Culture Carton “The O'Neill” November 2019 Review

My husband, John, is helping me with this review by testing all of the products and giving me his perspective.

An info card with an introduction to the month’s theme and contents is included. This month’s theme is “O'Neill.” The items promise to “upgrade a few daily essentials.”

Ekho Headphones – Retail Value $139

John was thrilled to find this item in this month’s box. He has been wanting a nice pair of headphones, and this stylish, retro set is perfect. They are comfortable and soft on the ears while delivering great sound quality. Plus, they're easy to pair with his laptop. If there is anything critical to say, it is only that I can hear his music when it is turned up loudly, meaning the headphones aren’t totally soundproof. I guess, just be careful what you play when you’re out in public.

Gentleman of the North Beanie – Listed Value $30

Just in time for winter, this soft cotton beanie is warm and comforting. The light gray color looks great and goes with practically any outfit. Plus, I appreciate that John finally has a beanie without a sports team plastered on the side of it. The “GOTN” logo is much classier for a night out.

Wolf Clothing Co. Socks – Retail Value $14

I’m not kidding when I say that John has an obsession with socks. I have to agree with him that socks are often the aspect of a man’s wardrobe that, whether funky or stylish, can make any outfit pop. These socks are of the stylish/classy variety. The fabric is soft and comfortable. The color palette of navy, aqua, and gray is sure to add modern class to an outfit.

Netherland by Joseph O’Neill – Retail Value $16 (new on Amazon for $12.24)

Winner of the Pen/Faulkner Award and a New York Times Book Review Best Book of the Year, O’Neill’s Netherland has been inundated with praise since its release. In short, it is a story about a man alone in New York City discovering the real New York. The one composed of immigrants living the time-old tale of America, the tale of opportunity and hope.

Book Summary on Amazon:

“In a New York City made phantasmagorical by the events of 9/11, and left alone after his English wife and son return to London, Hans van den Broek stumbles upon the vibrant New York subculture of cricket, where he revisits his lost childhood and, thanks to a friendship with a charismatic and charming Trinidadian named Chuck Ramkissoon, begins to reconnect with his life and his adopted country. As the two men share their vastly different experiences of contemporary immigrant life in America, an unforgettable portrait emerges of an "other" New York populated by immigrants and strivers of every race and nationality.”

The Verdict: Culture Carton always does a good job of curating novels and items for a theme. This month, John's box included some high-quality items to replace some of his lackluster basics. Each item is high-quality, stylish, and practical. The novel selection this month is a great modern classic for anyone's bookshelf. This box makes a great gift for any guy who is interested in building his library of classic novels and staple lifestyle items in a fashionable and clever way.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? No, you'll receive the February box.

Orders placed before the 15th of the month will be shipped on 15th-17th of the month. All orders placed after the 15th will ship the following month.

ACTIVE DEAL: Free shipping on all orders over $100

Value Breakdown: The box costs $45.00 + $8.18 shipping to NC and it has a retail value of $199. That means you're approximately paying the following for each item:

  • Headphones - $37.15
  • Beanie - $8.02
  • Socks - $3.74
  • Netherland - $4.28

I did not know you could just buy the lifestyle items. I have been looking at this box for a long time, but I have read 90% of what they choose, including this book. But the lifestyle items look to be high quality and many times would be great for a woman too, but not always.
