our lashes?! It sounds so simple, but for me, curling my lashes really gives me a wide-awake look that always changes the way my eye makeup looks. To use, all you have to do is turn the curler on, let it heat for 30 seconds, carefully place your lashes between the two silicone pads, and press to hold for a few seconds for instant curl. I honestly was nervous to put heat to my lashes, but as long as you go slowly, are careful, and hold for a few seconds, this tool is super easy to use! The result is a perfect curl that makes me feel awake without even applying mascara. This is going to be my new go-to for perfect lashes!

Verdict: The Beauty Box by Bombay & Cedar was filled with a lot of interesting products that took me out of the box from my usual beauty products! The facial serum is honestly a miracle product for me, leaving my skin feeling absolutely flawless and as soft as silk (really my skin is like butter when I use this product). The only downside is that it is irritating my already sensitive eyes, but I am determined to figure out how to continue using this, so hopefully, I can continue use again soon. The tinted moisturizer is perfect for pool days when I am not loading up on my other products or makeup since it leaves my skin protected while evening out my redness. The heated lash curler is my new secret weapon to getting the perfect lash curl—seriously, who knew that a heated lash curler even existed?! The lip powder was a miss for me since it just did not apply well at all, and the teeth whitener is a product that I just don't enjoy using so those both were the big misses for me this month. I calculated an estimated value of around $140, and at $31.95 a month for this box, I would say that is an incredible deal. Even though I had a few misses this month, I really enjoyed trying all of the new products, and they each introduced me to new brands that were so fun to learn more about. I totally see the value in treating yourself to products that you might not know existed and to discover brands that are really working to create products that are good for you!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? July boxes have already shipped, so if you order today, you will receive the August box.

Value Breakdown: This box costs $31.95 with free shipping and I calculated a total value of $140, which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Tinted Moisturizer: $4.11
  • Teeth Whitening: $10.04
  • Facial Serum: $4.11
  • Lip Powder: $4.56

Taryn, unrelated, but where did you get your necklace? It’s so cute!

Thank you! It was a 30th birthday gift from my husband from Tiffany’s. I never take it off!

The items are different from other boxes, but are too much work, like those paper sheet masks that I had to spray with the enclosed mist. I still haven’t tried a single mask. That was last month. This month, it’s the same company, but their lip powder product, another super time-consuming product when there’s such a simple method already in existence. Everything is just too gimicky (?) to me and I have canceled after two boxes, since I have not used one single item.

The Willa face sunscreen item is not a moisturizer. It’s just a sunscreen. It says ‘put on after your moisturizer’ on the box. (Seen in the review above) If you read the box, or go to the Willa site, is says nothing whatsoever about moisturizing. So…maybe that’s why it’s not moisturizing?

Oof, yes, very annoying to read a review when the product isn’t even in the correct category!
And it says sun exposure. And it has 20% zinc oxide. Who doesn’t know that’s sunscreen?

This was my last box. 🙁

The heated eyelash curler really scares me! 🙈

I did not have the same experience with the lip powder! I got the Barbie Pink shade. It had more of a stain effect than a lipstick. I liked the way it looked and felt on my lips. I’ve only tried it once so far — I did instantly get a bunch of pink pigment on my teeth when trying to apply it. (I haven’t worn it since then because of that issue. I’m more likely to wear a lip product I don’t have to fuss with, & I’m not sure if the product-on-the-teeth thing is something I can fix with practice & a more skillful application, or if the product is just Like That.) I did expect that it might be messy & opened it carefully over the sink, but didn’t have any fallout problems.

I’ve heard charcoal is bad for teeth, so I won’t use that product.

I wish the SPF wasn’t tinted. I’ll probably pass that on to someone else.

I had the same fear about the tint being too colorful for my face, and it looks like it would be when you squeeze it out, but it blends out to no color. At least it did on my face. I was impressed with how smooth it applied and that it did not leave me with an orange cast. I was pleasantly surprised!

I’d be afraid to use that eyelash curler! Also, a warning about charcoal in teeth products- too much wears down the enamel of the teeth. I used charcoal-infused products for a little over a year and that happened. 🙁

That lip powder is truly terrible. It splatters everywhere when you pull the applicator out and stains everthing it touches except my lips. The color is perfect for me but fades into nothing within 10 minutes no matter how much I apply. Allure sent this stuff out a while back and I had the same experience then but I wanted to give it a second chance. I won’t be doing that again.

I totally feel the same way! I was surprised how much it went everywhere when taking it out of the bottle. Not a super great concept.

I’m glad to hear that the facial serum is really nice… because that’s the only product I kept in the box, lol. Unfortunately, this was the 2nd box in a row that wasn’t quite for me…. but I still haven’t written them off yet. I still have four more boxes in my 6-month sub, and I’ll make my decision on whether I’d like to re-sub (with a nice discount) then. I gifted the tinted moisturizer & highlighter sheets since I don’t use those types of products, I gifted the lip powder because I’d make a mess of myself trying to use it, I gifted the teeth whitening gel because I don’t like the idea of having to brush my teeth 4x/day (I’m always illogically(?) worried about over-brushing my teeth), and I gifted the eyelash curler because I’ve always been too scared to use one of those (heated or un-heated). I already see one August spoiler isn’t for me so it’ll be gifted (the concealer) and I’m okay with the Evolue spoiler, so I hope I’m able to keep at least half of the August box! 🙂

that’s frustrating because I never saw ig announcements and even content. she did posted little glimpses what should be there. did she sell it in her store or somewhere else?

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

I just figured it out myself recently, lol… click her profile pic and that’ll show you what she’s posted in her stories in the past 24 hours. 🙂

Svetlana7e

I wish MSA would post. I still don’t know how to check stories on ig. All I saw her live videos which I skipped

Luna

Yes, she sold the kits through her store. She did a post on 8/6 (currently 7 rows down on her IG) where she listed an August lineup which stated when the full reveal of the kits would occur (8/13) and when they would go on sale (8/14). Her next post provided some details on the kits. On 8/13 she did a YT video and blog post with full spoilers including price & launch time. She posted on her stories on the 14th when extra kits would be available (8/15). I let MSA know about the kits on 8/12, but they didn’t post about it. 🙁

Julie B

I was scared to use the eyelash curler too, but thought I’d be brave and give it a go. My lashes are short and straight, so in order for the curler to work I had to place it really (uncomfortably) close to my lash line, and when I tried it I didn’t see any difference. I’ll be gifting it to a friend and hope she has better luck.

Luna

Eyelash curlers in general totally freak me out, lol!!! Basically, I just don’t trust myself, and know that I’ll end up pulling them out rather than curling them. Ouch! Fortunately, I have a decent curl to my lashes that I’m satisfied with, so whatever help a mascara can provide I’m usually happy with. 🙂

Sherri

Yeah, the July box wasn’t for me either. I ended up cancelling my subscription after I got July’s box; the August box will be the last box of my pre-paid sub. I love this box in theory because they think outside of the (sub) box and include some items that you don’t typically see in comparable subs (examples: heated lash curler and highlighter sheets), which I think is fantastic. But in the end I haven’t found too many of the products to be of use to me personally.

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

You’re saying exactly what I’m thinking. 🙂 I also like the box in theory, and was pretty satisfied with their first three boxes which is why I decided to do a 6-month sub with a discount, but so far they haven’t be hitting it out of the park for me. They’re definitely decent products, but more times than not it seems, just products I personally wouldn’t use. I don’t mind gifting an item or two from my boxes, but when it feels like it’s consistently more than half of the box, then I know it’s not a best fit for me. I’ll ride it out, but will most likely need at least a 25% off discount to re-sub again. 🙂

Flora

Can I be one of your gift recipients J/K 😘

Luna

Lol!! You so would be if I knew you IRL! 🙂

Svetlana7e

Luna, do you know when C aroline H release her bag? I think she already did and it is sold out but nothing on her ig page. I am so confused with her.

Reply ButtonReply

Luna

Hi Svetlana! Her kits initially went live very early Friday morning (2am PST), and of course they sold out (kit #1 was still available when I started work at 6am PST, but sold out soon after). She re-released the remaining kits from those that accidentally placed duplicate orders Saturday morning around 9am PST, and unfortunately those are sold out now too. 🙁 FWIW, she does have the bag for sale the products come in. I really like the bag… but could probably do without the “Skin Rocks” printed on it, lol.

Carrie

She released them on Thursday or Friday. I’m pretty sure they’re sold out.
