Style Plan by Frank And Oak Review - June 2020

It's important to note that for a limited time, Frank And Oak is waiving their $25 styling fee and has extended their return policy to 30 days! That means you can sign up for the Style Plan for free and only pay for the items you hold on to.

*As a reminder, you will get charged for everything in your Style Plan box up-front when ordering and will receive a refund for anything you end up returning.

Another great feature that sets this clothing subscription apart from others is that they have a button on most of their items to "Add to my next Style Plan box." This allows you to select what goes in your Style Plan box without the help of a stylist, or you can take some of the stylist's suggestions but not others. Not every item has this feature, but many do. I've never seen this feature in a styling subscription before, but the fact that it's an option here is part of what made me really love my first experience with Frank And Oak!

A quick introductory note: I've had my eye on Frank And Oak for quite some time, for a number of reasons. Among them are an appreciation for all their sustainability efforts and the hearsay of how soft and comfortable their clothes are (a must for me in this season of life). Also, while I was once drawn to the boldest colors, patterns, and silhouettes in my outfits, I now appreciate a closet filled with versatile-but-unique pieces that can be mixed and outfitted endlessly to represent my mood and vibe via color combos. I am an earth-tone and warm-tone gal through and through—though sometimes a pop of color or pattern still makes an appearance—and I was just so overwhelmed with excitement to try Frank And Oak that I forgot to mention my preferred palette in my initial note to my stylist! I just communicated that I'd like to stock up on shorts and tank tops. So, I ended up putting the "Add to my next Style Plan box" feature to use off the bat. In some cases I took the stylist's silhouette suggestion but switched for a different color, in others I just added things that caught my eye. I'll go into the specifics below!

The Flat Rib Tank Top in Deep Green, size small - Retail Value $34.50/Member Price $29.50

Linen-Tencel® High-Waisted Shorts in Brown, size 6 - Retail Value $69.50/Member Price $64.50

My first styled box was great, and had I not changed a thing I probably would have been happy with it, but I'm over the moon with my selections! I swapped out the Flat Rib Tank Top in Black that was chosen for me by my stylist to the Deep Green color you see here, and switched a black pair of shorts for this brown pair. I'm really pleased with the color combo! The tank truly does have an earthy green tone to it, though it photographs grey (both on the Frank And Oak site and in my photos). Honestly, this is one of those tops I wouldn't mind having in every color they offer. I think that tapered shoulder is so flattering, and I was happy my bra straps didn't show too much.

The shorts were awesome—this is my first time experimenting with a "dress shorts" type of style. Gotta love a linen blend for summer! Gotta love pockets! Gotta love a pulled-together article of clothing with an elastic-back waist for comfort! Clearly, no complaints here. I'm looking forward to playing with styling them; I just have a good feeling that they'll span occasions nicely. If you're curious, you can see what Marne thought of these shorts in black here.

The Good Cotton Boy Tee in White, size small - Retail Value $34.50/Member Price $29.50

There's just something about a black-and-white striped tee that I love, even though it doesn't seem like an intuitive fit with what I generally go for. Until the day this top arrived I had a similar one in my drawer that I couldn't seem to get rid of even though I had stopped reaching for it (it was old and worn-in, not in the shabby-chic way). I had read such rave reviews of how soft Frank And Oak's tees are and had to jump on this one, and I'm soooo glad I did. It's simply wonderful. Lightweight, nice breathable fit, easy to tuck in. I absolutely love it more than I ever liked the one I finally junked. And not just because it's made from 100% organic cotton that was sustainably grown and harvested (but partially). I'm going to get a lot of good wear out of this staple.

Wrap Dress in Deep Wine, size small - Retail Value $129.00/Member Price $109.50

My stylist had chosen a pale yellow floral wrap dress for me, and while it was really pretty and perfectly lightweight for the suddenly hot weather, I ended up rolling with her wrap dress idea but swapping it out for this one. The color is called wine, but it's definitely more of a reddish-brown than the burgundy that I often associate with a wine color. I know a sweater dress may seem odd for warm weather, but to me it's perfect for early mornings or breezy evenings. It's light and soft. In the fall and winter I'll layer it with the best of 'em, but for now I'll enjoy the organic-cotton-blend hug it gives me while I drink coffee on my front porch.

Quarter Length Ribbed Socks in Laurel Green - Retail Value $12.50/Member Price $11.50

Just before confirming all the items in my Style Plan box, I did one last once-over of my picks and noticed that there's an option at the bottom to quick-add some socks. Don't mind if I do! I think socks are one of the best ways to add a hint of playful color to your outfit (as any dad or groomsman will tell you) and I was smitten over the hues Frank And Oak had on offer. I was so close to going for orange, but landed on this deep sage pair, and man, they are just an extremely nice color. I smiled as I added them to my sock drawer, and if that isn't what it's all about, what is? These socks have great elastic to them so they hug close and stay up, and as is the theme here, they're perfectly soft. I see many more Frank And Oak socks in my future!

Verdict: Style Plan by Frank And Oak gets a standing ovation! I felt right at home wearing each of my new garments, and didn't for a moment consider returning or exchanging them. They're all high-quality, well-fitting, and a departure from the norm even despite their minimalist nature. Plus, I find Frank And Oak's pricing—especially with the member discounts—to be an excellent value for sustainable clothing.

To Wrap Up:

Can I still get this box if I sign up today? Style Plan by Frank And Oak uses your preferences and tastes to curate a mix of styles just for you, so you may have different options than me. You can sign up for your own Style Plan to see what the styling team will pick for you (and/or make some picks for yourself, like I did)!

ACTIVE DEAL: Get $35 off your first month of Style Plan!
CODE: MSA35

Value Breakdown: The retail price for the five items I received this month is $280.00, but with the discounted member pricing it comes to $244.50. That's a savings of $35.50 for this box.

Be aware that if you end up returning anything in you Frank + Oak box, it takes them FOREVER to refund your credit card – like 2 months, no joke!

I love seeing your reviews; your bright and cheerful nature just shine through your words. I’ve wanted to try this sub for a while, but I just can’t get past the fact that they charge for the *entire* amount first, then refund you. I have never ever heard of that before and I have been subbing for a loooong time. It just doesn’t sit right with me, definitely not enough to try them out, sadly.

I agree, definitely not ideal, and probably a barrier to entry for this box for many. 💔 But thank you for your kind words!

I love the Frank & Oak aesthetic. Those shorts are so cute on you and Marne. I keep crossing my fingers they will start offering extended sizes.

Shouldn’t inclusive sizing be a prerequisite for every brand? I will keep my fingers crossed, too, Amy!

Tam

I suddenly feel a lot better about the amount of money I’ve spent on clothes lately.

This was well written and entertaining, but HOLY MOLY this is not the deal I’m looking for in a sub box .

Tam, yes, agreed, this is not a discount clothing box by any means. I just wish you could feel the clothes! They might feel worth it to you then! Either way, thanks for reading!!
