Premium Gentleman’s Box “The Speakeasy Edition” Winter 2019 Review

Included in our box was this booklet full of nice color photos that provides information on all of the brands and the products we received. Our theme for this quarter is “Speakeasy” and this curation is designed to help us entertain over the holidays.  I love that they even included a cocktail recipe that can be made alcoholic or non-alcoholic!

Crystal Decanter Set by Vintage Gentleman – Estimated Value $100.00

Our first item arrived packaged separately in its own box. There is a layer of shiny black satin-like fabric inside to cushion this classy decanter set making it ideal for gifting if cocktails aren’t your thing! While I wasn’t able to find this exact set on the Vintage Gentleman website, the least expensive set is currently on sale for about $100 so I used that as a basis for my estimate. I’d actually go as far as to say the set we received is a bit nicer with the vintage details and cut of the glass.

This heavy decanter holds 800 ml and measures 9.5″ x 3.5″ wide. I actually really dig the vintage cut crystal style of this and the large square lid. While this is definitely not a necessity, it will certainly look nicer in our liquor cabinet than the bottles our bourbon comes in! You can see we need to replenish our stash here and this nice size decanter should hold a full bottle for us.

These 10-ounce double Old-Fashioned glasses have a nice hefty weight to them and are really pretty. I think it’s nice to have a matching set of four glasses to go with our decanter for entertaining when they could have easily just sent two glasses, which is typical of subscription boxes. Again, I know this is definitely not a style that will appeal to everyone, but I think this is a pretty classic look and I will enjoy having a drink in these and feel both grown-up and classy!

Cocktail Shaker Set by Project Happy Days

Of course, you can’t entertain without a proper cocktail shaker and all of the bartending tools you may need! This set is a basic stainless set that you can probably find anywhere, which was a bit disappointing to us because we already have a similar set and definitely don’t need two. I wish this was a little more unique so we could swap ours out, but it does have some really useful items in it. Even a few that we can add to our bar collection.

The cocktail shaker and double-sided jigger are both almost identical to what we already own. The shaker holds 24 oz. and has a built-in strainer.

A muddler and a bar mixing spoon are also both items we own and use frequently.

The liquor pourer and Hawthorne strainer are both items I miss from my bartending days since they making pouring and straining cocktails easy and I do not own a nice set of tongs like these, so I am considering swiping these before I pass the set along to my mom! Overall, it was a nice set of items that will be useful in making all sorts of drinks and possibly have you sliding glasses across the table Tom Cruise style, although I don’t recommend trying this with the glasses we received!

Whiskey Sphere Ice Tray by Sous-Shop – Retail Value $12.14 ($16.99 CAD)

This ice cube tray makes four large spheres of ice which are ideal for putting in cocktails or liquor since they melt slower and don’t dilute your drinks quite as much. My husband actually has a set that I bought for him one year, but they are not as convenient or simple to use as these. I like that this tray, made from food-grade silicone, holds four balls of ice which measure just under 2 inches in diameter. These are great for entertaining and a unique item to include in this box!

We decided to test out our new goodies with an Old Fashioned. The ice spheres worked great!

Leather Coasters by Sanctuary Homeware

The last item we received was this set of four leather coasters. These are a nice item that my husband and I were both happy with! These coasters are great quality and very minimalist which suits my husband’s style well. I thought this was a nice addition to the box and fit perfectly within the theme.

They are about 4″ and the perfect size for our new glasses.

Verdict: This “Speakeasy” Winter edition of the Premium Gentleman’s Box was unique and had a fun theme. They certainly took a risk here in sending barware since this may not appeal to everyone, or if you are like us, you already have a lot of items you need for your bar, but the quality of the decanter set really impressed me. I love the hefty weight of it and the beautiful vintage look of the glass. If it wasn’t quite your speed, it is easily giftable in the nice box it came in. While I was a bit indifferent to the cocktail set, it did have some useful items in it and I thought the leather coasters and the ice molds were great items to really round out this box. Overall, I’d say the theme was nicely done. This box costs $100 and we received four items which gives each item an average value of $25. Since there were no listed values and I was only able to confirm the retail value of the ice molds I can’t really assign a total retail value, but given that the least expensive decanter set from Vintage Gentleman is on sale for $100, I think we probably received a decent value this month!
