My Fashion Crate Summer 2020 Review

Okay guys, you have been heard! A lot of readers have questioned this box in the past as far as the content and quality, and recently My Fashion Crate has decided to do a little revamp that works harder to highlight emerging designers. While I've always enjoyed this box (yes, there were a few questionable items in the past), and have discovered a lot of great items since I began reviewing it, I am really excited about the new direction they are moving! This is what they have to say about what's new with My Fashion Crate 2.0:

A new websiteTo showcase the emerging designers, we have a section to share about their stories and inspiration.

High quality clothing from emerging designers: Yes, we heard you!  You need better quality and trendier fashion. We will be teaming up with emerging designers to bring their fashion items to you.

Price change: The Accessories Box is $55/season and The Style Box is $85/season. All U.S. order shipping is $7.95.

Seasonal subscription plan: Now renewing every 3 months instead of every month. Spring Boxes begin shipping mid-March. Summer Boxes begin shipping mid-June. Fall Boxes begin shipping mid-September. Winter Boxes begin shipping mid-December.

Size change: We are now offering size XS to 2XL. For more details, check out our FAQ page.

Let's check out their first quarterly box!

We received this mini magazine with all of the information about our box inside. Each page tells us all about the designer and then gives a brief description and the retail value of our items. On the back, it lists some member perks which includes a 20% off code for anything in their shop!

Camilla Straw Shoulder Bag by Poppy & Sage in Palm Leaf - Retail Value $78.00

This first item is one that I was quite excited about! I don't own anything like it and I feel like it's such a trendy little bag that will be so fun to sport at the beach. The founders of this brand, Poppy & Sage, are a husband and wife team committed to providing sustainable, quality products while supporting artisans in Indonesia. This beautiful, rattan straw bag was handwoven in Bali and features a leather strap and snap enclosure.

Inside is this beautiful palm leaf fabric which is perfect for this bag with tropical vibes! This is an 8-inch bag that is measure 3.5 inches wide so it's just big enough for the essentials. It also came with a dust bag to keep it safe! You can see me wearing this one further on in the review!

Nailmatic Pure Color Nail Polish in Eva - Retail Value $12.00

Our next item is a plant-based nail polish in a pastel coral/pink color that is a great bold shade for summer. I love the idea of an eco-friendly polish with bio-based with ingredients like plant keratin and starflower oil that can actually nourish your nails! This is a 10-free polish that is both vegan and cruelty-free. They also use biodegradable paper for packaging and even reduce their carbon footprint by using a short supply chain with partners within 200km of their offices. That's pretty cool!

So how was the formula? Impressive! One coat provided decent coverage, but you can see that with 2 coats here (sorry for the pitiful pinky nail only shot!), I was able to get a high-shine finish that actually dried fairly quickly and has held up well! I also really love the color. I'm thinking it's going to look great as a toe polish for the beach!

Loved Necklace by Carolyn Hearn Designs - Retail Value $21.00, Listed Value $34.00 (This necklace is currently sold out which may explain the value discrepancy here!)

This necklace feels like another great summery item with the gold plated chain and a gorgeous rose quartz pendant. The chain measures 16 inches and the stone is coated in a protective sealant. This necklace was handcrafted in California and is designed to transition with you throughout the day, which is my kind of jewelry! Once I throw a necklace on, I rarely remove it (yes, I'm lazy!) so I need jewelry that can stand up to sleeping and showering in it. So far this beautiful necklace has passed the test and it has been such a nice accent no matter what I've worn.

It's a little shorter than what I usually wear, but it's been so comfortable and I love how subtle the quartz stone is!

Blissful Room Boost by AdoraTherapy, 10 mL - Retail Value $20.00

This brand is familiar to me, although I have never tried their room spray. The packaging is pretty stunning all around and the room spray itself is all-natural, organic, and vegan. This room spray would be great for a smaller room since it has a pretty light scent that isn't overwhelming. They recommend using it to boost your mood by spraying it on your sheets and pillows before bed, using it in your office space, or even before or after yoga. I first noted the ylang-ylang and then you get the sweet orange with the tangy bergamot on the finish. It's a nice scent that will definitely freshen things up and this bottle will be so pretty sitting on a shelf!

The following item only comes in the Style Box and not the Accessory Box:

Bahia Maxi Dress by Area Stars - Listed Value $125.00

With the new focus on featuring designers, our clothing item comes from Area Stars which is a brand dedicated to sustainability and can be found at luxury retailers like Bloomingdales, Nordstrom, and Rent the Runway (check out this gorgeous black version I found!). Their clothing is designed to "empower women of all backgrounds, styles, and shapes to feel like a star in their own area" and they work with "sought-after" artisans worldwide. This certainly feels like a step up from the clothing we have previously received! This dress feels luxurious with layers of 100% cotton fabric and beautiful hand embroidery in gold silk thread. Subscribers could have received this long maxi dress version or the shorter version. I think I would have been happy with either!

This dress does run a bit big, but it has adjustable straps and I just love the romantic Boho handmade feel that it has. It really feels like a quality dress and while it may not be incredibly flattering since it is a bit too big on me (I'm in between a medium and large these days), it is comfortable to wear and I could see throwing this on for a low-key comfortable option that will definitely draw some attention with the beautiful embroidery details.

It also works nicely with the handwoven bag!

Verdict: I was so excited to see what the new and improved My Fashion Crate box had to offer and overall, I thought they did a great job of revamping their brand! I love that they are actually featuring designers and showcasing their work, and even better yet, the designers seemed to be dedicated to sustainability which is great for a fashion-focused box! I love that so many items were handmade by artisans and everything worked so well together for a cheerful, summery vibe. This box did increase in price now that it is quarterly, but the quality improvement is pretty huge. The total retail value of the items in this box comes to $256 which is pretty great for a $92.95 ($85 + $7.95) box full of quality fashion items. This is only their first box under their new model, so I'm excited to see what great discoveries they will offer in future boxes!

I am loving this new direction for My Fashion Crate. I made my husband do a date night tonight just so I could wear my new dress and use my new purse. The maxi is very billowy, but it is very fun and the quality is amazing. I would have preferred perfume to room spray, though

I absolutely *hated* this “upgraded” MFC box. The boho dress is two layers and very heavy. The straps are very thin, like they could tear during adjustments. And the “waist” is right underneath the chest. The dress looked adorable on reviewer Brandi. On me, it hung like a burlap sack, very unflattering. I didn’t like the purse, either. OK, it’s kind of cute, but there are no pockets or dividers inside so phone, keys, wallet, makeup, face mask, hand sanitizer would all be in a jumble. I prefer a more practical purse. And the rattan straw has a very pungent odor to it, not sure if that will fade away. The necklace is lovely, the only item that I liked. But for a box that costs over $90, I was pretty insulted that the other two items were nail polish and worse, a room freshener? One of those things should be another fashion item, like a summer shrug to wear with the dress, or a pair of sandals, a scarf, anything but room freshener. The old month-to-month MFC subscription wasn’t perfect, but there are go-to pieces that I have worn a lot–camisole, delicate blouses, a striped sweater, leggings, and many nice bracelets. I am not sure if I can continue my subscription with this new “upgrade.”

The dress and the bag both look great. One thing I didn’t like though is that these companies say a lot – without saying they’re fair trade. That makes me question what they are actually doing.

It’s nice to see a sub box actually listen to what people are saying though, this seems like a nice step up from the Ross finds of the old box.

Nice to see the change. I’m still not tempted, but I think it’s great that they made this move. I agree especially with the higher point some measurements would help

Interesting! I read all of the FAQS and looked at the size chart. However, there are no accompanying measurements for their sizes. As we all know, women’s sizes vary greatly…an 8 here is more like 12 there…!

Wow! This is quite impressive. They’ve really stepped up their game. So much so that I’m tempted to try them now when I wasn’t before. Even at the new price point.

I agree! I’ve never gotten this box, but I’ve kept an eye on Brandi’s reviews, & this definitely is a step up from past boxes!
