Birchbox The Mascara Matchmaker Kit Review

Here is the info sheet for the box. There was a generic coupon code to save $5 off a future mascara purchase, too. As a side note- I modeled each mascara sample in this kit. Swipe all the way through to see the photos.

butter LONDON Oh My, How High!™ Lengthening Mascara, 0.15 oz - Estimated Value $9.37 (Buy the 0.32 oz version for $20)

This mascara has a large and curled wand that gave my lashes good curl but couldn't quite reach to the roots of my lashes. I still liked it and thought it layered really well with the lengthening mascaras in this kit that could reach every lash.

Benefit Cosmetics BADgal BANG! Bigger, Badder, Volumizing Mascara, 0.14 oz -  Estimated Value $11.67 (Buy the 0.30 oz version for $25)

This is one of my favorite mascaras from Benefit. It gives me great length and separation, and I can layer on multiple coats to get the va-va-voom lashes that I live for. This will occasionally clump on me just a little bit, but it’s never hard for me to brush those clumps out and avoid the spider lash look.

jane iredale PureLash® Lash Extender & Conditioner, 0.09 0z - Estimated Value $6.47 (Buy the 0.32 oz version for $23)

jane iredale Longest Lash Thickening and Lengthening Mascara, 0.10 oz - Estimated Value $8.33 (Buy the 0.42 oz version for $35)

This came as a sample set of both the lash primer and mascara. The conditioner did leave my lashes feeling soft, and I noticed a big difference in the mascara when I used this first. Speaking of the mascara, I was honestly surprised when I pulled the mascara wand out of the tube- it is so thick and fluffy, it looked too big to fit in the tiny sample. That huge wand couldn't give me the lift at the base of my lashes the way I prefer, but the conditioner made it much easier to get the big lashes I do prefer. In the photo of me demonstrating these, I am wearing the conditioner + mascara on the side that I am holding the mascara tube on, and just mascara on the other eye.

M·A·C Cosmetics In Extreme Dimension 3D Black Lash Mascara - Buy the 0.44 oz version for $24 (no size was listed for this sample)

This mascara did a little of everything- a little curling, a little volumizing, a little lengthening. It didn't give me the dramatic mascara finish I prefer, but that is more so because I have extraordinarily high standards when it comes to mascaras rather than MAC being subpar. This definitely felt like the smallest sample in the bunch, but no size was listed for me to confirm that notion.

Marcelle Xtension Plus Skyline Mascara, 0.14 oz - Estimated Value $9.13 (Buy the 0.23 oz version for $15)

This mascara didn't do much for me- I need more volume and curl in a mascara, and this one definitely focuses on lengthening. If you're like me, though, and enjoy cocktailing your mascaras, this was a great match for the butter LONDON mascara also in this kit.

W3LL PEOPLE Expressionist Mascara, 0.10 oz - Estimated Value $9.56 (Buy the 0.23 oz version for $21.99)

This mascara gave me fluttery, long lashes, but it did clump and smudge a bit on me. I do prefer an inkier black pigment in my mascaras, but overall I think this would be a good option for those who are more conscious of ingredients in beauty products.

Smashbox Cosmetics Super Fan Mascara, 0.20 oz - Estimated Value $12.73 (Buy the 0.33 oz version for $21)

I really liked this mascara- it allowed me to layer on multiple coats with zero clumping due to the flexible wand. This was probably my favorite mascara discovery in the box.

Stila Cosmetics HUGE™ Extreme Lash Mascara, 0.20 oz - Estimated Value $10.45 (Buy the 0.44 oz version for $23)

This is a tried and true mascara for me- I have gone through at least one full-size tube in the past. A single mascara can never hold my heart for long, but this one definitely competes. It gives me curled, voluminous lashes in an inky black pigment that accentuates my eyes.

Verdict: I am a big fan of mascaras. While I have found plenty that I adore (my current favorite is Volume Disturbia by Givenchy), I still am always eager to try out new mascaras. This kit had a great selection of mostly new-to-me mascaras, and while some of them didn't meet my personal mascara requirements, they were all still good mascaras. Value-wise, I calculated a total value of $77.71 for everything except the MAC sample.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this kit if you order today? No, this kit is now sold out.

That lash conditioner/primer really did have a noticeable effect to the mascara (Jane Iredale set); looks really great!
I wish value sets/limited edition boxes/discovery sets/etc would be available a LOT longer just about everywhere – Birchbox, Sephora, Ulta, et cetera, ad infinitum.

Girl you are looking stunning! I think the Jane Iredale was my favorite on you. I also really enjoyed getting an idea of what each one is good for. This is a fanatic review!

This is why I click on your reviews. You tried on EVERY mascara and took a picture! So. Good. You do your job so well–and we appreciate it–because there is noooo way I am going to try 8 mascaras. I would just forget which one I liked the best-or keep using one I didn’t like just so I dont waste. Now based on this article, I will pick a full size one and buy it. No need to worry about possibly having to return it. I already saw it on someone–you!

Great review Jessica! I love that you had photos of every mascara so we can compare. This is my motto too: A single mascara can never hold my heart for long.

I’m a big fan of Grande lash enhancing serum. It doesn’t give you volume or grow new lashes but prevents fallout of my current lashes so my they are much longer than they normally are (maybe 40%?) I also bought a lash perm kit from Amazon and the process wasn’t too terrible either. Now I don’t even have to use a curler and my perm has lasted 3 weeks and is still fine. I’ve actually been more forgiving of mascara because of these changes since I don’t need length or curl. I’ve enjoyed using Stila Huge but will just continue through my stash from subs before purchasing a full size.

I really wish I hadn’t missed out on this one! I am always on the lookout for the perfect mascara, but, as you said, none keep my heart for too long.
Question for the mascara ladies-
How do you ‘cocktail’ or mix mascaras? Every time I have tried it has turned into a major fail. Actually, I have a hard time even doing a second layer of the same mascara without clumping and spidering. I pretty much have to go in for perfection the first time!
Any advice?

Hi Ashley C.!
When I’m cocktailing mascaras I try to combine different formula types- a curling and a lengthening mascara, for example, rather than two lengthening mascaras.
Also, if you have trouble with mascara clumping regularly I would try wiping the mascara wand off on a tissue to remove excess mascara!

Hi Jessica,
I. Am. In. Awe.
You are my sub box review hero right now.
When I read the bag contents, I thought, ‘wonder how she’s going to work 8 separate mascara reviews? Surely she’s not going to….’. But hot damn! You totally did it! And so well, too. Thank you – for every swipe, wriggle, flutter, snap and removal that was involved in this mascara review odyssey. And those were some looks, girl. Outstanding.

I’ve tried most of these, and they’re decent.

The MAC mascara is not great in the sample size. I’ve gotten maybe one good use out of them, and then not every tube. Luckily, these are the freebies on their site.

Big fan of Stila HUGE. I got it as a sample in a sub box long ago and it’s all I’ll buy now. I have blonde lashes and have tried lots of mascara but this is the one that makes them amazing.

Ah really bummed to have missed this one!

Girl, I don’t know how you do all this mixing & matching of formulas! I barely have the patience for one coat!

I love the last photo of you in the Stila mascara. You’re feelin’ yourself! 🙂

Hi Marion!
Thanks for the sweet words. I definitely remembered my love of purple lipstick and eyeshadow on that day!
