meowbox January 2020 Review

meowbox has a lot of exclusive toys that are usually pretty popular with my cats. From my perspective, it’s nice to see some things that don’t turn up in other cat subscription boxes:

The information card typically just gives a URL for finding out more information about the items in the box. The picture is adorable, as usual. This month had an arctic theme.

Wool Mouse - Estimated Value $5

Although the item I received wasn't exactly the same as this item, it was similar enough that I estimated them to have the same value. This is handmade from wool and does not contain catnip. And yet, all of the cats thought this was a very interesting item that required a lot of sniffing and head-rubbing. Like, a lot. I've left this in a place where Angus can find it because he usually likes these types of toys the best.

Crinkle Birthday Hat

NOTE: This item will not be in all boxes. If you provide a birthdate for your cat when you sign up, you will get an extra toy in that month. We do not know when any of my cats were born so we just picked a random month, which happens to be January. This is different from last year's toy. It is a birthday hat with crinkle paper inside and both Sneaky and Madison thought it was interesting. You can't put it on your cat's head, though -- it's just a toy.

Sassy Sardines

There were two of these and they are identical. Madison liked the feathers, as did Angus, and Madison actually liked the heads quite a bit as well, which I was not expecting. These are a good size for tossing around and they have lots of different textures, which is something that my cats tend to like in toys.

The Empurrium Handmade Catnip Wand

As you might have expected if you have read my other cat subscription box reviews, Sneaky and Angus totally went for this. There are two felt circles with constellations on them and they are tied to separate strings. They are a good material for sinking kitty claws and teeth into, apparently.

Narwhal Plush

This one also has a lot of textures (horn, body, feathers). And it makes squeaking noises when it gets moved very much. The tail on this was the most interesting based on my cats' reactions. It is a little larger and heavier than the sardines but still a good size for wrestling.

My Mighty Lion Totally Tuna (2.65 oz) - Retail Value $5

We are always happy to see these. These are semi-moist treats and they are well-liked by Sneaky, Monkey, and Madison. (Angus can't eat them because of his IBD.) These are made in Canada although I think they are available in the US as well, just with slightly different branding.

Gratuitous cat photos:

FYI,  Angus's ears look irritated because he is on transdermal mirtazapine (you put it in the ears). There's not much we can do about that because he needs to eat and this seems to be the only way to get him to. Monkey wasn't in the mood to play but he is an old man (with Mr. Kitty gone, Monkey is now the oldest  cat) and sometimes that happens.

Verdict: I couldn't calculate a total value for January’s meowbox because most of the items weren't yet for sale in their shop. They will likely show up later, however, sometimes it takes them a few weeks. This was a good box for my kitties. I mean, there were feathers and a wand and good treats and the toys were all small with lots of different textures to explore. What's not to like?

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? It may be too late for the January box, so your subscription would likely start with February, but you can buy some of the individual items from the meowbox store; just wait a week or two for the items to show up as they're not listed yet.

Value Breakdown: At $22.95 for the subscription plus free shipping, you are paying approximately $3.83 per item.
