Swar-Yay! "Spring is Blooming" Spring 2020 Review

Our spring theme is "Spring is Blooming" and this flyer shows all five of the items we received this month. It looks like there are some items we get to grow ourselves. Let's check it out!

Modern Sprout Cilantro Garden Jar  - Retail Value $20.00

I have been looking at different indoor growing methods lately and so I was pretty stoked to see this jar in the box! I love that it's such a pretty shade of green, too! I know cilantro is one of those herbs that some people don't like, but I happen to love it and use it frequently in recipes. This kit is so cool and everything you need is included stuffed neatly inside. The jar can be used year-round and comes with organic seeds.

Inside the jar was a little instruction sheet, some grow medium, carbon, a packet of seeds, plant fertilizer, a soil pod and our net pot with the wick strips hanging down. I do not possess a green thumb, so I was happy to see the website description on how this plant self waters through "a passive hydroponic system known as 'wicking,' which brings water and nutrients up to the plant's roots. So whether you forget to water, overwater, or both, we’ve got you covered." I will be the perfect person to put that to the test! Haha

Modern Sprout Cocktail Seed Popper - Retail Value $8.99

They did include another garden item for us, this time in the form of a cute little popper also from Modern Sprout. Inside are seed pods made from clay, coconut husks and non-GMO seeds for some "boozy botanicals." The seeds included are for mint, lemon basil, thyme, and lavender, all of which go great with some spring cocktails! I love this idea because I am a big fan of drinks like juleps and mojitos with muddled herbs, and I bet I can get pretty creative with the other plants here, too!

W&P Peak Speckled Ice Tray in Pink - Retail Value $14.00

Well I never thought I'd be describing an ice tray as cute, but here I am! This pink design with the little colorful flecks throughout is really fun and much cuter than our current ice tray! I love that is is a flexible silicone material making it easy to pop the ice out and that it comes with an internal steel frame and a lid so that you can stack things on top of it without dirtying the ice. This BPA-free tray makes 12 large ice cubes and since it is made of silicone it is safe to use in the freezer, dishwasher, oven, and microwave!

They included a little recipe card for some margarita pops, too!

Ice Tray Treats by Olivia Mack McCool - Retail Value $17.00 (on sale for $11.90!)

To go along with our ice tray, they included this great book full of treats we can make with our ice tray. The book is the perfect size for your kitchen shelf at 6X9" and it includes color photographs of the various treats. There is a table of contents at the beginning separating the treats into categories such as Flavored Chocolates, Cheesecake Bites, and Ice Cream Sandwiches. There is an index at the back so you can also locate recipes by name. Best of all, these recipes are all no-bake!

Here's a look at some of the different types of treats. Everything from jellies to truffles to crispy rice treats!

I decided to make the peanut butter pretzel truffles, although we omitted the pretzels and used semi-sweet chocolate instead of dark since we didn't have either of those on hand! The first step was to melt the chocolate with some coconut oil. While that was melting I mixed some peanut butter with powdered sugar.

Then I poured some chocolate in the bottom of the tray and tilted to coat the sides. I popped that in the freezer for 10 minutes and then took it out and added the peanut butter and then topped it with the remaining chocolate and stuck it in the freezer for another 30 minutes. You can see I was really sloppy with my chocolate here, but once I popped them out of the tray, they had a nice clean look.

Here are the finished truffles. They were so easy to pop out of the tray and came out cleanly. Although since we didn't use pretzels, I think our peanut butter mixture wasn't as full so a few of the truffle sides were a little too long. From the top you can barely tell though! I can definitely see making more treats in this tray now that I know how easy it can be. Mini cheesecakes might be next...yum!

Four Points Trading Co. 8 oz Soy Candle in Frozen Margarita - Retail Value $18.00

Our last item is scented like one of my favorite frozen drinks, a frozen margarita, and comes in a cute mason jar. The scent is great, kind of like key lime pie with a nice fresh tartness to it. This great citrus blend also has a mix of grapefruit, orange peel, and lemon to it. It feels like the perfect candle for relaxing with a nice cocktail on a porch or patio at the end of the day. This 100% pure soy candle is handcrafted and poured with pure fragrance oils that are paraben- & phthalate-free and comes with a braided eco-wick that is free of lead and zinc.

Verdict: I thought the "Spring is Blooming" theme for this quarter's Swar-Yay! box was nicely done. The curation had a great vibe overall and I thought it had a lot of unique, quality items to offer. I'm really excited about the garden jar and my kids are excited to make some more treats with our ice tray and book. These are some items I never would have discovered on my own, which is something that always adds a lot of value to boxes for me. The total retail value of this box comes to $77.99 which isn't bad for a $64.95 box, and since I know I will use each and every item, the value is definitely there for me!

I am a homeschooling mom to 4 kids; 1 girl and 3 boys. While I have been reviewing boxes since 2018 and I love the luxury of trying new products, I'm also balancing it out by dabbling in a little bit of homesteading, too. We now have 4 chickens and a rabbit and my sourdough starter is going strong! I love learning about new brands and sharing the great things I find with others in hopes that they find something new to love or to fit their needs!

Yes…I think it’s expensive for what it is. It is cool, though.
