Skylar November 2019 perfume subscriptionbox review

Skylar Scent Club

Skylar Scent Club is a monthly perfume subscription that includes one limited-edition clean, hypoallergenic, and cruelty-free scent.

The founder, Cat, became especially conscious of product ingredients while working for The Honest Company and quickly realized she couldn't find a truly clean perfume she enjoyed. She also realized tons of other perfume lovers were looking for the same thing, so Skylar was born!

December 2019 Skylar Scent of the Month: Silver Noir

roller ball next to book

This is my fifth month of this subscription and I am still SO impressed with the gorgeous packaging. Each rollerball scent "book" lives in a beautiful row on my desk, and I only wish I had signed up earlier so I would have scents 1-3 to complete the collection. Inside the book is a note on the fragrance itself as well as layering recommendations with other Skylar scents.

Each month Skylar selects a charity to donate a portion of their Scent Club proceeds. This month it is Meals on Wheels:

Meals on Wheels America is the leadership organization supporting the more than 5,000 community-based programs across the country that are dedicated to addressing senior isolation and hunger. This network serves virtually every community in America and, along with more than two million staff and volunteers, delivers the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks that enable America’s seniors to live nourished lives with independence and dignity. By providing funding, leadership, education, research and advocacy support, Meals on Wheels America empowers its local member programs to strengthen their communities, one senior at a time.

It's worth noting that Skylar scents are hypoallergenic, phthalate-free, paraben-free, and cruelty-free. They are also made in the US (in Los Angeles, to be exact!) and have no synthetic dyes. Scent Notes: Sparkling Champagne, Orris, Cashmere Woods

"Snow falling outside. The cracking fire brings warmth. Nights are filled with cheer."

FYI: I noticed on the Skylar website, the cashmere woods note was replaced by raspberry, so I decided to reach out to customer service just to make sure! I was assured that both notes were in this month's scent, but they had chosen to highlight the raspberry scent note as it was a stronger fragrance influence.

I knew I would probably like this scent based on the notes alone. Orris is pretty much my kryptonite and champagne and wood too? Sign me up. Upon first sniff, this definitely feels like a more approachable or mainstream scent than what I have come to expect from this subscription. That isn't a bad thing! Not every rollie can be delightfully odd, even if that is what I prefer. I feel like the raspberry note is the loudest, second only to a sweet woodsy scent, both well served by bubbly champagne and powdery orris somewhere on the left and right of that creamier cashmere note.

On its own, this is a scent that anyone could wear and appreciate, though I, admittedly, typically shy away from sweet berry scents. The beauty of Skylar is that everything is delightfully layer-able and I decided to try this with my all-time Skylar fave, Wanderlust. If you have both of these, prepare to be wowed by this combo. Together they seem to enhance each other, and the cedar of Wanderlust is a perfect match for the cashmere woods of Silver Noir. The softer notes also blend together beautifully, into a sweet and powdery symphony that is truly reflective of the more luxurious but soft side of the holiday season, like hygge in sequins, or the feeling of kicking off your heels and flopping down onto the sofa in your sparkly party dress, half-full champagne bottle still in hand.

metal rollerball tip

Skylar perfumes usually feel lighter than so many others due to the natural and clean ingredients used to make them. This one has a ton of staying power and great sillage on my skin. It lasted all day! This could be totally different for you, as skin chemistry plays a huge role in these factors.

Verdict: Skylar sure was festive this month. They sent me a rollie with a scent I probably wouldn't have ever reached for on my own, but that I am obsessed with when mixed with other Skylar favorites. I think that is the beauty of this subscription and more specifically, Skylar: healthy, feel-good, clean fragrances you can totally customize to be exactly what you want. Who wouldn't want their own bespoke perfume? This club makes it easy, fun, and exploratory, and as you build up your collection of rollies, the combinations are truly endless. I am psyched to see what next month brings!

I love natural/vegan beauty products, Korean skincare, unique jewelry, and weird candies from far away places. When I am not waiting for my next exciting box you can find me painting or taking photographs of interesting people. I never leave home without pug hair somewhere on my shirt and a bold lipstick on my smile.

Starting in January, they have changed their packaging. The boxes are now just simple cardboard boxes. I was bummed about this change, as I loved and have saved all of my boxes so far (including scents I bought extras of) for storing sewing notions, jewelry for travel, etc. Plus, something is lacking in the presentation now. It just feels a little less special.

I understand the reason for doing it (trying to be greener and less wasteful with packaging) but I’m still bummed. The new boxes aren’t anything worth saving, so for me it’s actually creating more waste, since I saved the old ones and will be throwing the new boxes away.

My hubby gave me a gift subscription and a a rollerball of Fall Cashmere. I gave him the hint after reading Megan’s awesome review. Silver Noir is a scent I think I’ll enjoy, but Fall Cashmere is exceptional. I can’t wait to order Wanderlust! Thanks for brining my attention to this awesome company. Happy holidays!

Yup, I also knew this scent wouldn’t be for me, so I asked customer service to substitute another rollie of Wanderlust (also my favorite scent of theirs, Megan!) and it was super easy. Love this subscription.

Wanderlust was SOOOO good. I keep waiting for them to just make it part of their core collection. Then I can buy all the bottles I want!

When I saw the sweet scented notes I knew this one wouldn’t be for me, I switched my shipment to Willow for this month, nice to have that option, too.
