Keto Krate June 2020 Review

I have been on and off the keto diet for about 3 years under a recommendation by my physician, and have had great success! To be honest, the last month has been a tough one for me...I have been overindulging and have slid back into some bad habits. I was extremely happy to receive this box to help me get back on track! Speaking from experience, I feel soooo much better when I eat low carb....so let's do this!

I love this monthly pamphlet! It is always put together so nicely, and is jam-packed with information about the benefits of the keto lifestyle, inspiring quotes, success stories, recipes, and helpful hints. This booklet also includes a link to this month's product info (krate.club) and tips on how to manage your subscription.

Good Dee's Blueberry Pancakes, 7.2 oz - Retail Value $11.99

Fat 9g | Net Carbs 2g | Taste Score: 8/10

I love seeing low carb mixes in this subscription! Just look at that retail value! I have made a variety of recipes for low carb pancakes with some mixed results. A lot of them are really eggy and heavy which I don't enjoy. This particular mix calls for an egg, coconut oil, and coconut milk. I didn't have coconut milk on hand so I substituted with almond milk. I followed the recipe exactly and found the batter a bit too thick, so I added more milk to thin it out. I loved the fact that they weren't eggy, but the coconut flour flavor seemed to overpower the blueberries. I found the pancakes to be a lot better than others I have tried, but I like almond flour a bit more than coconut flour. Slathered in butter and topped with monk fruit syrup, would I eat these again? Definitely!

These pancakes were easy to whip up and pretty tasty!

The Cookie Department Cake Walk Cookie, 2 oz - Listed Value $3.75 (Buy a box of 8 for $30.00)

Fat 19g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 10/10

Well, well, what perfect timing...with my birthday coming up in a few weeks, this birthday cake + sprinkles cookie must have been meant to be! This chewy, delicious cookie's first ingredient is almond flour, which I am always a fan of, but did it pass the taste test? Absolutely! This cookie was spot on for texture and taste. The birthday cake flavor was sooo good, with the perfect amount of sweetness, and no funny aftertaste. My kids who do not follow a keto diet asked if they could each have a bite, and when I went back for more...it was gone! We all gave these babies 2 thumbs up!

Zone Perfect White Chocolate Coconut Shake, 11 fl oz - Listed Value $2.50 (Buy a 12 pack for $29.97)

Fat 17g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 10/10

This is the first time I have received a drink in this box, so I was excited to give it a whirl. White chocolate is one of my favorite flavors and I found it to pair really well with the coconut cream. This shake was creamy and extremely refreshing. I was really impressed to see that this shake was free from gluten, soy, artificial flavors, colors, and sweeteners! The kids even liked it! While this drink was delicious, I wasn't thirsty enough to drink it all at once. Because I was fresh out of almond milk, I used this to whip up our pudding mix below!

Gorilly Goods Hillside Pumpkin Seed and Kale, 1.3 oz - Listed Value $2.09 (Buy a pack of 12 for $30.99)

Fat 17g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 10/10

Hooray for seeds! As a pumpkin farmer, I am all about pumpkin seeds! These little babies are tossed in with organic kale, and tamari with cayenne for just the right amount of spice. I loved the crunch and the easy to carry pack! I need to order these to have when we go camping as they are non-GMO, gluten-free, and nutrient-dense!

Shrewd Food Brick Oven Pizza Protein Puffs, 21 g - Listed Value $2.79 (Buy a pack of 8 for $14.99)

Fat 3g | Net Carbs 2g | Taste Score: 10/10

Oh yes! Pizza flavored crunchy puffs of goodness?! Sign me up! These little round nuggets are made with milk protein isolate and natural pizza seasoning. They have the crunch of a chip without all of the carbs. Plus the pizza flavoring is top notch. It reminds me almost of a pizza-flavored Pringle...one of my old favorites! Like the cookie, my kids weaseled their mitts into this bag and they vanished right before my eyes!

Keto Carne Original Beef Jerky, 2.5 oz - Listed Value $6.25 (Buy a box of four 2.5 oz bags for $24.99)

Fat 2.5g | Net Carbs 0g | Taste Score: 9/10

Even though this is supposed to be MY box, as you have heard above, my kids tend to flock to the table when this box comes looking to try a tasty new treat. Hank is meat obsessed and has been told on multiple occasions to "put the jerky back until I take a picture of it!" This was no exception! Once the photos were taken, the bag was ripped open. This beef jerky is crafted with only three ingredients: beef, seasonings, and water. There are zero carbs and zero sugar which is definitely unlike most chain store jerky packages! I found this to be a bit more dry than I tend to like, but the flavor was really good. Of course, I shared a few pieces with my kids, but I had to hide the rest!

Heka Good Foods White Chocolate Raspberry Bar, 55 g - Listed Value $3.25 (Buy a 12 pack for $38.99)

Fat 15g | Net Carbs 2g | Taste Score: 9/10

More white chocolate? Yes!! This bar is decadent and creamy with the perfectly sweet addition of raspberries! I absolutely love the crunch of almonds in every bite, but found the bar so greasy that it was actually a bit slippery! While it was a little "wet" in texture, it really did taste like a little bite of summer, and I would definitely eat another one!

Simply Delish Vanilla Instant Pudding, 1.7 oz - Retail Value $2.99

Fat 0.3g | Net Carbs 5g | Taste Score: 10/10

I was a little surprised to see another item that needs to be prepared, but I wasn't mad about it. Like I said above, I used my almond milk for the blueberry pancakes, so I decided to substitute the included white chocolate & coconut shake, and boy I'm glad I did! This pudding, while a little thick and lumpy looking, sure tasted amazing! It almost had a tiramisu taste to it! I topped it with a couple of bing cherries, and it was pure heaven! I'll take a package of this any day!

Easy to prepare, and delicious to eat - although in this picture it looks sort of like mashed potatoes topped with cherries!

Pizootz Sea Salt and Vinegar Peanuts - Buy a 16 oz bag for $19.95

Fat 12g | Net Carbs 3g | Taste Score: 5/10

I'm a huge fan of peanuts, so I couldn't wait to try out these artisan flavor infused ones! This company boils the peanuts in marinades that are made of natural ingredients, and then are infused for over 24 hours! While I will once and a while enjoy a salt and vinegar flavored potato chip, I found these peanuts to be too strong. At first it tastes like a regular salted peanut, but after a minute you are hit with a blast of vinegar. I don't feel the nutty flavor pairs well with the vinegar, but my husband thought they were okay. I do plan on checking out their website for their other flavors though!

Singing Pastures Roam Sticks Hickory Smoked Pork with Uncured Bacon, 1 oz - Listed Value $2.29 (Buy a pack of 10 sticks for $22.99)

Fat 9g | Net Carbs 0g | Taste Score: 10/10

Back in the day when we were always on the go, I always had a stash of beef sticks in the car to hold me over until dinner after work. Now I have unlimited snacks at home...which has posed to be a problem... Anyways, this pork and uncured bacon stick was fabulous. It had the juicy texture that I prefer, and the hickory smoke flavor is mild but present in a really delicious way. I wish we would have received another one, as sharing with 2 kids doesn't give the three of us a big enough bite!

The Verdict: I am such a fan of the Keto Krate box, and always surprised! Sticking to a keto diet can be hard, especially when my daily routine was uprooted due to COVID-19. I am really buckling down to get back on the wagon, and this box is so helpful. I was pleasantly surprised by this month's curation as most of the brands were new to me, and I enjoyed almost every single item! I am a fan of the larger items in the box, and the mix kits as I haven't tried a lot of them in the past. I can't wait to see what they send next month!

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Unfortunately, no. If you subscribe today, your first box will be the July box.

Value Breakdown: The box costs $39.99 + free shipping which means that each of the 10 items in the box has an average cost of $3.99. I also want to share that on their website, it states the retail value of this month's products is $40.90, but you would pay $39.62 in shipping costs for each product, plus you would have to spend $29.44 to get the discount code savings of minimum orders for each product, which would bring your total value to $109.96, so I think $39.99 is a pretty good price to test out different snacks and find new faves!

So, this comment is for the July box, which review isn’t up yet but I needed to get this on here. I just got my first KK. One of the items (the “Keto Friendly Sweet Logic red velvet mug cake mix”) says it has 28 NET CARBS for one serving. That is nowhere near “Keto-friendly”. Is this common for this box, to include items that are clearly not Keto?

Everything is coconut and I am allergic to this. I want to follow Keto and I’d love an alternative. The salts work great I find! Diet items that are quick are so hard to substitute. I hope the company can consider this.

There are a lot of almond flour recipes! Coconut flour is a tricky beast anyway, it needs a LOT of moisture and I personally don’t like the texture of all coconut flour baked goods.
As for commercial products, I find almond flour and various protein isolates are more common than coconut! Be wary of sneaky hidden coconut tho, some primal/paleo and also keto terikayi and “soy” based flavors are made with coconut aminos.

That is really tough Victoria! I know a lot of recipes call for coconut flour, but if you search for almond flour recipes I have found a pretty good assortment of those…..like you say though, the trouble is finding quick items. I also recently found pecan flour at the grocery store. I haven’t tried it yet, but the chocolate chip cookies on the back of the package looked amazing! Thanks for commenting!

I don’t even eat keto, but I always find your reviews fun. Plus, I didn’t know you were a pumpkin farmer! How cool. I’d love to hear more about that. I’m addicted to Megan’s hens!

Thanks so much for commenting Boxy Fox!! That sure is sweet that you like my reviews 😀 My husband and I started planting pumpkins about 12 years ago just for our nieces and nephews, and then it turned into a little bit of a side business….last year we grew over 500! And I too am addicted to Megan’s hens! I love the Henny + Roo review!
