Scent Box February 2020 Review

This month, I received Scent Box’s “Scent of the Month.”

The information card usually has a little information about the men’s scent of the month on one side and the women’s on the other side. Based on the information card, this one seemed promising.

In case I have not mentioned it in the past, you get a new holder every month and the fragrance is printed on a sticker on the bottom, and the holders tend to be different colors each month, so you can still keep them sorted out.

On to the fragrance:

Ari by Ariana Grande – Estimated Value $11.20 (Buy 1 fl oz for $42)

I don’t really know anything about Ariana Grande except that I had to mute her name on Twitter because I got tired of seeing posts about her when her last album came out. (I also have “Marie Kondo” and “sparks joy” + variants muted.) But I’m also fairly certain she had nothing to do with designing this fragrance and just allowed her name to be slapped on it for marketing purposes and because she gets a cut of the profits. And that’s fine.

As it happens, I like this fragrance. Top notes include marshmallow, raspberry, and pear. I don’t usually see marshmallow in fragrances and I think here it is a stand in for another sugary note, as it is very sweet. I do tend to like sugary notes in fragrances. I don’t notice the raspberry and pear so much.

Mid notes include grapefruit, vanilla orchid, musk, lily of the valley, and woody notes. I like musks, woods, and vanilla. Lily of the valley is rarely noticeable. (Anyway we used to have those growing in our yard when I was a kid and I don’t remember them having much of a scent at all…) I love grapefruit in fragrances although here I got like a one-second whiff of grapefruit and then it was gone. (If you want a long-lived grapefruit scent, you have to go with Pomelo Paradis from Atelier Cologne.)

The base note is rose but this isn’t a floral fragrance on me. (I do like rose, it is typically one of the only floral notes I like all that much.) This has decent sillage and longevity (and extra longevity if you happen to get it on your hoodie like I did, where I can still smell it a day later).

Verdict: The estimated value of my fragrance this month is $11.20. That is below the month-to-month cost of the subscription, but don’t forget that you get a free holder and free exchanges, which add a bit of value. Also, I have to admit I would’ve been unlikely to try this if it hadn’t been sent to me, but it turns out to be one that I like quite a lot, like the kind of thing I might use Ulta points for at the end of the year. I tend to like super expensive fragrances so it is always nice to find something more affordable that I don’t feel bad about spending full price on. (Apparently this is marketed towards people the average age of Ariana Grande’s fans, which is surely not me at 42, but whatever.)

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? Yes, all you have to do is choose this fragrance.

Value Breakdown: This subscription is $14.95/monthly and this month, I received $11.20 worth of fragrance (but again, this is highly variable based on what scent or product you choose).
