BoxyCharm January 2020 Tutorial + Review

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Contents Of Box

The Products:

The first BoxyCharm box of 2020 was named perfectly! “Breaking The Ice” is a good theme for bringing in the new year. Let's jump in and see what products we received.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Sleep Mask Product

Our very first product is from the brand Avant Skincare and it's their 8 Hour Radiance Renewal Sleeping Mask that works overnight to renew a more youthful and beautiful glow to your skin while you sleep. The science behind it is that it combines shea butter, rice bran and panthenol, and is rich in antioxidants. These quality ingredients help to tighten your skin and to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. What I like the most is that it's high in vitamins A and E which help to hydrate the skin and give off that inner glow.

I was able to give this product a try last night before I went to bed. It was pretty simple. Instead of using my normal skincare products, I just washed and dried my face and put on a thin layer of this product. I wanted to test it out alone and not mixed with my other skincare products. There was a very light but pleasant scent and a little goes a long way. The next morning, I noticed my skin still felt very hydrated and there was a very subtle glow. Of course I will be able to have a better review of the product after a couple more uses, however, for just one single night I'm pretty impressed with the results.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Holding Concealer Product

Our next product is from Pretty Vulgar Cosmetics, a company that BoxyCharm has featured quite a bit last year.  This time we received the Under Cover Concealer. I have seen tons of YouTube videos on this particular concealer, so I'm excited to try it out for myself. Yaaa to BoxyCharm for sending me the correct shade! This is a lightweight concealer with a gel-like serum that is hydrating and buildable. There are vitamins and galactoarabinan inside to help your skin stay moisturized. There is also an agent to help brighten your complexion as well. This is perfect because I have lots of dark spots to cover. Another thing this concealer is known for is its medium coverage and natural finish.,

I'm using their darkest shade called "Shade for Days." I will be using this concealer in two ways: first on the lids of my eyes as both a primer and transition shade, then I will be covering the dark circles around my eyes and any other dark spots I see.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Patting In Concealer With Silver Brush

Now that I have the concealer in place, I'm going to use my foundation brush to pat the product in. I love how the formula just sort of melted into my skin. It's the perfect shade and I loved the amount of coverage this product gave me. The medium coverage is just enough to cover all my trouble areas. However, my favorite part of this concealer is how it did not crease up on me like other products have in the past. I will definitely be using a lot more of this concealer.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Holding Up Eyeshadow Palette

Our next product is a gorgeous eyeshadow palette from Ace Beaute and I received the Vintage Dawn palette. You guys have no idea of how happy I was when I saw this eyeshadow palette in the January spoilers! BoxyCharm has sent us a palette from this brand in the past, so that's how I know Ace Beaute palettes are simply amazing! This particular palette has 12 amazing shades that are named after sunrises all around the world. It's also a sister palette to their Scarlet Dusk palette. I honestly don't think I have used a palette with such great color payoff. These shadows always come in stunning colors and whether they are mattes or shimmers, the shades are always very pigmented. I can not wait to use this palette and play around with all the colors. I want to create an easy three-shade glamour eye look. Since there are so many amazing shades it was super hard to choose three. I'm going to be using the following three shades, Cactus, Sky and Serengeti, for that pop of color. However, you can choose any three shades to complete this look. Let's jump right in!

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Pointing To Middle Of My Eye With Brush

First using a medium fluffy brush with a slight angle, I placed the shade Cactus on the halfway mark between my inner eye and then stopping past the middle of my eye. I placed a brush pointer so you can see exactly where I stopped with this shade. This is a dark pea green shade that I think will marry well with the beautiful dark blue shade we are going to use next.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Wearing Both Green And Blue Shades Together

Next, I cleaned off and used the same brush and took the shade Sky and added it to the end of my green shade, going outward to the outer V area of my eyes. Here is how the two shades should look together when you're done. It should look like you started with green and ended with blue. If you noticed, I'm keeping my lid area free of color.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Wearing The Gold Shade On Both Lids

Then using our last shade Serengeti I placed it right across my lids. This is a stunning gold shimmer shade that had a small amount of fallout as you can see in the picture.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Adding Black Eyeliner with Pencil

Next I took a black eyeliner and carefully lined both the top lid and below the bottom lashes as well. Then I did my best to connect the two lines toward the outer corner. You can use a pencil like me or a liquid eyeliner if that works better for you.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Using Gold Brush Under Eye

After my eyeliner I took a very tiny flat brush and placed the color Sky on my lower lash line, just to smoke it out a bit.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Two Fingers Under My Chin

Here is the three-shade eyeshadow look completed. I have used tons of eyeshadow palettes and I truly believe that Ace Beaute has some of the best pigmented eyeshadows that I have ever used. They go on beautifully and blend out effortlessly.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Using Pencil Down My Nose

After cleaning up the fallout with some makeup remover, I filled in my brows and added some primer and foundation. Then I started to contour my face. I usually contour when I'm going for a more glamour look versus a simple everyday makeup look. I used a brown pencil to add my contour. I added this on both sides of my nose to narrow my nose a bit, and then on both cheekbones and around my forehead area.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Blending Out Contour With Silver Brush

I then took a brush and blended it all out before moving on to our next product.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Holding Up Blush And Bronzer Duo

Our next product is from Wander Beauty, another brand BoxyCharm frequently features. This time we received the Trip for Two Blush + Bronzer Duo and out of the two options, I received the Daiquiri/Tulum shade. This is a blush and bronzer duo that is supposed to give a natural sun-kissed look while adding a hint of color as well. I love bronzer, however I'm not too fond of blush so I'll be using a very light hand when I apply it.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Wearing Blush

It didn't turn out too bad, I like how easy it was to work with and the subtle glow it gave me. After adding the blush and bronzer duo, I added some setting powder and a very natural pair of eyelashes.

Boxycharm Tutorial January 2020 - Holding Up Lip Product

Our final makeup product is from the brand Manna Kadar Beauty and it's their Lip Whip lipstick. I received the shade Net which is a very pale pink nude. These Lip Whips are matte lipsticks in a whipped formula. Not only are they very pigmented, they are hydrating as well. I decided to create an ombre lip because I knew this shade would not flatter me very well if worn alone. An ombre lip usually consists of either two or more shades worn together. The first shade goes around the edges of the mouth, and the other is put in the inner parts of the lip. For my first shade, I used a lip liner from M.A.C cosmetics in the shade Current and then I placed the Lip Whip in the center or inner part of my lips using the applicator.  The Lip Whip formula was very creamy and easy to apply. It dried down to a matte finish and I'm very pleased with how it came out.

Here is the final makeup look I created, I hope you guys were able to follow along and enjoyed the process as much as I did.

Verdict: I think that BoxyCharm did an excellent job of creating our very first box of the year. We received a different array of wonderful items and my favorite is hands down the eyeshadow palette. It was super hard to pick three shades, so I can hardly wait to try out the other nine gorgeous shades. What was your favorite item this month? I really hope you guys enjoyed the January BoxyCharm as much as I did.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you sign up today? You'll likely receive the February box as your first.

I am addicted to subscription boxes for so many reasons. For one I simply love the element of surprise that each month brings, whether its beauty, skin care or anything else. I love the opportunity of trying out new products every month without having to commit to the full purchase. My favorite boxes are Boxycharm, Popsugar, and any Mommy and baby boxes. I am a brand new mother and I love trying out new things for my baby and I love how they always have something special for mommy!

Desiree, you know I’ve been looking forward to this months review 🙂
As someone else said, you really came up with a glamorous look! The in-depth directions are so helpful. I’m glad to see someone else use concealer as an eyeshadow primer, I thought that was just me. I have never tried to contour with a pencil before, but that looks like something fun to try. Any suggestions on color matching for the contour? I almost feel like it would just look like I drew all over my face. I love gold eyeshadow!! But when I do gold it turns out too flashy. I need to try your colors and technique, you made it look so pretty!
And, I can’t thank you enough for the advice about using a brush for foundation!! It goes on so much smoother and looks so much nicer. I can’t believe I ever thought using my fingers was acceptable lol

You are so funny! There are some days when I’m so busy with my two year old active son that by nature I use my fingers so I totally get it. As far as what color you should use to contour , you should try and go at least two shades darker than your skin tone. Also your skin undertone matters as well. I don’t want to confuse you so give this a try: make some time in your day to try different shades on your face and take pictures so you can see yourself in different lights. I’m a very visual learner so I spent lots of time in the mirror just practicing and trying out different colors and tones. That’s how I learned what looked good and what did not. Trust me it’s a learning process, I still see pictures of myself and I wonder what was I thinking when I put on my makeup that day. Lol it’s fun though, just have fun with it and laugh at yourself it’s how we learn. Thank you so much for writing a comment, I just hope I didn’t respond too late and you come back and see this message. You have no idea how you guys comments make my day!!!

Thanks for the tutorial. I was really bummed I got the pallett and the wander blush and bronzer. I really wanted more skin care. I was going to give them away until I saw your tutorial. It made me want to give them a try and see if I can create a glamour look like you did. Thanks for the tip with the brown pencil to contour. I always use a darker concealer and it’s too much foundation. I like this idea. You look fabulous and always do such a great job with your tutorials. Thanks.

Hi Desiree, great tutorial, thank you. It was really helpful when you pointed out the area at which you stopped with the cactus colour. I need specific directions like that! You look fantastic.

I got the Mana Karda and I had a reaction. Different shade.
This is the second time this happened. Different type and brand of product. I contacted Boxycharm. “Boxycharm cannot custom boxes for allergic reactions.” I didn’t ask for custom. Just telling them. I have a allergy to something gross. So that’s why I cancelled. I got grossed out.

Wow! You look stunning! Truly a natural beauty sans makeup, and total glamour with it! Can you tell me if you used a primer, and what brand? Also, what brand of foundation? Thanks!

Thanks! for this look I used a Smashbox Primer sample I had on hand, however Im a big fan of drugstore brands so the primer Im using daily is the N07 Airbrush Away Primer and the foundation is the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation and Im in the shade 7W1 Deep Spice.

Dezi

Thank you, Im a primer junkie so I use all kinds of different ones, for this look I used the Smashbox Photo Finish just a few dabs. However, I love to use drugstore products as well and right now my favorite drugstore primer is the N0 7 Airbrush Away Primer and I love it! Also right now I’m using the Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. I love how it gives a more natural look to the skin.
