tarte is a cruelty-free makeup company (that has also been slowly branching out into skincare!), and they recently released a new mystery box for sale.

FYI - this Tarte Mystery Mixup Discovery Set is still available for purchase!

My Subscription Addiction paid for this box. (Check out the review process post to learn more about how we review boxes.)

tarte Mystery Mixup Discovery Set December 2019 Review

tarte included a card listing all the items along with their ingredients. They also included a 15% off promo code to use on their website.

tarte included a makeup bag in this kit, and I will be honest that I don't love this. I think it is a bit small, and it reminds me more of an Ipsy bag than a nice makeup bag (this isn't a dig at Ipsy; the subscription is $10 a month!).

Clay Play Cheek & Eye Palette Vol. II  - Retail Value $45

I don't usually reach for all-in-one palettes on a day-to-day basis, but wow did this come in handy on a recent trip I took to visit my mom! I really like the clay eyeshadows from tarte for both their pigment and how comfortable they are to wear, and this palette contained a good assortment of colors to do different neutral looks. The bronzer, blush, and highlighter were all great complements for a neutral look, and the slight golden shimmer in the blush reminds me of a softer version of the cult-fave NARS Orgasm blush!

tarteist Lash Paint Mascara, 0.23 oz - Retail Value $23

tarte mascaras aren't my favorite, but out of all of the options I do like this lash paint the most. It has a stiff brush that works well for combing through my individual lashes to add length and a boost of volume, and it does leave them jet black- just the way I like it.

Color Splash Lipstick in Colada, 0.12 oz - Retail Value $21

In the tube I wasn't sure how this peach brown nude shade would look on me, but once I swatched it and wore it I quite liked it! It has enough peachy undertones to not look muddy on my complexion, and it has a really comfortable formula that wasn't drying.

Maneater Liquid Liner, 0.017 oz - Retail Value $12

I prefer brush-tipped eyeliners for getting close to my lashline in a thin line, and this liner delivered. It didn't smudge or fade while I wore it, and I was able to have good control over the tip while I was applying my makeup. I wouldn't be mad if the full-size version of this showed up in a future subscription box!

Rainforest of the Sea Drink of H20 Hydrating Boost, 0.5 oz - Retail Value $14

This moisturizer has some of my favorite skincare ingredients for hydration- squalane and hyaluronic acid! This has a gel texture that felt cooling to my skin when I applied it, and while it left my skin moisturized it wasn't greasy- AKA perfect to use before applying makeup.

Here are the swatches! At the very top is the lipstick and eyeliner, followed by the palette swatches.

Here I am wearing everything in the kit!

The Verdict: I am a big tarte fan, so I jumped all over this mystery box. None of the products felt like misses to me, and I love how wearable the colors are. tarte did come up a bit short on the promised value, though- they promised a value of $130, and I calculated a total of $115 for everything except the makeup bag. I don't think that makeup bag adds a $15 value, but I will say that the blow is softened because this was released during Cyber Week so there were coupon codes available to take some dollars off the overall cost.

To Wrap Up:

Can you get this box if you order today? As of publication, this set is still available!

Value Breakdown: This box costs $54, and I calculated a total value of $115 not including the value of the bag. Here’s what you are paying approximately per item:

  • Palette: $21.13
  • Mascara: $10.80
  • Lipstick: $9.86
  • Eyeliner: $5.63
  • Moisturizer: $6.57

Alternatively, with 6 items in this box (including the bag), you are paying $9 for each item.

Did anyone else notice that some of the shades in their palette are different than the one pictured on Tarte website? I.e. my onyx is matte but on Tarte onyx looks shimmery. It’s like they changed directions with the palette but had to get rid of original stock.

I got the exact same items and colors! I gave it to my oldest in her stocking. I had also purchased it with coupons, so I think it was around $40 at the time.

I think the bag is cute! (Ipsy is $12! ☺️)

Not sure this is a good value. Tarte has a LOT of sales, and you can pick your own colors then.
