Gaiam Mystery Box January 2020 Review

20 oz Sure-Grip Water Bottle in Denim - Retail Value $14.98

Water bottles aren’t very exciting, but I still really liked this one! I know glass water bottles are much more sustainable, but I am always nervous to use them in case I drop one and it breaks. This is coated in silicone that provides some protection from drops while making it easier to hold, and the mouth of the bottle is wide enough for regular freezer ice cubes. I’ve been struggling to get enough water as I adapt to my new routine and work life, so I’ve been making the concerted effort to keep this in my purse when I leave for the day. So far, so good!

Yoga Block and Strap - Retail Value $14.98

I have had my own yoga mat for a while, but blocks and straps are items I always would borrow once I got to the studio. I actually received a similar item in the Fall 2019 mystery box (it was two blocks and a strap instead of one block), and I haven’t decided yet if I want to keep this for home practice (the other set is in my yoga bag) or pass it along to a yoga-loving friend that doesn’t have her own. The block measures in at 4”D x 6”H x 9”W and is slightly thicker than the blocks I would borrow (not enough to make a noticeable difference to me), and the strap comes in at 8 feet long. Both blocks and straps can be used to safely deepen your stretch, especially in positions where your hands can’t reach the floor but you need to support yourself in your pose.

18” Muscle Therapy Foam Roller in Grey - Retail Value $24.98

During the summer while I was studying for the bar exam, I was meeting with a personal trainer about once a week to make sure my stress-relieving workouts were being done safely in proper form. She introduced me to foam rolling, and while I wasn’t a fan at first, once I experienced the benefits I was all on board. Along with helping to stretch muscles and reduce tightness, foam rolling also helps you to increase your flexibility. These are all benefits I experienced personally when I consistently foam rolled after working out, and I’m excited to now have my own.

Restore 3-in-1 Resistance Cord Kit - Retail Value $19.98

I love the ideas of these resistance bands, but I just need someone to show me (in person) how to properly use them. They come in various resistances and clip and unclip easily, and Gaiam even includes some examples on the packaging as well as a link to see more on how to use them. Because of who I am as a person, however, I will be hanging on to these until my next fitness assessment when I can have someone physically show me how to incorporate these into my exercise routine.

Premium Citron SundialYoga Mat in Indigo, 5mm - Retail Value $29.98

If Gaiam keeps releasing mystery boxes and I keep reviewing them I imagine eventually I will have too many yoga mats, but I am nowhere near that point- I was definitely still excited to see this in the box. This is on the thicker, more plush end of yoga mats that make it slightly less portable but way more comfortable on your hands and knees. I’ve actually practiced with an added pad on top of thinner yoga mats to add cushion to my knees, and with this mat, I felt like I had about the same cushion.

I find the blue mandala design to be quite pretty, and this was a great yoga mat for me to set up on the balcony at my second-floor apartment for some outdoor zen.

The Verdict: This is my second time reviewing a mystery box from Gaiam, and I love it just as much as the first. I am not a beginner to yoga, but I think this box would be a great way for a beginner to get their own supplies or someone more experienced to build up their arsenal of yoga accessories. I have been using Gaiam-brand yoga mats for years so I can personally attest to the quality of them over time, and I really appreciate that all of the fitness items do come with links to see videos, tutorials, or exercise routines using the items. Value-wise, I calculated a total value of $104.90 for everything in this box which exceeds the promised value of $100, but this will be a mystery box that has a broad range of personal values just depending on what you need in your yoga-loving life.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you order today? No, this box has sold out, but stay tuned for the next mystery box!

Value Breakdown: This box cost $61.60 ($49.95 + $11.65 shipping), which means you are paying approximately the following per item:

  • Block and Strap Combo: $8.80
  • Water Bottle: $8.80
  • Resistance Cords: $11.73
  • Foam Roller: $14.67
  • Yoga Mat: $17.61

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.
