Beauty Brands ‘Skincare Secrets’ Box January 2020 Review

An information sheet was included, along with a coupon for a Murad add-on treatment to any facial service.

bareMinerals Skinlongevity Vital Power Infusion Serum, 0.25 oz – Estimated Value $9.50 (Buy the 1 oz version for $38)

I didn’t know the bareMinerals line extended beyond makeup! This serum has botanical extracts to provide antioxidants, and it also has minerals designed to help skin look radiant. In terms of texture, this was a thin serum that spread out well on my skin, and it didn’t leave a tacky finish.

Conair Scunci 5 Piece Headband Set – Buy a similar set for $6.29

I like using headbands like these to hold my hair out of my face when I’m applying skincare or doing my makeup. They’re a bit basic, and will definitely slip after a while if not pinned in place, but they’re comfortable to wear and don’t squeeze my head.

Dermalogica Prisma Protect SPF30 Moisturizer, 0.24 oz – Estimated Value $11.40 (Buy the 0.40 oz version for $19)

I am a big Dermalogica fan, and I wish we saw more of them in subscription boxes. This is the perfect hybrid of sunscreen and moisturizer- I used on top of a lightweight moisturizer and loved how it nourishing it was to my skin. It didn’t feel like sunscreen to me, but I trust that I’m actually getting that SPF protection because I trust the brand.

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Hydrating Serum, 0.06 oz – Estimated Value $1.34 (Buy the 1.7 oz version for $38)

I don’t love seeing foil samples, but boy do they come in handy when I’m traveling! Even if I’m not going on any trips, I like to keep foil samples in my purse as a backup plan for the unknown. I like First Aid Beauty a lot, and this serum has great ingredients like colloidal oatmeal (great for sensitive skin), hyaluronic acid, aloe, peptides, and collagen.

Laura Gellar Spackle Mattifying Oil Control Under Makeup Primer, 0.5 oz – Estimated Value $8 (Buy the 2 oz version for $32)

I don’t usually reach for oil control primers, but I thought this primer did a solid job. I love that this has Centella and white tea in the ingredients,  which add a skincare boost of antioxidants to a product designed to be worn under makeup.

Murad Retinol Youth Renewal Serum, 0.17 oz – Estimated Value $15.13 (Buy the 1 oz version for $89)

Murad isn’t my holy grail brand, but I definitely respect the product line. In terms of sales, this was the number one retinol product in 2017! This serum has a retinol booster, a fast-acting retinoid, and time-released retinol to fight lines, wrinkles, and other signs of aging. Retinols can be drying, so I really like that this formula also has hydrating squalane, hyaluronic acid, and shea butter in the formula.

StriVectin Wrinkle ReCode Line Transforming Melting Serum, 0.24 oz – Estimated Value $21.36 (Buy the 1 oz version for $89)

This is a non-retinol serum, so while it promises to “melt” fine lines it isn’t going to be as potent as an actual retinol. I don’t really have lines that need transforming, but this layered well in my skincare routine and added a boost of hydration.

Verdict: This box was serum-heavy, but I don’t consider that a bad thing when serums are usually the most expensive item in a product line. I like the Beauty Brands Discovery Boxes because they usually deliver a good value at an affordable price tag, and I think that holds true here, too. I calculated a total value of $73.02 for everything in this box.

To Wrap Up:

Can you still get this box if you order today? No, this discovery box has sold out.

Value Breakdown: This box cost $20.95 ($15 + $5.95 shipping) and I calculated a value of $73.02. That means you are paying approximately the following for each item:

  • bareMinerals: $2.73
  • Scunci: $1.81
  • Dermalogica: $3.28
  • First Aid Beauty: $0.38
  • Laura Geller: $2.30
  • Murad: $4.35
  • StiVectin:  $6.14

I am a staunch believer that pineapple doesn’t belong on pizza and when I’m not working as a family law attorney I enjoy hiking the Louisiana trails (alligator sightings are a favorite!) or relaxing with Duchess, my cat. I’m a sucker for anything labeled a mystery box and I’ve never met a bath bomb I didn’t like.

  1. Glad I passed on this one. Some good stuff but most is small and already lots I have tried.

  2. $15 for small samples that you can most likely get for free at the department store.
